Book My War Memoirs Classic Reprint

Download or read book My War Memoirs Classic Reprint written by Eduard Benes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My War Memoirs Throughout the war I had ample Opportunities of observing the extent to which our national cause was an inseparable factor in the leading events of the Great War and how it was affected by them. It is not possible to form a correct estimate of our revolutionary movement unless this fact is realized. In this book I have made this clear by narrating the details of our movement in relation to the general scope of the points at issue during the war. As regards the war itself, it was on such a vast scale that I have touched upon it only as it affects my narrative. Here and there I was compelled to repeat myself, because our movement had many ramifications, and was connected with events in the various States, which I deal with separately. This may tend to make my account clearer and more comprehensive. I hope that the book will help to remove a number of political misunderstandings or ambiguities, as well as certain historical inaccuracies or erroneous statements which have accumulated during the last few years. It will at least, I think, reduce a number of matters under dispute to their right pro portion. In any case, it is my wish to make clear what should not be doubtful to anybody, namely, that we never drew any distinction between our revolutionary movement at home and abroad, that we placed our diplomatic work on the same footing as the achievements of our troops, and that, in short, we look upon our revolutionary activities at home and abroad, in the council chamber and on the battlefield, as a single unified movement. My chief endeavour has been to give an accurate account of facts, and in writing these memoirs I have been prompted by my attachment to our national cause and also by my attachment to the truth and I want the book to be not only a record of what happened, but also a lesson to be applied to our present and future political problems. Book My War Memories 1914 1918

Download or read book My War Memories 1914 1918 written by General Erich Ludendorff and published by . This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first thing to be made clear is that Ludendorff was NOT a von as he is so often shown, even by reputable historians. Given his enormous prestige and high position in the imperial German Army it is hard to believe he was not von . In his introduction, Ludendorff remarks that he had no time to keep any record of events and the narrative that follows is based chiefly on his memory. He is going to give an account of the "magnificent deeds of the German Army, deeds from which Germany can take heart and "with which my name will for all time be associated . Born on 9 April 1865 in Kruschevnia, Posen district, Ludendorff passed through the Military Academy at Lichterfelde and in 1885 was commissioned into the 57th Infantry Regiment, a Westphalien regiment. After several regimental postings and the Kriegesakademie Ludendorff joined the General Staff being promoted Major in 1900. From March 1904 to January 1913 he was, with only one short interval, in the Operations Department of which he became Chief. In 1913 he was posted to Dusseldorf as CO 39th Fusiliers and in 1914 he moved again, on promotion, to Strasburg as commander 85th Brigade; on the outbreak of war he became Deputy Chief of Staff of General von Bulow s Second Army. Ludendorff first came to notice when he took charge of operations that led to the capture of the fortress of Liege on 7th August 1914, for which he was awarded the Pour le Merite, and which he describes in detail. Two weeks later he was sent to the Eastern Front as Chief of Staff of 8th Army under the newly appointed commander, von Hindenburg. Thus began the partnership that was to last till Ludendorff s resignation over four years later on 26th October 1918. Within a week they had won a crushing victory over the Russians at Tannenberg and became instant heroes. When Hindenburg was appointed Chief of theGeneral Staff in August 1916 and moved to the Western Front, Ludendorff went with him as his deputy in the newly created post of First Quartermaster-General. As the narrative unfolds it is clear how Ludendorff became the driving force though always acknowledging Hindenburg s senior position, and, of course, always paying lip service to the All-Highest. Between they gained control not just of the armed forces but also of Germany s war effort and of the political scene, for example insisting on unrestricted submarine warfare despite the objections of the chancellor, Bethman Hollweg, who resigned. They had become a military dictatorship. Following the failure of the German 1918 offensive Ludendorff suffered a nervous breakdown and was forced to resign, just before the end of the war.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some of My Experiences in the Great War Lready the amount of literature produced by the war has reached formidable dimensions, and I hope I may be forgiven for adding to the ever-growing output. This is not intended as a serious study of military opera tions and deals with no controversial matters either strate gical or political. It is merely a humble effort to place on record some of the events I have witnessed in the various theatres of war. My thanks are due to the proprietors of the Daily Telegraph for allowing me to reproduce some of the scenes which I have from time to in their columns. In one of her books she says that ex pression is the most insistent of human needs, and that the inarticulate man or woman who finds no outlet in speech or in the affections, will often keep a little locked volume in which self can be safely revealed. Her diary occupied just such a place in her own inner life, and for that reason one hesitates to submit its pages even to the most loving and sympathetic scrutiny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Memoirs, Vol. 1 If history is just and cannot be perverted by the fabrication of legends, it should show that by far the greater measure of the responsibility for this war rests with our enemies. The rule of the road at sea puts the blame in collisions on the person who causes the danger of the situation, and not on the one who makes a mistake through incorrect judgment at the last moment in his endeavour to escape from it. Our misfortune, however, did not proceed from the acqui sitiou of power, but from the weakness which did not know how to use that power either for the purpose of preserving or concluding peace, and in addition. Book My War Gone By I Miss It So

Download or read book My War Gone By I Miss It So written by Anthony Loyd and published by September Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Undoubtedly the most powerful and immediate book to emerge from the Balkan horror of ethnic civil war' Antony Beevor, Daily Telegraph In 1993, Anthony Loyd hitchhiked to the Balkans hoping to become a journalist. Leaving behind him the legends of a distinguished military family, he wanted to see 'a real war' for himself. In Bosnia he found one. The cruelty and chaos of the conflict both appalled and embraced him; the adrenalin lure of the action perhaps the loudest siren call of all. In the midst of the daily life-and-death struggle among Bosnia's Serbs, Croats and Muslims, Loyd was inspired by the extraordinary human fortitude he discovered. But returning home he found the void of peacetime too painful to bear, and so began a longstanding personal battle with drug abuse. This harrowing account shows humanity at its worst and best. It is a breathtaking feat of reportage; an uncompromising look at the terrifyingly seductive power of war. 'As good as reporting gets. I have nowhere read a more vivid account of frontline fear and survival. Forget the strategic overview. All war is local' Martin Bell, The Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Second Year of the War War can be brought home to no community until its own sons are dying and risking death. In noth ing are we so much the creatures Of our surround ings as in war. For the first few weeks when I was at home, a nation going its way in an era Of pros perity had an aspect of vulgarity; peace itself was vulgar by contrast with the atmosphere Of heroic sacrifice in which I had lived for over a year. I asked myself if my country could ever rise to the state Of exaltation Of France and England. Though first thought, judging by superficial appearances alone, might have said no, I knew that we could if there ever came a call to defend our soil - a call that could be brought home to the valleys Of the Hudson and the Mississippi as a call was brought home to the valleys of the Somme, the Meuse and the Marne. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Memories Like my country, I was forced into the War. Everyone who knew Belgium up to 1914 will agree that it was a peaceful, industrious and hospitable country. Except for the brutal aggression of which it was the victim, it would have, doubtless, been so still. And I also lived a peaceful, busy life, with friends of every nationality. The war lost me some on whom I thought I could count in compensa tion it brought me others whom I least expected. Modern warfare spares neither age, nor sex, nor profession, nor situation; it is this which constitutes its chief horror. For twelve years I have refused all solicitations to publish my experiences, and if I do so now it is because my silence has allowed various fables to circulate, and I am sometimes quite sur prised when I read of adventures which are attributed by imaginative journalists to me and mine. From the beginning of hostilities I wrote down regularly the small happenings of the day. They were hasty notes, written at odd times, giving the facts as we thought to know them then. Much was modified later, of course. I do not write toplease anyone in particular, neither to do harm to anyone; I only try to write the truth as I saw it, as objectively as possible. It is the mass of the ex periences of an epoch which forms notes for future history. Much has been written from the military and political points of view, but less is known of the life of the inhabitant in occupied territory, where often one had no choice between risking imprison ment, or worse, and betraying a cause of whose justice we were all absolutely convinced, or leaving fellow-countrymen and allies in danger for want of help. From the day when our King, voicing the mind of his whole people, showed us that our duty lay in resistance to an unjust aggression, I think a burning desire to help in the cause of right possessed us all. But I imagined at that time that my share would confine itself to nursing the sick and wounded, and helping and consoling my poorer neighbours. I neither sought adventure, nor cared for it; I tried only to do the duty which presented itself, as I saw so many doing around me. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes From the Battlefield or Southern Life During the War After a lapse of many years a retrospective mood possessed my thoughts, and for abrief period I was no longer a man but a boy full of life, and was once more playing with other children on the grounds of the old homestead, enjoying myself as only a healthy lad can; and while thus musing every scene in the grand but cruel panorama of war passed rapidly before my vision and tempted me so strongly that I could not resist the temptation to write and leave to my only child a true record of events as they occurred during that stormy period of our civil war. This is the only apology I can offer for this faulty little publication; but since it is finished, I now offer it to all who are willing to pass its imperfections by; and hope that some of its readers who were so fortunate as to escape the realities of war may by its perusal glean something of interest. And may some of the characters in it be found worthy of emulation. I have added some very beautiful poems by the best of authors, which will be found ex. Book The Greatest Generation

Download or read book The Greatest Generation written by Tom Brokaw and published by Random House. This book was released on 2000-02-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instant classic that changed the way we saw World War II and an entire generation of Americans, from the beloved journalist whose own iconic career has lasted more than fifty years. In this magnificent testament to a nation and her people, Tom Brokaw brings to life the extraordinary stories of a generation that gave new meaning to courage, sacrifice, and honor. From military heroes to community leaders to ordinary citizens, he profiles men and women who served their country with valor, then came home and transformed it: Senator Daniel Inouye, decorated at the front, fighting prejudice at home; Martha Settle Putney, one of the first black women to serve in the newly formed WACs; Charles Van Gorder, a doctor who set up a MASH-like medical facility in the middle of battle, then opened a small clinic in his hometown; Navy pilot and future president George H. W. Bush, assigned to read the mail of the enlisted men under him, who says that in doing so he “learned about life”; and many other laudable Americans. To this generation that gave so much and asked so little, Brokaw offers eloquent tribute in true stories of everyday heroes in extraordinary times. Praise for The Greatest Generation “Moving . . . a tribute to the members of the World War II generation to whom we Americans and the world owe so much.”—The New York Times Book Review “Full of wonderful, wrenching tales of a generation of heroes. Tom Brokaw reminds us what we are capable of as a people. An inspiring read for those who wish their spirits lifted.”—Colin L. Powell “Offers welcome inspiration . . . It is impossible to read even a few of these accounts and not be touched by the book’s overarching message: We who followed this generation have lived in the midst of greatness.”—The Washington Times “Entirely compelling.”—The Wall Street Journal

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Day: Reminiscences of a Long Life I stood at down by a limitless sea And watched the rose creep over the gray; Till the heavens were a glowing canopy! This was my day! The pale stars stole away, one by one - Like sensitive souls from the presence of Pride: The moon hung low, looking back, as the sun Rose over the tide. And he, like a King, came up from the Sea! He opened my rose - unfettered my song - And quickened a heart to be true to me All the day long. The soul that was born of a song and flower Of tender dawn-flush, and shadowy gray, Was strengthened by Love for a bitter hour That chilled my day. I had dwelt in the garden of the Lord! I had gathered the sweets of a summer day: I was called to stand where a flaming sword Turned every way. It spared not the weak - nor the strong - nor the dear; And following fast, like a phantom band, Famine and Fever and shuddering Fear Swept o'er the land. They whispered that Hope, the angel of light, Would spread her white wings and speed her away; But she folded me close in my longest night And darkest day.
