  • Author : Jerry Ellis
  • Publisher : Ballantine Books
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307417662
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Walking to Canterbury written by Jerry Ellis and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than six hundred years ago, the Archbishop of Canterbury was murdered by King Henry II’s knights. Before the Archbishop’s blood dried on the Cathedral floor, the miracles began. The number of pilgrims visiting his shrine in the Middle Ages was so massive that the stone floor wore thin where they knelt to pray. They came seeking healing, penance, or a sign from God. Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, one of the greatest, most enduring works of English literature, is a bigger-than-life drama based on the experience of the medieval pilgrim. Power, politics, friendship, betrayal, martyrdom, miracles, and stories all had a place on the sixty mile path from London to Canterbury, known as the Pilgrim’s Way. Walking to Canterbury is Jerry Ellis’s moving and fascinating account of his own modern pilgrimage along that famous path. Filled with incredible details about medieval life, Ellis’s tale strikingly juxtaposes the contemporary world he passes through on his long hike with the history that peeks out from behind an ancient stone wall or a church. Carrying everything he needs on his back, Ellis stops at pubs and taverns for food and shelter and trades tales with the truly captivating people he meets along the way, just as the pilgrims from the twelfth century would have done. Embarking on a journey that is spiritual and historical, Ellis reveals the wonders of an ancient trek through modern England toward the ultimate goal: enlightenment.

Download or read book COCKROACH SCAM AND OTHER STORIES written by Puneeta Khatri and published by Sapna Book House (P) Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up with Eind Blyton, Nancy Drew, Hans Christian Anderson to name a few I have existed in my world of imagination. My daughter Roopashi and son Rushil have grown up listening to my over imaginative stories which were not read to them from usual books. They like to hear bizarre stories which are weird, wacky, witty and which always have a surprise ending. For most of the time they are the casting directors deciding on the characters and I am supposed to come up with a fascinating story in a jiffy. “Cockroach Scam and other stories,” when I mentioned the title to a friend, she said, “humorous and definitely attention-grabbing.” A child’s world revolves around mother, father, school, teacher, principal, toys and the most important IMAGINATION that is what I have written about. There are incidents in this book which took place when I was in school (not exactly word by word) but then again there are incidents which are totally inventive. Like the story ‘Nutty Ebony’ the idea came when my husband was posted in Bellary (Karnataka). Our cook boiled the egg in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes. The egg was more of a slimy mass which even the street dog refused to eat! My friends in Birmingham, UK who loved my story “The Black Hole” and as my dear friend Jacqueline commented, “That is the shortest science fiction story I have ever heard!” Heartfelt thanks to children’s world magazine, editor Navin Menon, assistant editor Geeta Menon and the editor of ‘Open sesame’, a Deccan Herald publication for printing my thoughts time and again. Over the past years, I have read many of Puneeta Khatri’s stories in the leading dailies. Like most adults, I have enjoyed it with childlike curiosity and enthusiasm. From the quality of her writing and presentation, I can only envisage the excitement a child feels reading her stories is nothing short of total involvement. Puneeta is a versatile writer but her gift for children’s stories is noteworthy. She has been consistently and dedicatedly working towards promoting literature within her home, among her friends and all over the country in numerous ways. Her children have grown up with a mother who can engage them with words and her imagination, instilling in them the love for books. With the release of her first book, Puneeta is only continuing her contribution to children’s literature in India. She is fueling children’s minds with her ability to combine skill, life experiences, humor, suspense and cleverness into simple stories. I have enjoyed reading this collection of stories, and look forward to more from her gifted imagination.
