The book deliberates on human fungi kingdom, pathogenesis of different superficial mycological diseases, its classical clinical manifestations and the variants clinical forms, with an emphasis on the relevant differential diagnosis, which sometimes might be confused with superficial mycoses. The book is written in a very practical approach accompanied with images and relevant explanations. The book has two main goals. First, to provide broad information regarding superficial dermatomycological diseases. In addition, it gives emphasis on correct diagnosis, focusing on precise and relevant interpretation of mycological laboratory analysis in order to prevent over-diagnosis and misinterpretation of the disease. The clinical approach -- practically -- is necessary for having correct diagnosis. The final diagnosis will be supported by using the standard laboratory analysis. A unique chapter elaborates widely on laboratory analysis, combined with relevant interpretation of the mycological results. This is due to many different saprophytes fungi which are irrelevant to skin diseases and might be interpreted as relevant, by mistake. Other laboratories techniques are discussed widely as well. The different approaches for mycological analysis are elaborated including the interpretation of false positive and false negative results. Other skin disorders such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and/or many other nails disorders which could be accompanied with relevant or irrelevant different fungi are discussed widely accompanied with very impressive clinical pictures and explanations of how and when to suspect combined disorders. Topical and systemic anti fungi treatment is listed clearly, focusing on the different antifungal mechanisms of each antifungal family. Drug interactions/contra-indications between the antifungal drug/s and other common drugs are presented in detail as well as the possible side effects of the antifungal drugs. New different drugs and devices such as lasers, photo dynamic therapy (PDT), and drilling of the nails also are examined.

Given the expanding population of immune compromised hosts, the list of fungal opportunists grows longer every year. Moreover, antifungal resistance, drug-related toxicity and our limited arsenal of antifungals have exacerbated the situation. To address these problems, strategies such as the identification of novel targets, use of the structure-activity relationship in rational drug design, development of new formulations, modification of existing antifungals to combat resistance, and bioavailability enhancement are called for. For the reader’s convenience, this book has been divided into three sections. The first six chapters of Section I provide a timely review of mycoses, from endemic to cosmopolitan and from generalized to specific, while both chapters of Section II focus on risks associated with mycotoxins. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is characterized by a derangement in cell-mediated immunity leading to opportunistic infections with for example Mycobacterium spp., Candida spp., Cryptococcus neoformans, Pneumocystis carinii, Toxoplasma gondii and Cryptosporidium. The third symposium on "Topics in Mycology" brought together 265 experts from 32 countries to discuss the epidemiology, immmunological and pathogenetic aspects of AIDS and its opportunistic infections in general and fungal infections in particular. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is by far the commonest opportunistic infection in AIDS patients. The nature and classification of P. carinii is still controversial. In search for its true taxonomic affinities an introductory paper formulates a number of key questions. Candidosis is another frequent opportunistic infection. A number of papers discuss the possibility that selective pressures may operate on Candida albicans within the AIDS population and influence its nature: this might have an impact on prophylaxis and curative and/or suppressive therapy.
