The old ideas surrounding crustacean evolution have served scientists well for many years; it is now time to turn toward new research by embracing the results derived from investigations conducted largely within this century. For example, new definitions have arisen from sources across several fields of study, and Frederick R. Schram and Stefan Koenemann have created a book that explores paleobiodiversity and the diversity of modern body plans. Developments within ontogenetic studies continue to generate remarkable insights into crustaceomorph evolution in regard to patterns of embryology and a revolution in the application of development genetics. Phylogeny techniques of analysis and new sources of data derived from molecular sequencing and genetic studies have forced scientists to consider new hypotheses concerning the interrelationships of all the pancrustaceans, both the crustaceomorphs and Hexapoda. Book excerpt: Fifty known species and four known varieties of the genus Siriella from the Pacific Ocean, the Indian and their marginal seas are revised. A nominal species, S. gibba is ranked in a junior synonym of S. brevirostris, because it is judged to be an immature stage of female S. brevirostris. Three varieties, S. japonica var. izuensie, S. watasei var koreana and S. satasei var macropsis, are abandoned as nomen nudum, and proposed afresh as new species under the name of S. izuensis, S. koreana and S. macropsis, respectively. A variety, S. japonica var. sagamiensis is canceled, because the description of this variety must have made based on immature forms of S. izuensis. The validity of S. robusta is questionable by reason that the description must have done on immature specimens. Siriella intermedia is canceled as nomen nudum, because the specific name, intermedia, has been preoccupied by a species which is known as S. armata at present. The following 12 species, S. akajimaensis, S. amamiensis, S. brucei, S. chaitiamvongae, S. essingtonensis, S. iii, S. longiarticulis, S. mulyadii, S. rimata, S. scissilis, S. seafdeci, and S. tenulungula, are fully described herein as new species. Sixty-one nominal species of Siriella discussed in this article are classified into nine groups and five subgroups. Key to the species is given.

Interest in the ecology of mysids, particularly Mysis relieta. was growing rapidly, so a meeting of active workers was held at the ASLO conference. Although the small group of researchers attending that first meeting were primarily North American and interested in Mysis relieta. the group quickly expanded to include researchers from every continent with interests in all aspects of mysid biology (see Appendix). The group, informally called the Mysid Research Group, formed to serve two basic functions·. The first was to facilitate communication among mysid researchers by publishing a member ship list and periodic newsletters. The second was to organize an international symposium on mysid ecology. After several false starts, a symposium was successfully held in conjunction with the 1981 ASLO meetings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The symposium lasted over parts of two days with an evening workshop the second day. Altogether, 1 poster and 21 oral presentations were given by 42 researchers. This volume is an outgrowth of that symposium and includes 15 of the papers originally presented at the conference. In order to make the volume as comprehensive as possible, contributions from individuals who could not attend the symposium were solicited. Thus, a total of 22 original contributions make up the present work.
