Download or read book Voyage to Te Wai Pounamu written by Lee Traynor and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holidaying in New Zealand and adventure activities like bungee jumping, canyon swinging, and jetboating up wild rivers are virtually synonymous. But there are other adventures that this country–one of the most isolated in the world–offers. Finding them may not be that easy, nor is getting there and back in one piece. Lee Traynor has therefore explored the two main southern islands of New Zealand: The South Island (Te Wai Pounamu) and Stewart Island, and undertaken a number of shorter and longer hikes (tramps). Among these are the Great Walks of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track, the Kepler Track, and the Milford Track. These three tracks, each with its own distinct personality, are set in spectacular landscapes found only in New Zealand. The utmost technical challenge is, however, the ten-day North-West Circuit of Stewart Island (which includes parts of the Rakiura Track, another Great Walk), a trek through temperate rainforests, all but impassable muddy tracks, and across extensive coastal sand dunes reminiscent of the south-eastern coast of Australia. Lee Traynor recounts the preparations and the two months spent in New Zealand travelling around these southern islands and his adventures on and off the track. Lavishly illustrated with over 175 colour photographs and maps, and 20 black and white photos and diagrams.

Book Dude Where s My Walking Stick

Download or read book Dude Where s My Walking Stick written by Kevin Moore and published by Kevin Moore. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get ready for the out-of-the-ordinary adventure "Dude, Where's My Walking Stick?" Follow in the footsteps of Kevin Moore, an ordinary guy with an extraordinary spirit, as he embarks on a hilariously ill-prepared journey to conquer the rugged South Island section of New Zealand's legendary Te Araroa Trail. With little more than a backpack full of worn-out equipment, a few party favours and a hearty dose of determination, he's about to redefine what it means to take a walk on the wild side. In a world of meticulously planned treks and seasoned hikers, Kevin's quest is refreshingly unconventional. Armed with his trusty companion “Richard,” a sense of humour and sheer audacity, he tackles this challenging trail with a "just wing it" attitude. The results? Equal parts comedy and inspiration. From bewildering encounters with native wildlife to side-splitting misadventures with the incredible people he meets along the way, Kevin's journey is a laugh-out-loud rollercoaster ride through the unbelievably gorgeous landscapes of Aotearoa. But beneath the humour lies a deeper story of human resilience. The impulsive decision to undertake this gruelling 1304-kilometre journey was born from the sudden loss of his mother. The unwavering power of determination, the camaraderie forged with newfound friends, and the unexpected beauty of New Zealand's untamed wilderness serve as guiding lights, leading Kevin through the long pathway of his grief. "Dude, Where's My Walking Stick?" is not just a travel memoir; it's a testament to the enduring human spirit. Through Kevin's escapades and mishaps, you'll discover that sometimes, the most memorable journeys are the ones where you have no idea what you're doing. You'll be inspired to embrace spontaneity, break free from your comfort zone, and tackle life's challenges head-on. Whether you're an avid hiker, an armchair adventurer, or simply looking for a great read that will make you smile, "Dude, Where's My Walking Stick?" is the book you've been waiting for. It's a hilarious, heartwarming, and unforgettable tale of one man's audacious quest to conquer nature, himself, and the unknown. Join Kevin as he blazes through New Zealand’s long-distance trail, one misstep at a time, and discover that sometimes, the best adventures happen when you have no clue what you are doing. Grab your copy today, and get ready to laugh, cheer, and be inspired by "Dude, Where's My Walking Stick?"

Book Indigenous Land Based Knowledge and Sustainability

Download or read book Indigenous Land Based Knowledge and Sustainability written by Ranjan Datta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-09 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the crucial intersections between Indigenous Land-Based Knowledge (ILK), sustainability, settler colonialism, and the ongoing environmental crisis. Contributors from cross-cultural communities, including Indigenous, settlers, immigrants, and refugee communities, discuss why ILK and practice hold great potential for tackling our current environmental crises, particularly addressing the settler colonialism that contributes towards the environmental challenges faced in the world. The authors offer insights into sustainable practices, biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable land management and centre Indigenous perspectives on ILK as a space to practise, preserve, and promote Indigenous cultures. With case studies spanning topics as diverse as land acknowledgements, land-based learning, Indigenous-led water governance, and birth evacuation, this book shows how our responsibility for ILK can benefit collectively by fostering a more inclusive, sustainable, and interconnected world. Through the promotion of Indigenous perspectives and responsibility towards land and community, this volume advocates for a shift in paradigm towards more inclusive and sustainable approaches to environmental sustainability. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental sociology, postcolonial studies, and Indigenous studies.

There has never been a New Zealand novel quite like The Parihaka Woman. Richly imaginative and original, weaving together fact and fiction, it sets the remarkable story of Erenora against the historical background of the turbulent and compelling events that occurred in Parihaka during the 1870s and 1880s. Parihaka is the place Erenora calls home, a peaceful Taranaki settlement overcome by war and land confiscation. As her world is threatened, Erenora must find within herself the strength, courage and ingenuity to protect those whom she loves. And, like a Shakespearean heroine, she must change herself before she can take up her greatest challenge and save her exiled husband, Horitana.
