Book excerpt: "...beautiful and compelling..." -Lisa Moses Leff, Professor of History, American University, and winner of the 2016 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature Excerpts long-listed for international 2019 Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize and awarded 1st Place in 2019 Essay Contest of Bethesda Magazine. A memoir of survival. A mother's survival of the Holocaust. A daughter's survival of her legacy of trauma. The little known story of Dutch Holocaust survivors escaping Nazi-occupied Europe through Vichy France onto a ship for Surinam. Ingrid Alpern is the daughter of a Dutch Holocaust survivor mother and an Evangelical father from Indiana who divorced early in her childhood. Her life separated into "the real world" with her Jewish family and "the world that didn't exist" of visits from the birth father she had to keep secret and was taught to disdain. Seventeen years after his visits ended, Ingrid revealed her secret and found the courage to confront her identity. My Separate Worlds: Daughter of the Holocaust and Evangelical Christianity illuminates the cultural divisions in America and a father and daughter learning to communicate across them. The Doll, a narrative essay included in the book, recounts a Holocaust survivor's escape from the Nazis and a daughter's struggle to break free from her mother's trauma. Together they convey a universal message about the Second Generation of any group subjected to atrocity and genocide.

Book Our Separate Ways

Download or read book Our Separate Ways written by Ella L. J. Bell Smith and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2003-03-24 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Our Separate Ways, authors Ella Bell and Stella Nkomo take an unflinching look at the surprising differences between black and white women's trials and triumphs on their way up the corporate ladder. Based on groundbreaking research that spanned eight years, Our Separate Ways compares and contrasts the experiences of 120 black and white female managers in the American business arena. In-depth histories bring to life the women's powerful and often difficult journeys from childhood to professional success, highlighting the roles that gender, race, and class played in their development. Although successful professional women come from widely diverse family backgrounds, educational experiences, and community values, they share a common assumption upon entering the workforce: "I have a chance." Along the way, however, they discover that people question their authority, challenge their intelligence, and discount their ideas. And while gender is a common denominator among these women, race and class are often wedges between them. In Our Separate Ways, you will find candid discussions about stereotypes, learn how black women's early experiences affect their attitudes in the business world, become aware of how white women have--perhaps unwittingly--aligned themselves more often with white men than with black women, and see ways that our country continues to come to terms with diversity in all of its dimensions. Whether you are a human resources director wondering why you're having trouble retaining black women, a white female manager considering the role of race in your office, or a black female manager searching for perspectives, you will find fresh insights about how black and white women's struggles differ and encounter provocative ideas for creating a better workplace environment for everyone.

Book My Several Worlds

Download or read book My Several Worlds written by Pearl S. Buck and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir from the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. “Not only [Buck’s] most important book, but—on many counts—her best book” (Kirkus Reviews). Often regarded as one of Pearl S. Buck’s most significant works, My Several Worlds is the memoir of a major novelist and one of the key American chroniclers of China. Buck, who was born to missionary parents in 1892, spent much of the first portion of her life in China, experiencing the Boxer Rebellion first hand and becoming involved with the society with an intimacy available to few outside observers. The book is not only an important reflection on that nation’s modern history, but also an account of her re-engagement with America and the intense activity that characterized her life there, from her prolific novel-writing to her loves and friendships to her work for abandoned children and other humanitarian causes. As alive with incident as it is illuminating in its philosophy, My Several Worlds is essential reading for travelers and readers alike. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... remarkable... " --Foreign Affairs "... illuminates the workings of institutionalized racism through the correspondence of three South African women in the 1940s and '50s." --Feminist Bookstore News "The history of a place and time is made vivid by the combination of the rich personal record of the letters and the theoretically framed analytic discussion. The result is new insight into the history of black education in South Africa, and a revealing study of the dynamics of women's relations under colonialism across the lines of race, age and power." --Susan Greenstein, The Women's Review of Books "A riveting and revealing book--one in which few of the characters wear hats that are spotlessly white." --Third World Resources "This rich collection of letters deserves its own reading, as do Shula Marks's bracketing essays. They are invaluable for clarifying the myriad ramifications that the letters raise for African women." --International Journal of African Historical Studies "... powerful and perceptive....speak s] eloquently to a Western audience that is poised to deal with the political and personal lives of South African women in an intimate holistic fashion." --Belles Lettres The roots of modern Apartheid are exposed through the painful and revealing correspondence of three very different South African women--two black and one "liberal" white--from 1949 to 1951. Although the letters speak for themselves, the editor has written an introduction and epilogue which tell of the tragic ending to this riveting story.

Book Our Separate Ways

  • Author : Christina Greene
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2006-03-13
  • ISBN : 0807876372

Download or read book Our Separate Ways written by Christina Greene and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-03-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an in-depth community study of women in the civil rights movement, Christina Greene examines how several generations of black and white women, low-income as well as more affluent, shaped the struggle for black freedom in Durham, North Carolina. In the city long known as "the capital of the black middle class," Greene finds that, in fact, low-income African American women were the sustaining force for change. Greene demonstrates that women activists frequently were more organized, more militant, and more numerous than their male counterparts. They brought new approaches and strategies to protest, leadership, and racial politics. Arguing that race was not automatically a unifying force, Greene sheds new light on the class and gender fault lines within Durham's black community. While middle-class black leaders cautiously negotiated with whites in the boardroom, low-income black women were coordinating direct action in hair salons and neighborhood meetings. Greene's analysis challenges scholars and activists to rethink the contours of grassroots activism in the struggle for racial and economic justice in postwar America. She provides fresh insight into the changing nature of southern white liberalism and interracial alliances, the desegregation of schools and public accommodations, and the battle to end employment discrimination and urban poverty.

Book Linking Separate Worlds

Download or read book Linking Separate Worlds written by Karsten Paerregaard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking ethnography of population movements between rural and urban places in Peru addresses the conceptual and methodological problems of studying ‘deterritorialized' populations and the implications of this for anthropology's notions of culture and identity. Based on extensive fieldwork, this book explores the economic, social and ritual bonds which link migrants in Peru's major cities to their Andean native village. Many urban migrants establish networks based on kinship and marriage ties to exploit resources in the city as well as the village. These networks ensure they maintain strong links to their native village. Fiestas, soccer tournaments and folklore festivals also play a crucial role in the formation of migrant communities in Peru's cities. The author analyses these performance practices and shows how they give rise to the creation of new social identities. The participation of second generation migrants, returning migrants, and migrant spouses in village life is also discussed.

Although women come from widely diverse backgrounds, they share a common assumption upon entering the workforce: "I have a chance." Book Little Lessons from the Saints

Download or read book Little Lessons from the Saints written by Bob Burnham and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Best Book Awards, Finalist: Religion—Christianity Far too many Catholics think of the saints as old, cold, and irrelevant to everyday life. Catechist and spiritual director Bob Burnham, however, experiences the saints as something quite different: beautiful examples of people who, though flawed like us, opened themselves to God’s grace and can teach us to do the same. In Little Lessons from the Saints, Burnham skips the typical biographies of saints and offers instead brief but powerful spiritual lessons from 52 different saints, each followed by a short meditation. Chapters are grouped under five main themes: Surrender, Freedom, Pilgrimage, Hospitality, and Loving Knowledge. Burnham succeeds in offering simple ways to apply each saint’s particular charism to our own lives. Inspiring and practical, Little Lessons from the Saints helps us realize that we, too, are called to be saints.

Book The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible

Download or read book The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible written by Charles Eisenstein and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday A beacon of hope in the face of our current world crises, this uplifting book demonstrates how embracing our interconnectedness is key to world transformation In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what’s true: we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power. By fully embracing and practicing this principle of interconnectedness—called interbeing—we become more effective agents of change and have a stronger positive influence on the world. Throughout the book, Eisenstein relates real-life stories showing how small, individual acts of courage, kindness, and self-trust can change our culture’s guiding narrative of separation, which, he shows, has generated the present planetary crisis. He brings to conscious awareness a deep wisdom we all innately know: until we get ourselves in order, any action we take—no matter how good our intentions—will ultimately be wrong-headed and wrong-hearted. Above all, Eisenstein invites us to embrace a radically different understanding of cause and effect, sounding a clarion call to surrender our old worldview of separation, so that we can finally create the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible. With chapters covering separation, interbeing, despair, hope, pain, pleasure, consciousness, and many more, the book invites us to let the old Story of Separation fall away so that we can stand firmly in a Story of Interbeing.

Book Indian Art Worlds in Contention

Download or read book Indian Art Worlds in Contention written by Helle Bundgaard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book explores the opinions of artists, critics and others involved with arts or crafts, arguing for a theory that considers the different discursive formations and related strategic practices of an art world. Focusing on Orissan patta paintings in India the author examines the local, regional and national discourses involved. In so doing, the text demonstrates that, while painters' local discourses are characterised by pragmatism, the discourses of regional and especially national elites are concerned with the exegesis of local paintings and their association with the great Sanskrit tradition A central theme of the study focuses on the awards given for skill in craft making and their changing significance as they pass from national and regional elites to local painters. It is shown how certain key actions by local painters result from a clash between local discourses on the one hand and regional and national discourses on the other.
