Book My Side of the Sperry Family Line

Download or read book My Side of the Sperry Family Line written by Greta Young Daigle and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A short history of our line of the Sperry family as researched and remembered by Greta Daigle, 2024 My paternal grandmother was Mary Theresa Sperry, who loved to tell the family stories. Through her and through my parents, Maurice Sperry Young and Marion Kirch Young, I developed a strong passion for genealogy, and especially our own family stories. I loved her story that we were descended from pirates. We have traced the Sperry family back to John Sperry, born 1540 in Bedfordshire, England. The first Sperry to come to America was Richard Sperry, who came to America in 1637. Richard is known to have aided the judges who condemned Charles 1 to death and escaped England as a "Regicide". It is through the Sperrys that we are related to Benjamin Franklin, who is my 1st cousin, 9 times removed. We are also related to Sperry Flour in California, Sperry Gyroscopes who later evolved into Honeywell Corp. and to the Sperry Shoes. We have a long line of Adirondack Guides and creators and builders and regular people too. This is a very consolidated version of my line, back through the Sperrys. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Book excerpt: The award-winning New York Times bestseller about the American women who secretly served as codebreakers during World War II--a "prodigiously researched and engrossing" (New York Times) book that "shines a light on a hidden chapter of American history" (Denver Post). Recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than ten thousand women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of code-breaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them. A strict vow of secrecy nearly erased their efforts from history; now, through dazzling research and interviews with surviving code girls, bestselling author Liza Mundy brings to life this riveting and vital story of American courage, service, and scientific accomplishment.

Book Public Faces Secret Lives

Download or read book Public Faces Secret Lives written by Wendy L. Rouse and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2024-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention for the 2023 Francis Richardson Keller-Sierra Prize 2023 Judy Grahn Award-Publishing Triangle Finalist Restores queer suffragists to their rightful place in the history of the struggle for women’s right to vote The women’s suffrage movement, much like many other civil rights movements, has an important and often unrecognized queer history. In Public Faces, Secret Lives Wendy L. Rouse reveals that, contrary to popular belief, the suffrage movement included a variety of individuals who represented a range of genders and sexualities. However, owing to the constant pressure to present a “respectable” public image, suffrage leaders publicly conformed to gendered views of ideal womanhood in order to make women’s suffrage more palatable to the public. Rouse argues that queer suffragists did take meaningful action to assert their identities and legacies by challenging traditional concepts of domesticity, family, space, and death in both subtly subversive and radically transformative ways. Queer suffragists also built lasting alliances and developed innovative strategies in order to protect their most intimate relationships, ones that were ultimately crucial to the success of the suffrage movement. Public Faces, Secret Lives is the first work to truly recenter queer figures in the women’s suffrage movement, highlighting their immense contributions as well as their numerous sacrifices.
