Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not simply poetry but a collection of works from various times in my life. The book is very revealing as an inward voice of what was occurring at any particular time and place. It expresses the timeless pain from childhood loss to the later coming of age in not the best of circumstances. It's my way of telling a story in snippets of time. These are words of expression from an often colored and sometimes troubled past. It is the authors hope that one can see in the writing that love does win out, and the worst of circumstances can become something thought provoking and meaningful. These are truly pieces of my puzzle in poetry.

Book The Puzzle of Poetry

Download or read book The Puzzle of Poetry written by John Marsh and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puzzle of Poetry offers students a readable, reliable guide to understanding poetry. Instead of carving poems up into their elements, The Puzzle of Poetry describes how experienced readers of poems go about understanding them. Each line, sentence, or syntactical unit in a poem is a clue to the “puzzle.” As with crossword puzzles, figuring out the answer to one clue can help you figure out the answer to others. This book teaches the reader to check what they know in a poem against what else they know to find meaning, a systematic but creative approach that can help language to come alive. Each chapter contains a lively and personal discussion of one part of the art of reading poetry; a short guide to writing about poetry is also included. The book introduces students to a variety of poems, from Anglo-Saxon verse to Hamilton and Jay-Z.

Book Vivas to Those Who Have Failed Poems

Download or read book Vivas to Those Who Have Failed Poems written by Martín Espada and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-01-04 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning poet Martín Espada gives voice to the spirit of endurance in the face of loss. In this powerful new collection of poems, Martín Espada articulates the transcendent vision of another, possible world. He invokes the words of Whitman in “Vivas to Those Who Have Failed,” a cycle of sonnets about the Paterson Silk Strike and the immigrant laborers who envisioned an eight-hour workday. At the heart of this volume is a series of ten poems about the death of the poet’s father. “El Moriviví” uses the metaphor of a plant that grows in Puerto Rico to celebrate the many lives of Frank Espada, community organizer, civil rights activist, and documentary photographer, from a jailhouse in Mississippi to the streets of Brooklyn. The son lyrically imagines his father’s return to a bay in Puerto Rico: “May the water glow blue as a hyacinth in your hands.” Other poems confront collective grief in the wake of the killings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and police violence against people of color: “Heal the Cracks in the Bell of the World” urges us to “melt the bullets into bells.” Yet the poet also revels in the absurd, recalling his dubious career as a Shakespearean “actor,” finding madness and tenderness in the crowd at Fenway Park. In exquisitely wrought images, Espada’s poems show us the faces of Whitman’s “numberless unknown heroes.”

Book Brain Fever Poems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kimiko Hahn
  • Publisher : W. W. Norton & Company
  • Release : 2014-10-06
  • ISBN : 0393243362
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Brain Fever Poems written by Kimiko Hahn and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics and meditations on contemporary neuroscience, a stunning new volume from an essential American poet. Acclaimed as "one of the most fascinating female poets of our time" (BOMB), Kimiko Hahn is a shape-shifter, a poet who seeks novel forms for her utterly original subject matter and "stands as a welcome voice of experimentation and passion" (Bloomsbury Review). In Brain Fever, Hahn integrates the recent findings of science, ancient Japanese aesthetics, and observations from her life as a woman, wife, mother, daughter, and artist. Rooted in meditations on contemporary neuroscience, Brain Fever takes as its subject the mysteries of the human mind—the nature of dreams and memories, the possibly illusory nature of linear time, the complexity of conveying love to a child. In one poem, "A Bowl of Spaghetti," she cites a comparison that researchers draw between unraveling "the millions of miles of wires in the [human] brain" and "untangling a bowl of spaghetti," and thus she untangles a memory of her own: "I have an old photo: Rei in her high chair intently / picking out each strand to mash in her mouth. // Was she two? Was that sailor dress from mother? / Did I cook that sauce from scratch? If so, there was a carrot in the pot." Equally inspired by Sei Shonagon's tenth-century Pillow Book and the latest findings of cognitive research, Brain Fever is a thrilling blend of the timely and the timeless.

Book Poems of a Spiritual Awakening

Download or read book Poems of a Spiritual Awakening written by Anonymous and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems of a Spiritual Awakening offers an intimate look at one poets own spiritual awakening over a period of twenty-seven years, going into and out of recovery. Most critical to this awakening is the all-inclusive universal power of a loving God as He revealed Himself to the author through this inspiring poetry. After many years knowing that change was needed but having no success finding what others had discovered to enable their recoveries, the author began writing poetry to express those innermost feelings. Through these verses, God became an overwhelming presence, awakening the authors innermost emotions and the need to finally begin recovery from addiction. From the pain of acknowledging a troubled past in Boogie Man to the poignancy of Self Love, the author gradually found a way to express deeply buried emotions and fears. This poetry collection was written in less than fifty days, with God providing the path to release and recovery. The Voice I had a voice, I made much noise, I knew just what to do, I yelled in here, I talked out there, the voice within my mind, it drove me very blind. I thought out there, I thought out here, could hardly get some air, and then your voice, that still small sound, just threw me to the ground. It quieted my spirit true and showed me what to do.
