Book Mycenaean Pottery

    Book Details:
  • Author : Penelope A. Mountjoy
  • Publisher : Oxford University School of Archaeology
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Mycenaean Pottery written by Penelope A. Mountjoy and published by Oxford University School of Archaeology. This book was released on 1993 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this handbook is to make Mycenaean pottery more accessible to the general reader by presenting a brief description of the different types, placing it against its archaeological and historical background. Mountjoy expands on the illustrations from her 1986 guide Mycenaean Decorated Pottery to include material from different areas of Greece, allowing an examination of the exchange and trade of Mycenean pottery. Particular emphasis is made to the definition of ceramic phases, for although imprecise, changes in pottery style are the best chronological measure for the Aegean Bronze Age.

Book Ceramics and Change in the Early Bronze Age of the Southern Levant

Download or read book Ceramics and Change in the Early Bronze Age of the Southern Levant written by Graham Philip and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out the primary issues and current debates in the use of ceramics to reconstruct and explain cultural economic and social processes in the Early Bronze age. By bringing together research on pottery from various parts of the southern Levant, it allows direct comparison of contemporary material from different regions. Alongside these empirical studies are discussions of general ceramic issues, so that the book highlights the potential of pottery as an investigative tool, and indicates fruitful directions for future research within the traditionally conservative field of Levantine archaeology.

Book Koukounaries I Mycenaean Pottery from Selected Contexts

Download or read book Koukounaries I Mycenaean Pottery from Selected Contexts written by Robert B. Koehl and published by Archaeopress Archaeology. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excavations on the Koukounaries Hill, Paros, Greece, conducted under the direction of Demetrius U. Schilardi for the Archaeological Society at Athens from 1976 to 1992, revealed a 12th century B.C.E. Mycenaean building, an Iron Age settlement, and an Archaic sanctuary. Koukounaries I: Mycenaean Pottery from Selected Contexts presents the pottery from five areas inside the building: three large storerooms, the main east-west corridor, and a small shrine, as well as the pottery from a limited reoccupation after the building's fire destruction and abandonment. The ceramics from the main occupation phase comprise the largest and best-preserved domestic assemblage from the 12th century B.C.E. in the Cyclades and offer important evidence for the continuation of Mycenaean culture after the destruction of the mainland palatial citadels. The small deposits of pottery from the reoccupation phase, provide important stratigraphic evidence for defining the Late Helladic IIIC ceramic sequence. The volume also considers the function of the individual spaces within the building, based largely on the patterns of shape distributions and quantities, with the statistics for each context presented in a series of appendices. Other issues area also explored, including the evidence for itinerant potters, the trade in antique vases, and the place of origin of the settlers who founded and inhabited the Mycenaean building on the summit of the Koukounaries Hill.

Book Human Mobility and Technological Transfer in the Prehistoric Mediterranean

Download or read book Human Mobility and Technological Transfer in the Prehistoric Mediterranean written by Evangelia Kiriatzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diverse forms of regional connectivity in the ancient world have recently become an important focus for those interested in the deep history of globalisation. This volume represents a significant contribution to this new trend as it engages thematically with a wide range of connectivities in the later prehistory of the Mediterranean, from the later Neolithic of northern Greece to the Levantine Iron Age, and with diverse forms of materiality, from pottery and metal to stone and glass. With theoretical overviews from leading thinkers in prehistoric mobilities, and commentaries from top specialists in neighbouring domains, the volume integrates detailed case studies within a comparative framework. The result is a thorough treatment of many of the key issues of regional interaction and technological diversity facing archaeologists working across diverse places and periods. As this book presents key case studies for human and technological mobility across the eastern Mediterranean in later prehistory, it will be of interest primarily to Mediterranean archaeologists, though also to historians and anthropologists.

Book excerpt: This international conference, sponsored jointly by the American School of Classical Studies and the British School of Archaeology at Athens, was dedicated to the memories of Alan John Bayard Wace and Carl William Blegen and to their long archaeological collaboration. The main theme of the conference was taken from their pioneering article, "Pottery as Evidence for Trade and Colonisation in the Aegean Bronze Age", Klio 32 (1939). The papers presented reflect the current state of scholarly opinion about prehistoric pottery from Mainland Greece and the extensive trade in that pottery, 50 years after Wace and Blegen's article. With 39 papers by archaeologists from 13 countries, the volume presents comprehensive surveys by period and area, as well as detailed discussions of new finds and problems, ranging from the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Ages on the Mainland and islands of Greece, as well as Cyprus, the Levant, Egypt, Anatolia and Italy.
