Book Losing My Religion

Download or read book Losing My Religion written by William Lobdell and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Lobdell's journey of faith—and doubt—may be the most compelling spiritual memoir of our time. Lobdell became a born-again Christian in his late 20s when personal problems—including a failed marriage—drove him to his knees in prayer. As a newly minted evangelical, Lobdell—a veteran journalist—noticed that religion wasn't covered well in the mainstream media, and he prayed for the Lord to put him on the religion beat at a major newspaper. In 1998, his prayers were answered when the Los Angeles Times asked him to write about faith. Yet what happened over the next eight years was a roller-coaster of inspiration, confusion, doubt, and soul-searching as his reporting and experiences slowly chipped away at his faith. While reporting on hundreds of stories, he witnessed a disturbing gap between the tenets of various religions and the behaviors of the faithful and their leaders. He investigated religious institutions that acted less ethically than corrupt Wall St. firms. He found few differences between the morals of Christians and atheists. As this evidence piled up, he started to fear that God didn't exist. He explored every doubt, every question—until, finally, his faith collapsed. After the paper agreed to reassign him, he wrote a personal essay in the summer of 2007 that became an international sensation for its honest exploration of doubt. Losing My Religion is a book about life's deepest questions that speaks to everyone: Lobdell understands the longings and satisfactions of the faithful, as well as the unrelenting power of doubt. How he faced that power, and wrestled with it, is must reading for people of faith and nonbelievers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that will have one cognizant of whatever dark, and bleak circumstances or situations one may be in, and eventually will find themselves in, the answer was here before any problem existed. The discovery and importance of not wasting time and energy concentrating on the problem, it's a waste of time, knowing the answer is never found in the problem it's always revealed in the answer. The search for significance to discover the real you which lives inside of you, that only God the Father can reveal unto you of who you were predestined, ordained, and anointed to be. You'll be taken on a fascinating and exciting journey in your inner most being where you'll locate hidden treasures and gifts, God has deposited inside of you like fireworks ready to explode and reveal the greatness inside of you. This book is filled with the Word of God, and will renew you in the spirit of your mind. You'll begin to look at problems as preparation, trouble, as training and transition, and if one is a doer of the Word and not a hearer only it will transform one into the more than conqueror and overcomer God has created us to be in Jesus Christ! May your testimony inspire readers to know the testimony of Jesus Christ: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. As you prophesy before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings: may this book be like the little book of Revelation 10 when eaten makes the belly bitter, but it shall be in your mouth sweet as honey. Your fellow servant and of your brethren and father in the faith that have the testimony of Jesus. Pastor Houseworth Gary, Indiana

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Vision of Hell: A Sacrifice for Others to See is the title of my book. It is about a dream that God gave to me in 1992. By the end of that same year, I backslid, and after a period of repentance, in 1995, God gave me the order in which to write about it. I was in such a struggle in starting to even write, because regrettably I backslid again in 1996. I realized that this job was not for me. And I knew that God had definitely got the wrong person to write for him. It was in December 2003 when God audibly spoke in my ears, "I've called imperfect people for perfect tasks, and in me [in him] are great victories." Then he said, "Write it down, put it in a book, and tell my people, tell my churches that "HELL, IT IS REAL!"

Book excerpt: When the challenges you've faced threaten to destroy your life, how do you find your way back to the truths you thought you believed? I Am Restored tells the untold story of how Lecrae's past nearly ruined his future--until he learned that the wounds we carry can have the potential to be unlikely guides to healing and freedom for ourselves and others. Throughout I Am Restored, Lecrae documents the shattering yet hopeful story of how he faced the scars of his past--sexual abuse, physical trauma, addiction, and depression--and emerged more fully human than ever before. With remarkable transparency and vulnerability, Lecrae reveals that at the height of his professional success, his life was spinning out of control, driven by a past that he had never confronted and a religious perspective that was incapable of meeting the challenge. I Am Restored takes an unflinching look at the personal and public spaces that are too often at the societal core of our pain and heartache--culture, politics, family, church, and more--and teaches us that forgiveness can be the birthplace of the life that God has created for us. Throughout this powerful, deeply personal account, Lecrae shares the life lessons he's learned about: Confronting the pain and trauma that has shaped your story Breaking the cycle of sin and shame and embracing joy and authenticity Finding hope and healing in the midst of chaos The simple practices that can change your mental, emotional, and spiritual health Leading a life that's bursting with creativity and true freedom I Am Restored is a hopeful, inspiring charge to start your journey to lasting healing today. No matter what your past has held, God is near you, he hears you, and he's not done writing your story.

  • ISBN : 1400205409
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Jesus Religion written by Jefferson Bethke and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abandon dead, dry, religious rule-keeping and embrace the promise of being truly known and deeply loved. Jefferson Bethke burst into the cultural conversation with a passionate, provocative poem titled "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus." The 4-minute video became an overnight sensation, with 7 million YouTube views in its first 48 hours (and 23+ million in a year). Bethke's message clearly struck a chord with believers and nonbelievers alike, triggering an avalanche of responses running the gamut from encouraged to enraged. In his New York Times bestseller Jesus > Religion, Bethke unpacks similar contrasts that he drew in the poem--highlighting the difference between teeth gritting and grace, law and love, performance and peace, despair, and hope. With refreshing candor, he delves into the motivation behind his message, beginning with the unvarnished tale of his own plunge from the pinnacle of a works-based, fake-smile existence that sapped his strength and led him down a path of destructive behavior. Along the way, Bethke gives you the tools you need to: Humbly and prayerfully open your mind Understand Jesus for all that he is View the church from a brand-new perspective Bethke is quick to acknowledge that he's not a pastor or theologian, but simply an ordinary, twenty-something who cried out for a life greater than the one for which he had settled. On this journey, Bethke discovered the real Jesus, who beckoned him with love beyond the props of false religion. Praise for Jesus > Religion: "Jeff's book will make you stop and listen to a voice in your heart that may have been drowned out by the noise of religion. Listen to that voice, then follow it--right to the feet of Jesus." --Bob Goff, author of New York Times bestsellers Love Does and Everybody, Always "The book you hold in your hands is Donald Miller's Blue Like Jazz meets C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity meets Augustine's Confessions. This book is going to awaken an entire generation to Jesus and His grace." --Derwin L. Gray, lead pastor of Transformation Church, author of Limitless Life: Breaking Free from the Labels That Hold You Back

Book My Vision A Journey Through Biblical Truth

Download or read book My Vision A Journey Through Biblical Truth written by Joseph N. Padilla and published by . This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a Christian book writer. I started writing my first book in 1957 I called "Adventure the Long Walk -After-Christ." It took me some forty years to finish; the reason it took me so long I lost confidence, it was my wife who convinced me to go on. She became it and after many years I became her caregiver. She ended confined to her bed and a wheel-chair. In her last three years she was unable to speak, she communicated with me by writing notes. It was sad, but a beautiful unity between us for 53 years. One day she wrote me a note saying, "why don't you go back to your writing?" So, after forty years I took her advice. It took me a couple of years to finish the book. She passed on in 2005, she never got to see my novel. Writing stayed with me as I continued three more books including a children's novel called, Dragon Dee, and the Fire-man. Now My sixth book I call, "My Vision -A journey through Biblical Truth." This vision given to me I will interpret and make it simple to understand. It is the story of abomination that happened in the beginning onto the day Noah entered the ark that seem to be repeating today. I cannot tell why the Lord has placed this manuscript in my mind. The visions that come to me I cannot explain, so I sit and start writing: I have no papers or a degree in theology and I am a bad speller, yet my drive keeps on going. Everything that I write is found in the King James Bible. I comprehend the Word different than most. The interpretations that I write come to life as I go on.

Book A Religion of One s Own

Download or read book A Religion of One s Own written by Thomas Moore and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author and trusted spiritual adviser offers a follow-up to his classic Care of the Soul. Something essential is missing from modern life. Many who’ve turned away from religious institutions—and others who have lived wholly without religion—hunger for more than what contemporary secular life has to offer but are reluctant to follow organized religion’s strict and often inflexible path to spirituality. In A Religion of One’s Own, bestselling author and former monk Thomas Moore explores the myriad possibilities of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion. Two decades ago, Moore’s Care of the Soul touched a chord with millions of readers yearning to integrate spirituality into their everyday lives. In A Religion of One’s Own, Moore expands on the topics he first explored shortly after leaving the monastery. He recounts the benefits of contemplative living that he learned during his twelve years as a monk but also the more original and imaginative spirituality that he later developed and embraced in his secular life. Here, he shares stories of others who are creating their own path: a former football player now on a spiritual quest with the Pueblo Indians, a friend who makes a meditative practice of floral arrangements, and a well-known classical pianist whose audiences sometimes describe having a mystical experience while listening to her performances. Moore weaves their experiences with the wisdom of philosophers, writers, and artists who have rejected materialism and infused their secular lives with transcendence. At a time when so many feel disillusioned with or detached from organized religion yet long for a way to move beyond an exclusively materialistic, rational lifestyle, A Religion of One’s Own points the way to creating an amplified inner life and a world of greater purpose, meaning, and reflection.
