Book My Second Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Second Country Classic Reprint written by Robert Dell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Second Country The title of this book has not been chosen at random: it is literally true. France has been my home for more than twelve years, but it was already my second country long before I went to live there. Indeed I cannot remember a time when France had not a large place in my affections. Among my earliest recollections are the pictures of the Franco German War of 1870 in the bound volumes of the Illustrated London News which we had at home. Perhaps my elders who showed and explained the pictures to me were themselves Francophile; they must have been, or how should I at that early age have been filled, as I was, with enthusiasm for the cause of France and indignation at the wrongs that she had suffered? Later on Victor Hugo and Swinburne intensified my love and admiration for France and gave it a more reasoned basis; France became for me the country of the Revolution, the symbol of democracy and republicanism. Since then my opinions on almost every subject have Changed more than once, as must the opinions of any man that has lived more than fifty years in this world, unless his existence has been that of a vegetable, but the enthusiasm for revolutionary and republican France has never changed or diminished. However, I am not here to tell you of his work, but it is interesting in so far as it shows you how it came about that I stood for Parliament at all. Unless he had been the kind of man that he was, I don't believe that the first woman Member of the oldest Parliament in the world would have come from Plymouth - and that would have been a pity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Vine Country Not long after this my second cousin lost her temper, and said she hated cubbing, and wished she was back in Connemara, or anywhere out of the county Cork. This expression of opinion occurred when she was picking herself up out of a potato furrow, into which she and her horse had ingloriously rolled, and it was a good deal embittered by the fact that she had hurt her knee, torn her habit, and broken her hunting crop. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Lest We Forget!" God and Country When I speak of two-score nationalities, my contention may be questioned, but a brief consideration of post-war events in Europe will quickly disclose its accuracy. When the question of self determination of small nations arose, nations of which most of the people of this country had never heard, sprang up especially in the territory formerly held by austria-hungary, in Russia and the Balkans. The fact that they have sprung up, and in many cases have just claims to nationality, based upon mother tongue, traits, and physical characteristics, I submit in support of my premise that most of the immigrants who have come to this country have not been assimilated. He had neither visited nor taken other notice of me since I came; and I confess that I found it difficult, on the instant, to repress a feeling of something like indignation, that he should thus unceremoniously call upon me for professional help. Nevertheless, as the case was urgent, being explained to be one of sud den indisposition, I did not hesitate as to the course to be adopted, but met the clerk's de mand with an assurance, that provided he could so distribute the hours as not to clash with the order of my own services, I would take care that his church should not be shut up. The man readily undertook to manage this matter, and we parted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Factfulness

  • ISBN : 125012381X
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Factfulness written by Hans Rosling and published by Flatiron Books. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “One of the most important books I’ve ever read—an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates “Hans Rosling tells the story of ‘the secret silent miracle of human progress’ as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.” —Melinda Gates "Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases." - Former U.S. President Barack Obama Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends—what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school—we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective—from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse). Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future. --- “This book is my last battle in my life-long mission to fight devastating ignorance...Previously I armed myself with huge data sets, eye-opening software, an energetic learning style and a Swedish bayonet for sword-swallowing. It wasn’t enough. But I hope this book will be.” Hans Rosling, February 2017.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from This, That, and the Other With what aim I have gathered these sketches into a. Volume, I can hardly say. I certainly have never aspired to be a professional book-maker, and my highest ambition is to find friends among my readers; those who dream over my pages beneath the trees in summer, or turn the leaves beside the cottage hearth in winter. I have not borrowed from the dead world of books. I have only grouped together such fancies as the country sunshine writes out upon the meadow-grass, or the wild birds sing to each other while they build their nests. I have always found the world so kind, I do not doubt that there are some who will remember that my owers are only violets of the spring, and will pardon me when they fail to find the Splendor of summer or the mellow ripeness of autumn.
