Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I only meant to steal a few moments to myself that night as the roar of the guests and the crash of the orchestra had worn my nerves thin. Just a few minutes alone in the hallway to reset myself and focus had been all I wanted. I hadn't meant to see something I shouldn't have. They hadn't known I was there as they brawled and I had watched from the shadows in terror, too petrified to cry out, let alone move. They almost left on their merry way but somehow one of them had sensed me and from that moment I became his prey. He said my soul was the ambrosia he had been hunting for and he would savor it someday when he decided to kill me. He burned his demonic mark into my arm to claim my soul and cackled at my pain. Promising me more if I screamed but I refused to give in to death. If anyone sees the mark they'll know I've been claimed by a demon and I'll be executed by the military and my mangled body used as an example of what it means to become inhuman. And I can't remove the unholy mark either as no one had been able to do so since the dawn of time. But I am my father's daughter and I refuse to go quietly. I made a contract with another monster in hopes he'll keep my soul intact and prevent my early demise but in doing so I've sealed my fate. If the mark is found out I'll be executed. If I do nothing than someday that monster will come back and devour me, body and soul. But if anyone were to find out that I contracted another fey as my ally than I'll be beheaded for treason to the empire. But I refuse to go quietly. Even if it breaks my soul bit by bit, in the end, it's still mine and not in the jaws of the monsters who lurk in the night. But in fighting for my life the secrets of my blood are revealed and the true radiance of my soul is blinding everyone around me. Even me.

Book Blue Fingers Brass Knuckles

Download or read book Blue Fingers Brass Knuckles written by Jennifer L. Martin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1987 at the young age of seventeen, I had to learn to “depend” on others instead of being “Ms. Independent.” I would have never gotten through my exacerbations (attacks) as easily if it weren’t for my courageous, strong, and inspiring mom, Georgia, who helped me get through day-to-day life with the simple things we all take for granted in our lives. I remember back when I was in high school, thinking I was really heavy. All the kids used to laugh at me and call me names like “thunder thighs,” “lard ass,” “big ass” . . . you name it, they called me it. I was embarrassed when it was PE time, I didn’t want to put those skimpy little shorts on, you know the ones back in the ’80s that barely covered your butt cheeks. My thighs stuck out a mile, and I tried covering them up by tying a jacket or shirt around my waste so it would hang over my thighs. I couldn’t run easily because of my weight and asthma. The other kids used to tease me and laugh at me, and I felt like such an outcast. I hated being me. I hated the fact I inherited the “fat” gene and that no matter what new diet I tried, I would lose a few pounds and put it right back on, plus some. During my “honeymoon” period (first six months after surgery) I had to learn a new eating “lifestyle.” It was definitely a learning process, that’s for sure. Once I was able to eat solid foods, I had to try different things to see what my new pouch would tolerate. My surgeons warned me that certain foods might cause “dumping,” which is rapid gastric emptying, also known as dumping syndrome. The total weight I actually lost was 155 pounds! Researchers are finding that 30 percent of weight loss surgery patients have stopped overeating but wind up acquiring a new compulsive disorder such as alcoholism, gambling addiction, compulsive shopping, drugs, promiscuity, or started smoking. Some psychologists describe it as a type of “addiction transfer,” an outcome of substance-abuse treatment where the patient swaps one compulsive behavior for another. The behavior has long been explained as a psychological phenomenon as patients seek new strategies for filling an inner void. Within one month of me having gastric bypass surgery, my endocrinologist asked me to come in for testing for the lumps in my neck. He referred me to a specialist who will conduct biopsies. When I went in to see my endo, she informed me that I have thyroid cancer (malignant) and I will have to have a surgery called a total thyroidectomy. On August 3, I saw my hematologist. He went over my blood work and informed me that my blood levels are low and that a blood transfusion would help me feel better. I would notice a difference within two to three days. He also told me my iron levels were extremely low and I will need to have Iron Infusions every day for the first week, then weekly. Then as time goes by, he’ll adjust how often I get the iron (based on my weekly lab results). My B-12 levels were also extremely low, so I will start B-12 shots weekly at first then go to monthly thereafter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical saga that brings back the past for those who could still remember and for the young who may wish to know how things used to be in the years between 1922 and 1982. From the beginning in pre-war British-ruled Malaya, the story revolves around the life of a boy as he grows to manhood. It traces the migration of his family from Southern Thailand to Penang after his father passes away, his brief childhood living with his young widowed mother who subsequently remarried and thereafter his banishment as a youngster by his stepfather to war-torn Shanghai. On his return, he had to find a way to earn a living and there after, to survive the bloody days of the Japanese Occupation. Even after the surrender of the Japanese, there was the lawless post-war period, in which he saw opportunities to eventually emerge as a taikor (big brother) in Penang's chaotic underworld. Apart from opportunities, the post-war years also saw dangers, like the Emergency period when Communist insurgents tried to destabilise the country. Finally, a nation was born when Malaya became an independent sovereign state. And just as the new nation strived to build a future from its historical legacy, the taikor sought to break away from his past involvement in triad activities to build a new life for himself and his family.

Book Other People

Download or read book Other People written by David Shields and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intellectually thrilling and emotionally wrenching investigation of otherness: the need for one person to understand another person completely, the impossibility of any such absolute knowing, and the erotics of this separation. Can one person know another person? How do we live through other people? Is it possible to fill the gap between people? If not, can art fill that gap? Grappling with these questions, David Shields gives us a book that is something of a revelation: seventy-plus essays, written over the last thirty-five years, reconceived and recombined to form neither a miscellany nor a memoir but a sustained meditation on otherness. The book is divided into five sections: Men, Women, Athletes, Performers, Alter Egos. Whether he is writing about sexual desire or information sickness, George W. Bush or Kurt Cobain, women's eyeglasses or Greek tragedy, Howard Cosell or Bill Murray, the comedy of high school journalism or the agony of first love, Shields's sustained, piercing focus is on the multiplicity of perspectives informing any situation, on the irreducible log jam of human information, and on the possibilities, and impossibilities, for human connection.
