Book excerpt: Hey! I’m John Sullivan, a recent high school graduate who collected his thoughts and dreams and hopes and fears and all kinds of other stuff in a year-long diary through his senior year. When I finished on graduation day, I realized I had quite a collection, as a matter of fact, I had more than 400 pages! So I thought about it and realized that it had a beginning, a middle, and an end, so therefore it told a complete story, which I think might be a book if I remember my sophomore literature class correctly. I am NOT saying it is literature (ha-ha), but I do think it is a book. That is where you come in. I don’t think it is much of a book if I’m the only one who reads it. It is just a diary then, that will remain on the floppy disk in my computer desk in my bedroom. Instead, you could read it. And tell me what you think. And then I will know if I should have left it in that computer desk. Or not. If you do read it, you’ll find that I didn’t leave anything out, even the stuff that might embarrass me. I could even still get into some trouble about some of it, but I think I’m ok because I don’t think my parents will want to read it because they were there for almost all of it, so it would be a rerun for them. I don’t think reruns are bad, but they already lived through this once, so they probably don’t want to get all upset allover again. So, go ahead and click away. It was an adventure for me – come on along for the ride! John Sullivan is right. This is quite an undertaking for a senior in high school. But that is what it is – a diary, a coming of age novel, a satire, and, incredibly, a love story. It is a unique look at one of the most important developmental periods in a person’s life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rule #1: If at all possible, don’t pretend to be something you’re not. Specifically, don’t play dead. Trust me on this one. I did it, so I should know. Jo O’Connor has spent her whole life moving around. When it comes to new schools, there’s not a trick in the book about starting over that Jo doesn’t know. But life is about to teach her a new trick: how to disappear entirely. Rule #2: Always expect the Spanish Inquisition, no matter what anyone else does. They have to move again. Now. This very night. Jo knows better than to argue. Her dad is the key witness in a major case against a big-time bad guy. But Jo just can’t resist one last visit to the school where she’s been so happy. All she wants is to say good-bye. That can’t cause any problems, can it? Rule #3: Never assume you can predict the future. Now Jo’s one last visit has landed her smack in the middle of a ghost story. Specifically, her own. By the time it’s over, she’ll have a whole new set of rules about what’s real, what’s make-believe, and—most of all—what’s important.

Book The Chemistry of Human Nature

Download or read book The Chemistry of Human Nature written by Tom Husband and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does chocolate taste so good? Why do we seek 'the one'? How do traits such as intelligence, creativity and violence arise and what purpose do they serve? This book links these characteristics to the origins of life, showing that the conditions necessary to bring life into existence echo through our modern day behaviour. The chemistry of the body is not only fascinating but also highly relevant to everyone, since we are all concerned with maximising our health and enjoyment of life. Currently, there are not many popular science books concerned with biochemistry. One reason for this might be the particularly complex nature of the science involved. This book starts with the fundamentals and then works towards a deeper understanding of the chemistry of human nature. Essential reading for anyone with an interest in this science and written at a level accessible to experts and non-experts alike.

Book The Real World of College

Download or read book The Real World of College written by Wendy Fischman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why higher education in the United States has lost its way, and how universities and colleges can focus sharply on their core mission. For The Real World of College, Wendy Fischman and Howard Gardner analyzed in-depth interviews with more than 2,000 students, alumni, faculty, administrators, parents, trustees, and others, which were conducted at ten institutions ranging from highly selective liberal arts colleges to less-selective state schools. What they found challenged characterizations in the media: students are not preoccupied by political correctness, free speech, or even the cost of college. They are most concerned about their GPA and their resumes; they see jobs and earning potential as more important than learning. Many say they face mental health challenges, fear that they don’t belong, and feel a deep sense of alienation. Given this daily reality for students, has higher education lost its way? Fischman and Gardner contend that US universities and colleges must focus sharply on their core educational mission. Fischman and Gardner, both recognized authorities on education and learning, argue that higher education in the United States has lost sight of its principal reason for existing: not vocational training, not the provision of campus amenities, but to increase what Fischman and Gardner call “higher education capital”—to help students think well and broadly, express themselves clearly, explore new areas, and be open to possible transformations. Fischman and Gardner offer cogent recommendations for how every college can become a community of learners who are open to change as thinkers, citizens, and human beings.

Book excerpt: Chris Herrmann never intended to take a gap year. Certainly not a senior gap year. Life was too comfortable in Perth, Western Australia. Grandchildren were coming along one after another. Living the family dream. But suddenly life threw a spanner in the works. The reality hit. It's not something that just happens to other people. He was now on his own. Life is a journey. Not a destination. He knew that. There were however a hundred reasons why not to do this gap year. To give up his home in one of Perth's most beautiful locations, sell the furniture, sell the car, say goodbye to family and friends. To take off for twelve months backpacking around the other side of the world. What, giving all this up? Surely, you're too old. And what, travelling solo? But his gut feeling kept saying otherwise. Thankfully his gut feeling won out. My Senior Gap Year, The Book, tells his story in his own unique style. From pushing himself out of his own comfort zone. From not knowing a word of Spanish to his humorous attempts to communicate with the people he encountered. Navigating his own way around from one country to another. Experiencing every form of transport from a horse and cart to a five star coach. From sleeping on the floor of a Buddhist temple to a mat in the middle of a jungle. Finding himself left literally penniless in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country. And how his experiences with the people he met, like drugs, waste, terrorism have changed his views. He left with no purpose, other than to step out the door, travel and explore. But then how he turned an opportunity he discovered in the middle of the desert to benefiting charities worth around quarter million dollars. And that was just at the beginning of his journey. My Senior Gap Year. It's never too late.

Book The Senior

Download or read book The Senior written by Mike Flynt and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s Never Too Late to Tackle Your Dreams! Mike Flynt was swapping stories with some old football buddies when he brought up the biggest regret of his life: getting kicked off the college team before his senior year. So, one of his pals said, "Why not do something about it?" Most 59-year-olds would have laughed. Flynt's only concern was his eligibility. He not only returned to college football, but actually made the team at his alma mater - Sul Ross State, an NCAA division III school. His remarkable story begins with a tough upbringing by a violent father who trained him to fight at every opportunity. His fighting habit took him in and out of jail several times, until a faith conversion turned his life around on the very day he was contemplating suicide. Mike Flynt has much to offer others, not only through his story, but through his belief that it’s never too late for God to heal your heart and fulfill your dreams. Foreword by NBA Superstar LeBron James.
