Book excerpt: “There's a dirty little secret about aviation maintenance: it often breaks aircraft instead of fixing them.” “Manifesto” is the much-anticipated first book from renowned aviation columnist and speaker Mike Busch. Written in typical no-nonsense style, it lays out the basis of Mike's “minimalist” maintenance philosophy for owner-flown general aviation aircraft. An owner who follows the book's guidance can save a small fortune on maintenance costs and end up with a safer, more reliable aircraft. Owners are advised to perform the absolute least amount of maintenance required to make their aircraft safe, reliable and legal… and nothing more. The book explains in detail why engine and propeller TBOs and most other manufacturer-prescribed maintenance intervals should be disregarded. And “Manifesto” explains exactly how to do it. About the Author: Mike Busch is arguably the best-known A&P/IA in general aviation. In 2008, he was honored by the FAA as “National Aviation Maintenance Technician of the Year.” Mike has been a prolific aviation writer for more than four decades. His “Savvy Aviator” columns have appeared in numerous publications including EAA Sport Aviation, AOPA's Opinion Leader's Blog, AVweb, and magazines for the three largest GA type clubs (ABS, CPA, and COPA). He is renowned for his free monthly maintenance webinars and his standing-room-only forums at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Mike has been a pilot and aircraft owner for 45 years with 7,500+ hours logged, and he is a CFIA/I/ME. He's founder and CEO of Savvy Aircraft Maintenance Management, Inc., the world's largest firm providing maintenance-management services for owner-flown aircraft.

Book My Observations Of And Experiences With Leadership In Management

Download or read book My Observations Of And Experiences With Leadership In Management written by John Stearns and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION All of my life, I have wondered why some people are leaders and others are not. This book is sort of an analysis of the relationship between employee, supervisor, manager and leader. In the 1970's, I had the pleasure of working out of a Pan Am training department office at JFK airport, NY, with a fellow who I "observed" as having qualities of leadership. I often thought had he been an officer in the trenches, and called "let's go", his men, without hesitation, would follow him "over the top". He was in management at Pan Am as a Maintenance Technical Instructor. I was conducting classes in management development. Of course, he wasn't a CEO or Vice President, probably because he did not have the necessary formal education, but to me he represented the qualities I would hope to find in those positions. He planned his work, set goals and clearly communicated them to individuals or groups. He comfortably reflected a style of knowledgeable, but modest, self confidence. With a pleasant personality, he seemed to earn the trust of others. It was always evident he had prepared himself through experience and study of the subject he was teaching. I don't know why, but to me, as I saw him perform his work, he was the natural "leader" 14 JOHN STEARNS type. Even though there were several other well qualified instructors in the group, this instructor, John Romaine, came to mind as I prepared to write this book on the subject of leadership in management. I am aware of the many books, courses, and other materials on the subject of management, and I have read many of them, but I believe in using my personal experiences and observations, with the experience of others, it will make clear the difference between "managers" and those who are "leaders in management". MY OBSERVATIONS OF, AND EXPERIENCES WITH LEADERSHIP IN MANAGEMENT 15 It is not my intention to write this as a "personal career" story and therefore, references to my personal experiences are only to be considered as they relate to the subject and not necessarily in chronological order. In writing this book I am motivated by three thoughts— First—most of my life I have mentally noted the differences in styles, manners, and methods of peoples' relationships with others. and then I found that in my working experience I had several opportunities to highlight and explore those items. Secondly—In recent years, the emphasis on selecting leaders has grown. It seems that everyone is always seeking a good leader—tribes, organizations, companies and countries, and too often, when one is selected there follows disappointment. And thirdly, it is helpful to recall the pleasure of working with men and women who were instrumental in accomplishing much that contributed to our society. 16 JOHN STEARNS It is also a recognized fact that there are many in management positions that have made and/ or are making great differences in the lives of people. So in this book instances will be noted in which men and women represent the various styles and manners of leadership in management and make note of the qualities that make some more leaders than others. This book is written as an "observation", with the hope it might encourage people holding management positions to reflect on their style and methods of communicating with others. Opening conclusions: (1) many organizations, with good purpose and intention, find themselves managed so poorly that others live at a disadvantage and unhappiness. (2) in too many instances large companies have had such poor management that millions of people have been hurt financially and otherwise and (3) in many countries on all continents, people find themselves searching for good leaders and when they don't, the results are friction and in many instances, bloodshed. So, my question is, what is it about management and leadership that is so difficult for some men and women to accept and practice? What is the difference between a Manager and a Leader?

Book Aim High

Download or read book Aim High written by Al LÓpez and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description Since the beginning of mankind, there have always been individuals who start life with disadvantages but by sighting their Aim High above mediocrity they have accomplished great things! I chose the title Aim High for this book as an analogy to impress upon the readers that regardless of their beginnings by sighting their Aim High they can go on to be the best that they can be at whatever they want. The key to success is first to develop a desire for something. What do you want out of life? Once a desire is instilled within, motivation follows, and then you must write out a well thought out plan of action on how to do what you want to achieve then you must follow through with action. I believe we all have a purpose in life. The hard part is to find out what that something is. What is your purpose? The soul that has not established aim loses itself. Montaigne (15331592) In the book Aim High I have done my best to present in sixteen steps guidance and stimulus for success. Success does not happen immediately. Achieving success happens by having a series of successes. The first successes are small, but as you move up one step at a time, you will move up to accomplish higher and higher achievements. Aim High is a self-help book about self- improvement. I have written the sixteen-step aim high path to personal achievementstudy guide in a way that I hope will help all who read it improve the quality of their lives. We go through life making choices. We have the capacity to direct our destiny by the choices we make In the Aim High book I have presented sixteen points I call steps: Effort, Example, Enthusiasm, Spiritual, Physical, Personal, Encouragement, Personality, Financial, Career, Looks, Speak, Purpose, Plan, Belief, Action. These sixteen points provide guidance and serve as a stimulus for success through self-motivation. It is the awaking of the inner self to the potential that can be realized. In order to reach your highest and fullest potential, you must first have the courage to think, to imagine, to dream. Dream! What do you want for yourself out of life? What do you desire? The definition of desire in (thesaurus) is synonyms with hunger, craving, longing, and yearning. Desire will stoke your self-motivation to do! Your first priority is to decide and establish what you desire as your goal. Goal setting is the single most important ingredient in self-motivation that leads to achieving success. Your next priority is to write out a specific plan of action about how you are going to achieve your goal, and you should know why you want you desire it. Then go after your goal with passion, a burning desire within you. To do it! My grandson Ryan invited me to go to the movie, The Empire Strikes Back. I was impressed with what the Jedi teacher teaches his student about engaging the force that is the greatest power in the universe. He tells his student that there is no try, that there is either do or not do. Another important ingredient necessary to achieve success is self-confidence. Self-confidence is a by- product of preparation, and in order to succeed you must discipline yourself to establish the habit of doing what need to be done. Now, not tomorrow! Affirm to yourself, I have faith and belief in myself that I will achieve my goal because I expect to achieve it, because I will work hard to do so, and that no matter what the circumstances, I will never give up. Action is what produces results! Do Power! The thrust of Aim High is to implant the sixteen steps outlined in this book into your mind as seeds necessary for success. We are all born with a powerful toolour brain, and it is up to each and every one of us to learn how to use that powerful tool more efficiently and effectively. On the cover of Aim High, there is a red dot in the center. That dot represents you, and you are your own bulls-eye! To try to hit right in the center of the bulls-ey

Book excerpt: Like many other young men during the Vietnam War, Ed Corlew enlisted in hopes of having some influence regarding assignment--safety and training. Instead he found himself in the dangerous door gunner position and, soon after, the crew chief aboard a CH-47 Chinook, 15 miles from the DMZ in 1967 and 1968. Assigned to the famed 1st Cavalry Division, Corlew was shot down three times: in the Battle of Hue, the Battle of Quang Tri, and the A Shau Valley. This memoir began both as a journal and as counselor-recommended therapy for PTSD. He earned four bronze service stars for his service (an estimated 1000 flying hours) during the war's bloodiest year, enduring enemy mortar and rocket attacks. Engaging, frank, and full of action, Corlew describes his many combat experiences as well as the emotional effects--all through the lens of his Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you imagine walking from California to Florida in just over a year? If you could, what would be the purpose? One reason would be to spend the maximum amount of time possible spreading the word about the work of a non-profit organization called Love Justice International, but at the time it was called Tiny Hands International. It is their business to prevent people from being trafficked, then spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them. This was something that I had to be a part of. The original idea was to kick in doors where victims of trafficking were being held against their will, fist or gunfight with the bad guys then run out of that place with the rescuee on my shoulders. Lo and behold, that didn’t happen. Raising money by becoming an advocate of human trafficking prevention seemed more appropriate. So how else would you raise money for such a great cause? By attempting a great feat of course. Instead of being in hand to hand combat with the traffickers, there were many nights spent sleeping on the side of the road eating cold food out of a can. Instead of sleeping under a safe roof at night, it was sleeping in the dirt of the wild. Countless opportunities were made by telling others about Love Justice and the work they were doing. From genuine homeless people generously handing over a single dollar to the wealthy giving hundreds at a time. This is a recollection of everyone who made this journey possible in the attempt to fund the rescue or prevention of 1600 trafficked victims.

Book The Wrong Path

Download or read book The Wrong Path written by Phil R. Bryson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It started in 1965 when I decided to join the navy, but at first I wanted to join the merchant navy but ended up in the royal navy. My reason was to see the world, after all in those days hardly anyone travelled, so to me it seemed a good way to travel. What I hadn't considered was the regimentation, people telling me how to walk, when to get my hair cut. It all started to fall apart when I went to Portland as an aircraft mechanic, it just seemed so boring. When I did go to sea, we never stopped anywhere, but I ended up on an aircraft carrier as part of the search and rescue team. I decided to sort things out for myself and so when the aircraft carrier returned from the States I went on leave and then deserted and went to Sweden. Initially my objective was to try and obtain political asylum but I ended up hitching and working in Europe. I knew then that I'd made a mistake as I should've just travelled, but I returned to England, was caught and ended up in naval prison. This is far from being a gung ho story about life in the navy, but it is different and hopefully it might make you smile.
