Book The Myth of Pain

Download or read book The Myth of Pain written by Valerie Gray Hardcastle and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valerie Gray Hardcastle argues that both professional and lay definitions of pain are wrongheaded -- with consequences for how pain and pain patients are treated, how psychological disorders are understood, and how clinicians define the mind/body relationship. Pain, although very common, is little understood. Worse still, according to Valerie Gray Hardcastle, both professional and lay definitions of pain are wrongheaded -- with consequences for how pain and pain patients are treated, how psychological disorders are understood, and how clinicians define the mind/body relationship. Hardcastle offers a biologically based complex theory of pain processing, inhibition, and sensation and then uses this theory to make several arguments: (1) psychogenic pains do not exist; (2) a general lack of knowledge about fundamental brain function prevents us from distinguishing between mental and physical causes, although the distinction remains useful; (3) most pain talk should be eliminated from both the folk and academic communities; and (4) such a biological approach is useful generally for explaining disorders in pain processing. She shows how her analysis of pain can serve as a model for the analysis of other psychological disorders and suggests that her project be taken as a model for the philosophical analysis of disorders in psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience.

Book Management of Patients with Chronic Pain

Download or read book Management of Patients with Chronic Pain written by Steven F. Brena and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written for the general health care professional, from every medical and paramedical specialization. Because pain is the most common factor driving patients to seek professional advice, it is likely that every physician, psychologist, and therapist has been clinically exposed to the difficulty and the frequent frustration of dealing with people in pain. All of them may find in this book some explanations for their puzzles and some updated information, which usually are published in specialized journals not ordinarily read by the general practitioner. Actually the book has been addressed to professionals at two different levels of general practice. At one level is the busy practitioner who treats most patients with' 'acute" pain, and who may use this information in daily practice to prevent the onset of chronic pain; a common effort from all professionals currently is needed to curb the "epidemic" of chronic pain in the United States. At another level the book has been addressed to the practitioner who may have a more intense desire to become involved in the actual management of chronic pain patients.

Book excerpt: Pain is not something that most of us would count as a blessing; however, renowned surgeon Dr. Paul Brand and award-winning writer Philip Yancey shed fresh light on the purpose of our pain. Wouldn't it be nice to never experience pain or never have to take drugs to deal with pain? Many people think so, but they're missing one key piece of information: Pain is the body's built-in warning system that something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Follow world-renowned physician and surgeon Dr. Paul Brand around the world as he shares his humble beginnings as the son of medical missionaries in India to his medical training in London during the Blitz to his groundbreaking medical research with leprosy patients in the United States and India. His work with leprosy patients is what convinced him that pain truly is one of God's great gifts to us. In these pages he shares what he's learned about pain, its purpose in our lives, the impact it has on our daily lives and overall health, and how we can better respond to it. Perfect for those in the medical field or those looking for a firsthand look into the mystery of pain, this book will give you a new perspective on the gift that none of us want and none of us can do without. Book The Culture of Pain

Download or read book The Culture of Pain written by David B. Morris and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-09-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the meanings we make out of pain. The greatest surprise I encountered in discussing this topic over the past ten years was the consistency with which I was asked a single unvarying question: Are you writing about physical pain or mental pain? The overwhelming consistency of this response convinces me that modern culture rests upon and underlying belief so strong that it grips us with the force of a founding myth. Call it the Myth of Two Pains. We live in an era when many people believe--as a basic, unexamined foundation of thought--that pain comes divided into separate types: physical and mental. These two types of pain, so the myth goes, are as different as land and sea. You feel physical pain if your arm breaks, and you feel mental pain if your heart breaks. Between these two different events we seem to imagine a gulf so wide and deep that it might as well be filled by a sea that is impossible to navigate.

Book Gods of Desterrados the Vengeance of Tunui Realm

Download or read book Gods of Desterrados the Vengeance of Tunui Realm written by Jeannie Mane and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chorus of frightening voices began to cackle maniacally and chanted in a strange language. Diana picked up the fruit but dropped it when it burned her hand to the touch. To Greta’s horror, an upside-down cross was beginning to sear into the palm of Diana’s hand. Her eyes were solid white before she crumpled to the ground. “AHHH... FRESH MEAT, SO SWEET. WE’LL MAKE THE GODDESS PURR... PURR... PURR!” sniggered the evil being in a cacophony of guttural sounds. It took all the courage inside Greta to leap onto the levitated bed. While she struggled with the entity possessing her teammate, she was amazingly able to force the blood amulet over the demon’s neck. In that instant, the bed slammed to the ground. Diana sat up looking quite dazed as well. Greta inspected them before breaking her silence. “Are you both okay?” Shade was sobbing. “What happened? Why am I tied up? Please untie me. I’m so scared.” Diana was about to release Shade, but Greta immediately grew concerned. She wisely chose to keep it to herself because Diana still had the telling mark on her hand. I need to get Priest. He’s the only person who can fix this issue religiously.
