Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures The word "Pentwall" is not in the dictionary. Actually it has no meaning. But I thought it might tickle your curiosity. If I headed this page as "Preface" probably you would not read it. Few people read Prefaces. But I want to save you from having to wade through this book in order to find out what it is about. So I tell you, here and now, that it records incidents and impressions of my recent trip round Africa, and that one of its objects is to encourage people - especially Scouts and other young creatures - to travel. You see, life is short; yet much of it is wasted by people becoming vegetables, and not very satisfied or satisfactory vegetables at that. Whereas a little roaming about this wonderful globe while they are on it can give them that wider outlook and those greater sympathies which develop the soul in the individual and goodwill and peace in the world. Knowing this of the book, you can now take it or leave it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother of All Living: A Novel of Africa But that was not quite all. There was another message in the reeling miles. Sometimes they spun through the thick forests of wattle plantations, the trees gleaming silver in the sun that filtered between their leaves, and she took in every detail - the piled logs in the clearings, the stripped bark arranged in long rows to dry, the acres of young trees, and the burnt patches of old ones. But there lurked a mystery, it seemed to her, in those lonely plantations. Or again they climbed out on to the hills of a native reserve, and she looked out over the undulating veld, the rounded kopjes and the deep-cut valleys. Little patches of unfenced cultivation clung to the sides of them, and on the crests clustered the brown thatched huts silent and deserted in the sun. She wanted to get out and look in. At school, the girls had listened entranced to her casual references to 'boys' and black folk, but back here the fact that she was living among an alien race who set her standard of conventionalities at defiance, suddenly confronted her as a new thing. Book Europe in Africa the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Europe in Africa the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Latimer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe in Africa, the Nineteenth Century Do my readers know what is meant by a "short yarn"? It is the nautical phrase for a story that has been broken off short, - a narrative that has never reached its legitimate conclusion. This book is a volume of "short yarns." They will probably be found to have their ends somewhere in the coming century. Meantime it seems well to know something of the beginnings of what in years to come may interest the world exceedingly. "Europe in Africa in the Nineteenth Century" has been a vast subject to be crowded into the limits which I have allowed myself in this series. If I am told by my critics that my book is deficient in historical perspective, I can only reply: "You are right; but my aim has been to tell only what interested myself, and what I hoped might be interesting to other people. I therefore have put many persons, events, and other matters into the foreground, which, if I aimed to be an historian, I ought to have relegated to a less prominent position." Almost every chapter of the book forms a narrative by itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Briton or Boer?: A Tale of the Fight for Africa In the following romance I have attempted to answer in the form of an essay in prophetic fiction the question which forms the title of the story: 'Is the Briton or the Boer, the Englishman or the Dutch-Afrikander, going to rule South Africa?' My answer, however near to or far from the actual truth it may prove to be, has been thought out and formulated in the country which, as I, with many others of longer and wider experience in South African affairs than I possess, firmly believe will be the scene of the inevitable struggle for absolute and necessary supremacy, and amidst daily converse with the people who will be the chief actors in the drama. Book excerpt: General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck is best known as the German commander in German East Africa in World War I. He was undefeated in that campaign against British and Commonwealth forces. Those experiences were recorded in his book "My Reminiscences of East Africa." "My Life" covers his non East African service. It is in effect his autobiography. "My Life" is the story of a remarkable man who served his country in the most difficult times and places. His career included service with German forces in the China Relief expedition (Boxer Rebellion) and as an officer in German Southwest Africa during the native uprisings of the early 1900s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck (20 March 1870 – 9 March 1964) was a general in the Imperial German Army and the commander of its forces in the German East Africa campaign. For four years, with a force that never exceeded about 14,000 (3,000 Germans and 11,000 Africans), he held in check a much larger force of 300,000 British, Belgian, and Portuguese troops. Essentially undefeated in the field, von Lettow-Vorbeck was the only German commander to successfully invade imperial British soil during World War I. His exploits in the campaign have come down "as the greatest single guerrilla operation in history, and the most successful." [Source: Wikipedia]
