Book excerpt: Lollipop, a lovely white Japanese Spitz, came into our lives when our two sons were in their early teens. He became a member of our family, our furkid. He brought smiles and laughter to our lives every day, and was our good luck charm. He enriched our lives and also made us rich. From the day he entered our home, he was the center of attention. We brought him up the same way as we had brought up our two children, except that this time it was under their scrutiny. We soon realized that we had a brat on hand, but loved all his antics. All his actions looked funny, and we could only laugh at them. Such is the power of canine love. Often our neighbors, more so their children, suddenly became very friendly as soon as they saw him. When our sons moved out, he filled the gap in our lives. He was so close to us that sometimes we believed we could read his mind. His passing away created a void in our lives which will never be filled. “ A Star is Born “ is his story, partly in his own words.

Book Trieglaff

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rudolf von Thadden
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2013-09-01
  • ISBN : 0857459287
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Trieglaff written by Rudolf von Thadden and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of five generations of Thaddens, this book tells the history of Trieglaff, the village and family estate located in what is now western Poland, from Napoleon’s occupation in 1807 to the Red Army’s invasion in 1945 and until the departure of the last Thaddens in 1948. At the center of this history of Trieglaff society, economy, politics, and culture is the von Thadden family, notably, Adolph Ferdinand von Thadden, the head of the pietistic revival in Pomerania, and Reinold von Thadden-Trieglaff, the founder of the German Protestant Kirchentag. It intertwines family history with the political history of Germany through its description of Otto von Bismarck’s close associations with Trieglaff in the 19th century and its deliberation of the execution of Elisabeth von Thadden, arising out of her resistance to the Nazis, in the 20th century. The source material is richly supplemented by family records kept by “Trieglaffers” in America and from correspondence between Pomerania and America. The book examines the lives of individuals as well as socio-economic and cultural structures, depicting the dynamic changes that the village experienced throughout some 150 years of German and European history; it might be called world history in microcosm. As juxtaposition of formal history and remembered history, it is a serious scholarly source as well as an engaging read.

Book The History of Witchcraft in Europe

Download or read book The History of Witchcraft in Europe written by John Ashton and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 4005 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witchcraft in Europe was believed to be a combination of sorcery and heresy. While sorcery attempts to produce negative supernatural effects through formulas and rituals, heresy is the Christian contribution to witchcraft in which an individual makes a pact with the Devil. In addition, heresy denies witches the recognition of important Christian values such as baptism, salvation, Christ and sacraments. In Early Modern European tradition, witches were stereotypically, though not exclusively, women. European pagan belief in witchcraft was associated with the goddess Diana and dismissed as "diabolical fantasies" by medieval Christian authors. Witch-hunts first appeared in large numbers during the 14th and 15th centuries. It was commonly believed that individuals with power and prestige were involved in acts of witchcraft and even cannibalism.
