This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descendants of John Tanner: Born August 15, 1778, at Hopkintown, R. I., Died April 15, 1850, at South Cottonwood, Salt Lake County, Utah The Mormon Church has been noted for the numerous posterity of its early scions. No one compares in number of his posterity with John Tanner who arrived in Utah m 1848 and died in 1850. The Reverend George C. Tanner has given 'us a brief statement of the manner in Which the data for his book was Collected. Following his explanation there is included brief excerpts from his book. These excerpts connect the earliest family record with John Tanner. The responsibility for the large undertaking in writing the gene alogy of John Tanner IS due to his great grandson Maurice Tan ner, whose pains -taking care and persistent determination has brought the present Genealogy to its completion. The Genealogy has been years in the course of preparation. Replies to letters of inquiry have not always been ungrudgingly given, and but for the love and pride for his ancestors by the author of this book, its completion might have been postponed for many years. Maurice Tanner has repeatedly expressed his acknowledgments to Apostle Franc1s M. Lyman for the latter' s accumulation of data respecting the descendants of John Tanner. Much of this data has been collected during visits that President F. M. Lyman made across the continent. At a meeting of the Tanner association. An executive committee consisting of J. M. Tanner, Rollin R. Tanner and Nathan A. Tanner was chosen. Maurice Tanner was chosen president of the as sociation, Earl Pingree Tanner its genealogist and Nathaniel H. Tan ner i'ts secretary and treasurer. Some names of the descendants of John Tanner the president was unable to secure and all the branches of the family could not be included in this volume without great extra work. It was quite impossible to obtain them as this volume goes to press. A volume of considerable size will be made from the names al ready collected. The names of the remaining descendants may at a future time be obtained when the association appoints someone for the duty of completing the work of the Genealogy of John Tanner. Book The Start 1904 1930

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The former CBS foreign correspondent provides an invaluable look back at his life—and the events that forged the twentieth century. A renowned journalist and author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, William L. Shirer chronicles his own life story—in a personal history that parallels the greater historical events for which he served as a witness. In the first of a three-volume series, Shirer tells of his early life, growing up in Cedar Rapids, and later serving as a new reporter in Paris. In this surprisingly intimate account, Shirer details his youthful challenges, setbacks, rebellions, and insights into the world around him. He offers personal accounts of his friendships with notable people including Isadora Duncan, Ernest Hemingway, and Sinclair Lewis. This fascinating personal account also provides an illuminating look into a lost pre-World War II era—and is notable as much for its historical value as for its autobiographical detail. Ideal for anyone fascinated by this period in history.

Book William L Shirer Twentieth Century Journey

Download or read book William L Shirer Twentieth Century Journey written by William L. Shirer and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 1934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in one volume: the three-part autobiography from the National Book Award–winning author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. The former CBS foreign correspondent and historian provides an invaluable look back at his life—and the events that forged the twentieth century. The Start (1904-1930): In the first of a three-volume series, Shirer tells the story of his early life, growing up in Cedar Rapids, and later serving as a new reporter in Paris. The Nightmare Years (1930-1940): In the second of a three-volume series, Shirer chronicles his time in Europe as Hitler dominated Germany and began one of the most dangerous conflicts in world history. A Native’s Return (1945-1988): The most personal of the three volumes, this edition offers an honest look at the many personal and professional setbacks Shirer experienced after World War II ended—and delivers a fascinating take on the aftermath of the war. Series praise “Mr. Shirer stirs the ashes of memory in a personal way that results in both a strong view of world events and of the need for outspoken journalism. Had Mr. Shirer been merely a bland ‘objective’ reporter without passion while covering Hitler’s Third Reich, this book and his other histories could never have been written.” —The New York Times “Included in Shirer’s well-wrought narrative are such little-known events as the trials of American broadcasters who propagandized for the Third Reich during WWII, as well as such more familiar matters as the McCarthyism of the 1950s. The author’s comments are refreshingly unfettered by self-consciousness . . . A fine, fitting conclusion to an important work of autobiography.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book constitutes a very welcome contribution to the public appreciation and scholarly study of Henry Ossawa Tanner, a painter of considerable significance in both Europe and America, and one whose religious imagery merits careful consideration. These well-researched essays by an international team of scholars offer substantial reflections on complex issues of race and religion, and situate the artist’s work and career within the context of his life and times. This is a robust framing of Tanner as a cultural phenomenon and one that readers will find quite rewarding.”—David Morgan, Professor of Religion at Duke University and author of The Embodied Eye: Religious Visual Culture and the Social Life of Feeling “Henry Ossawa Tanner has finally been recognized as an important artist in the last twenty years, and is now firmly part of the American canon as the first major African American painter to emerge from the academy. This book enriches our understanding of Tanner’s historic place in American art by considering his work as an early modernist religious artist—a status entwined with his race, but not defined by it. These essays, by an impressive collection of scholars, are full of substantially new material, and succeed in broadening our conception of Tanner’s life and work.”—Bruce Robertson, Professor of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
