Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feast of Corpus Christi, celebrated annually on Thursday after Trinity Sunday, was devoted to the Eucharist, and the normal practice was to have solemn processions through the city with the Host, the consecrated wafer that was believed to have been transformed into the true body and blood of Jesus. In this way the "cultus Dei" thus celebrated allowed the people to venerate the Eucharistic bread in order that they might be stimulated to devotion and brought symbolically, even mystically into a relationship with the central moments of salvation history. Perhaps it is logical, therefore, that pageants and plays were introduced in order to access yet another way of visualizing and participating in those events. Thus the "invisible things" of the divine order "from the creation of the world" might be displayed. The York Corpus Christi Plays, contained in London, British Library, MS. Add. 35290 and comprising more than thirteen thousand lines of verse, actually represent a unique survival of medieval theater. They form the only complete play cycle verifiably associated with the feast of Corpus Christi that is extant and was performed at a specific location in England.

Book excerpt: A lively account of the modern staging of the medieval mystery plays, richly illustrated with stills and other photographs. The turn of the last millennium saw a sudden flourishing in the revival of the medieval mystery plays, with a number of different productions being staged across the country and further afield. But why were they staged? What features of the plays attracted the modern-day director? What can the mystery plays offer today's producers, directors, participants and audiences? This book seeks to answer these questions. Beginning with an exploration of the original staging conditions, the study goes on to examine the reasons why the plays are produced today, and through a series of case studies looks at how notions of community, identity and space are articulated within contemporary stagings: it considers productions at Chester, Chichester, Leeds, Lichfield, Lincoln, Toronto, Worsbrough, and York, as well as productions by the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. Importantly, the author uses evidence gleaned from interviews with directors and producers, and observation of rehearsals, and performances, to bring a fresh and modern perspective to bear. Richly illustrated. KATIENORMINGTON is Professor of Drama at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before theater was standard entertainment, before it was even legal in some countries, there were liturgical plays performed both inside and outside churches to dramatize the stories of the New Testament. These plays developed from lavish church ceremonies and became yearly events, being performed at the appropriate time during the ecclesiastical year. In Ancient Mysteries Described, William Hone reprints and annotates plays that were developed as additions to the liturgical plays, telling stories beyond the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ. Some of these plays include the early life of Mary and God's conversation with himself over incarnating as Jesus. English satirist and free-speech pioneer WILLIAM HONE (1780-1842) was brought up on charges for his political satires exposing the excesses of royalty and clergy, but was acquitted on all counts. He is remembered for The Political House That Jack Built (1819) and Apocryphal New Testament (1820).

Download or read book York Mystery Plays written by Richard Beadle and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers 22 of the central pageants which make up York's famous Corpus Christi cycle. The York cycle is the oldest and best-known of the English mystery cycles, and its depth and scope are reflected in the selection printed here. The shape of the cycle was governed by subjectmatter of enduring spiritual significance, both to its contemporary audience and in later literary and artistic tradition, and the selection reflects these concerns. Included are plays on the Creation, the Fall of Man, the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ, and the Last Judgement. The Passion sequence has been expanded by six of the eight plays generally attributed to the great poetic dramatist known as the York Realist: the authentic text of these plays is not otherwise available in paperback. As well as providing detailed annotation, this edition offers an introductionwhich examines the history of the cycle and discusses the immensely popular modern productions in York and elsewhere.
