Download or read book Institutional Investors written by E. Philip Davis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important recent developments in financial markets is the institutionalization of saving associated with the growth of pension funds, life insurance companies, and mutual funds. An increasing proportion of household saving is now managed by professional portfolio managers instead of being directly invested in the securities markets or held in the form of bank deposits. With the aging of the population and its adverse impact on public pension systems, the shift of individual savings to institutional investors is likely to become even more marked in the coming years. This book provides a comprehensive economic assessment of institutional investment. It charts the development and performance of the asset management industry and analyzes the implications of rising institutionalized saving for the development of the securities trading industry, the financial sector as a whole, and the wider economy. The book draws extensively on international experience, particularly in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan.

Download or read book Investment Growth and Employment written by Ciaran Driver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-10 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment - in both facilities and know-how - is essential for growth. Economists try to understand the forces that determine investment, but investment behaviour is unruly; often the term animal spirits is used to explain the resulting volatility. This volume presents studies to explain international investment behaviour and assess its impact on growth and jobs. The authors also examine policy measures to reverse the climate of low investment that has characterised recent decades. The contributors examine how well standard models of investment work, the role of finance constraints, the effect of risk and uncertainty, the impact of alternative forms of corporate governance, the forces shaping the adoption of new technology, the impact of foreign direct investment, the effect of investment on the NAIRU and the causal structure of investment and growth. Editors introductions to the different sections of the book provide comprehensive overviews of the main theories of investment, the impact of investment on growth and employment and examine the main questions raised for policy makers.

Download or read book R D Decisions written by Alice Belcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R&D Decisions, Strategy, Policy and Innovations explores how research and development decisions affect all of us. They are linked inextricably to the performance of firms and of economics as a whole. Their importance means that they are of concern to a large number of practitioners, policy-makers and researchers. This book demonstrates the range of issues and perspectives which R&D can encompass and at the same time brings out the elements which unite them. The papers in this book are organized into three main sections: * Strategy and Organization explores the importance of R&D and of the structures and strategies of individual organizations. The emerging 'core competence paradigm' is especially noted. * Policy and Performance looks at what new thinking on R&D more generally implies for government policy and the performance of industries, regions and economies. * Disclosure and the Market examines issues raised by changing regulations on the disclosure of R&D expenditure.
Download or read book Cultivating a Sustainable Mindset in Finance written by Danyelle Guyatt and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivating a Sustainable Mindset in Finance explores the behavioural challenges and opportunities to cultivate a sustainable mindset amongst financial professionals that could accelerate capital allocation to combat climate change. It draws on real life examples of institutional investors. While many investors recognize the growing need to incorporate climate change into investment decisions, it is not a straightforward task, and there are a multitude of challenges that investors face that slow down the speed and scale of action required to adapt investment processes. Some of these barriers have been widely debated and often cited, such as lack of consistent signals from government policy-makers, the need to upscale new technology advances, a lack of suitable investable opportunities or lack of data, models, or suitable metrics. However, there are additional challenges that relate specifically to investor behaviour itself, that are often overlooked. Through real-life case studies and survey evidence, this book explores the psychological underpinnings of investment decisions, including the dominant mindset of financial professionals, the prevalence of cognitive biases, cultural drivers, and personal relationships (both at the individual level and inside and outside organizations), and sets out a pathway to cultivate a sustainable mindset to accelerate capital allocation with the urgency that is needed to combat climate change. It is of interest to researchers and students in finance and investment; to investment firms; and to any organization looking to make sense of sustainability financing.

Download or read book Public Enterprise Revisited written by Chrisafis H. Iordanoglou and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book compares the 1954-79 labour productivity record of five expanding public sector industries to that of 24 expanding, capital intensive, mass-production industries in the British private sector. The author shows that the public sector industries' labour productivity growth was significantly faster than that of the private sector industries. Strikingly, he also finds that the state-owned industries were narrowing their productivity gap with their US counterparts at a significantly faster rate than the private sector industries. Dr. Iordanoglou concludes that it is possible that public ownership had - in the historical period investigated - a long-term positive effect on these industries."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Technological Change and Company Strategies written by Rod Coombs and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoclassical economics, in particular the orthodox theory of the firm, offers little insight into the question of company strategy. It contributes even less to the understanding of the strategic management of technological change. In this volume, a number of international scholars from a variety of related disciplines explore the possibility of a more unified approach to linking company strategy and technological change. Each author examines the contributions from his own discipline, (economics, sociology, organization and systems theory), in order to build new multidisplinary theories of the firm, which will contribute to the debate surrounding the effects of new technology on company strategy and economic growth. Key Features * Links evolutionary economics to sociological analysis * Presents new case studies featuring this synthesis
