Book excerpt: Life is hard enough growing up Odawa in the middle of the twentieth century, but when you are nineteen and discover that what you thought was your life story isn’t, the shock can be devastating. Tehya reacts as any young adult might, demanding answers to the questions that have haunted her most of her life. She struggles to find her way back to the truth she believed was hers forever. Beginning with an indigenous people living near what today is called Lake Michigan, this sweeping historical novel celebrates the wisdom of Indian culture while lamenting lost love, injustice, and death. In addition to Tehya, this is a story of Hands at Work, known by all as Naukee; Faces West, known by all as Lenaya; and other strong Indian women. All of them share a noble heritage with links and ties to ancient warriors, chieftains, healers, treaty signers, and more recent public servants. It is a story woven with threads of family ancestry, survival, and resilience borne of the willow. The voices speak heart-rending truths about how two races of people came face-to-face, forced to learn how to live together within boundaries – often amid forces beyond their control.

This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acting Together volume II continues where the first volume left off, presenting more inspiring examples of peacebuilding performances in conflict-ridden regions. Where the first volume emphasizes theater and ritual's potential for resistance and catharsis in the midst of direct violence and in the aftermath of mass violence, the second volume focuses on performance's ability to bridge gaps and create inclusion in the more subtle context of structural violence and social exclusion. Drawing examples from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe, this volume also includes practical recommendations for policy makers, a toolkit for practitioners, and a wealth of resources for artists and educators.

Book Men in reserve

    Book Details:
  • Author : Juliette Pattinson
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2017-02-01
  • ISBN : 1526106140
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Men in reserve written by Juliette Pattinson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men in reserve focuses on working class civilian men who, as a result of working in reserved occupations, were exempt from enlistment in the armed forces. It uses fifty six newly conducted oral history interviews as well as autobiographies, visual sources and existing archived interviews to explore how this group articulated their wartime experiences and how they positioned themselves in relation to the hegemonic discourse of military masculinity. It considers the range of masculine identities circulating amongst civilian male workers during the war and investigates the extent to which reserved workers draw upon these identities when recalling their wartime selves. It argues that the Second World War was capable of challenging civilian masculinities, positioning the civilian man below that of the 'soldier hero' while, simultaneously, reinforcing them by bolstering the capacity to provide and to earn high wages, frequently in risky and dangerous work, all which were key markers of masculinity.
