Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Castles by the Rhine: A Triptychal Yarn I T was about seven o'clock in the evening of a day in the 11551 latter part of May in the present year. I was wandering about, in a lazy sort of manner, through the narrow, irregular streets of an Old German town, which I had reached on an extensive bicycle tour. I meant to lose myself, and I had done so. The surroundings were totally strange and unfamiliar to me, and I had no definite idea of the way I had come or of the direction I must take to return to my lodgings.2 spanish castles BY the rhine. Book excerpt: A Castle in Spain A Novel by James De Mille The train for the North was about to start from Madrid, and the station was filled with the usual varied and bustling crowd. Throngs of soldiers were there; throngs of priests; throngs of civilians; throngs of peasants; all moving to and fro, intermingled with the railway employés, and showing the power of steam to stir up even the lazy Spaniard to unwonted punctuality and portentous activity. In the midst of this busy scene two men stood apart, each by himself, with eyes fixed upon the entrance, as though expecting some one whose advent was of no ordinary importance. One of these was an unmistakable Spaniard, of medium size, dark complexion, penetrating black eyes, and sombre countenance. His dress was that of a civilian, but his bearing was military, and his face and general expression savored of the camp. The other was an Englishman, with all his country beaming in his face, tall in stature, light in complexion, with gray eyes, and open, frank expression. He had a thin mustache, flaxen side whiskers, and no beard. He stood in an easy, nonchalant attitude, with an eye-glass stuck in one eye, and a light cane in his hand, which he switched carelessly upon his leg... Book excerpt: "The Blue Castle" tells the story of a young woman named Valancy Stirling, who lives a dull and uneventful life in the restrictive and judgmental society of the early 20th century. She is unmarried and lives with her overbearing mother and cousin, and has resigned herself to a life of spinsterhood and conformity. However, everything changes when Valancy receives a devastating medical diagnosis that gives her only a year to live. This news acts as a catalyst, prompting Valancy to break free from the constraints placed upon her and start living life on her own terms. She decides to leave her oppressive family environment and embrace her dreams and desires. Valancy's journey takes her to the fictional Blue Castle, a place of love and freedom that exists only in her imagination. In this imagined space, she meets a mysterious man named Barney Snaith, who becomes a symbol of hope and adventure in her life. Through "The Blue Castle," Montgomery explores themes such as self-discovery, the power of imagination, and the importance of living authentically. The novel challenges societal norms and expectations, highlighting the barriers placed on women during the early 20th century. Valancy's transformation from a meek and submissive woman to a vibrant and independent individual is both inspiring and empowering. Montgomery's writing is vivid and evocative, immersing readers in the beauty of the Canadian landscape and the emotions of the characters. Her descriptions of nature and the Blue Castle itself transport readers to a place of enchantment and possibility. The author's knack for creating memorable characters shines through in Valancy's journey, as well as in the supporting cast that includes eccentric family members and quirky townspeople. "The Blue Castle" stands apart from Montgomery's more famous works due to its departure from the author's usual setting of Prince Edward Island. The novel is set in the fictional Muskoka region of Ontario, providing a fresh and captivating backdrop. This change of scenery adds another layer of charm and uniqueness to the story. Overall, "The Blue Castle" is a delightful and heartwarming tale of self-discovery, courage, and love. It portrays the transformative power of embracing one's true desires and finding joy in unexpected places. Montgomery's masterful storytelling and the endearing characters make this a book you won't want to put down.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Castle Gates: A Book Poems; Through Which the Knowing Ones Are Admitted Into Some of My Castles in Spain In order that the reader may better under stand the conditions out of which this volume has grown, it may be worth while to add here a few words in regard to my life-history. I was born on a poor mountain farm near Moravian Falls, N. C., 29 years ago. Worked on the farm until I was 21 years old. Sometimes I got to at tend the district free school a few weeks during the winter. Studied grammar a little, but couldnot make head nor tail of it. Had only a very moderate liking for history and geography, and couldn't endure arithmetic at all. Liked my old Fourth Reader very well, because it had some poetry in it. Spent most of my time during school hours writing poetry on my slate. W'as set down as a hopeless case, whom there was no use trying to educate. Quit school entirely at 16, having never been in school more than 12 months, from first to last. Never saw the inside of a high school or college. Stayed between the plow-handles for several years longer. Read all the poetry I could get hold of, and gradually developed a taste for other kinds of reading. Wrote a poem every little while for some pa per or magazine. The editors were kind, and printed my stuff. Drifted into a local newspaper office. Learned to set type. Edited the paper. Acted as Washington correspondent. Contrib uted poems to various periodicals. Operated a linotype machine in office of city daily. Got married. Set up a print-shop of my own to print my books. That brings us down to the present, and that's as far as I can go with my history just now. Maybe the world will want to know more about me some time, and maybe it won't. We'll wait and see. Respectfully. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
