Book excerpt: 'My Poetry Depicts You' is an anthology of Kurdish contemporary poetry, which is rare in the sense that there have not been many similar attempts before. It contains 126 poems by 18 poets whose work covers over 100-year period. It is a general introduction to the contemporary Kurdish poetry and its unique features, which may not be familiar to English readers. These poems are from different time periods, under various oppressive Iraqi regimes. Most of the poets included were active during the former ruling Baath Party. Three of the writers, Dilshad Meriwani, Mala Ali and Barzan Osman, were executed under the Baath regime. Abubakir Ali was allegedly killed by Kurdish security services, and Irfan Ahmed died under suspicious circumstances whilst in Kurdish detention. For the remainder, with the exception of three, all the other poets fled for international protection as a consequence of their work.I have listed the poets in this anthology below, starting with two poems by Nali (1797-1869) to provide a flavour of classical Kurdish poetry, which may not be as familiar to English readers. Nali - 2 poems Abdullah Goran - 2 poemsAhmed Hardi - 1 poem Yunis Rauf Dildar - 1 poemKamaran Mukri - 4 poemsAbdullah Pashew - 41 poemsSherko Bekas - 7 poemsDilshad Meriwani - 11 poemsRafiq Sabir - 14 poemsGoran Meriwani - 13 poemsMohammed Omar Osman - 5 poemsVenus Fiaq - 2 poems Dilsoz Hama - 2 poems Barzan Osman - 1 poemEsmayil Mohammed - 5 poems Hussein Maulud Ahmed, known as Mala Ali - 3 poems Abubakir Ali - 1 poemIrfan Ahmed - 1 poemOn top of these, it includes 10 more poems. An essay that gives insight of the evolution of Kurdish Contemporary School of poetry and its pioneers, chiefly Sheikh Nuri Sheikh Salih (1868 - 1958), Rashid Najib (1906 - 1968), Rafiq Hilmi (1898 - 1960), Abdulrahman Bagi Baban - also known as Abdulrahamn Bagi Nifus, (1878-1967) and Abdullah Goran (1904 - 1962).It is of real interest to any fans of poetry, or of Kurdish and Middle Eastern literature. Book The Math Campers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dan Chiasson
  • Publisher : Knopf
  • Release : 2020-09-22
  • ISBN : 0593317742
  • Pages : 129 pages

Download or read book The Math Campers written by Dan Chiasson and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A father and husband's meditation on love, adolescence, and the mysterious mechanisms of poetic creation, from the acclaimed poet. The poet's art is revealed in stages in this "making-of" book, where we watch as poems take shape--first as dreams or memories, then as drafts, and finally as completed works set loose on the world. In the long poem "Must We Mean What We Say," a woman reader narrates in prose the circumstances behind poems and snippets of poems she receives in letters from a stranger. Who made up whom? Chiasson, an acclaimed poetry critic, has invented a remarkable structure where the reader and a poet speak to one another, across the void of silence and mystery. He is also the father of teenaged sons, and this volume continues the autobiographical arc of his prior, celebrated volumes. One long section is about the age of thirteen and the dawning of desire, while the title poem looks at the crucial age of fifteen and the existential threat of climate change and gun violence, which alters the calculus of adolescence. Though the outlook is bleak, these poems register the glories of our moment: that there are places where boys can kiss each other and not be afraid; that small communities are rousing and taking care of each other; that teenagers have mobilized for a better world. All of these works emerge from the secretive imagination of a father as he measures his own adolescence against that of his sons and explores the complex bedrock of marriage. Chiasson sees a perilous world both navigated and enriched by the passionate young and by the parents--and poets--who care for them.

Book Trouvailles My Moments of Yugen

Download or read book Trouvailles My Moments of Yugen written by Shuvashree Chowdhury and published by Cinnamonteal Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trouvaille (origin French) means a chance encounter with something wonderful, a windfall, a lucky find. Whether it's stumbling across a hidden back street, discovering a quaint cafe, or connecting with a local during a journey-the joy they bring is what you call trouvaille. Yūgen (origin Japanese) is a profound and mysterious sense of the beauty of the universe and the sad beauty of human suffering-an awareness that triggers emotional responses too deep and powerful for words. Trouvailles: My Moments of Yūgen is Shuvashree Chowdhury's second collection of poems. They are crafted from the physical and mental journeys she undertook to find herself. One moment she is navigating the ghats and galis of the holy city of Banaras; in another she is gazing at the mighty Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling and Kalimpong; one moment she is experiencing the calm of Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan; in another she is walking along the Hooghly in pastoral Bengal. Then there is travel- in the form of contemplation-undertaken during the Covid-forced lockdown. The poems are not so much about the destinations, but a fresh way of looking at places we already knew about. They are an optimistic and positive reflection on life and death; love and relationships; rejection and resilience.

Book excerpt: A mix of experiences that you will feel, emotions to make you smile, cry, laugh, and sometimes, weep. Who knows where my poems may take you or what emotions you will feel. The Journey has just begun and will venture through the many unpublished poems yet to come. Some will make you think in thought-provoking ways, others will astound you with the twists. Other poems will make you relate to the experiences you may have had or felt in situations of your life. So the journey begins. This book I wrote for children of all ages from 9 to 99. I hope they are deemed suitable for those who read it. Obviously there has to be some parent guidance for those who are at a very young age. There's a whole range of different experiences that I guess most people will and can be able tolerate to, my sense of humor can sometimes get me into all sorts of trouble and I guess that's why I see the funny side of life. The way I see it is that life can throw an awful lot of trials and tribulations any given time, and let's face it I have had my share of them. Any way kids please enjoy what I have written, and parents if you feel any of the poems are unsuitable please don't read them to the children. The Poems are mainly for older children and teenagers, I hope they make you all understand and maybe smile. Many thanks Terry.

Dr Margaret Martin, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand "Reflection, as a process of critical self-evaluation, continues to grow and be recognised as a successful, approach to improving, changing and managing healthcare practice. This latest text by Taylor is a welcome addition to the increasing body of knowledge on the subject. Highlighting the importance of ordinary human communication for all healthcare professionals, Taylor's text and presence is anything but ordinary." Professor Dawn Freshwater, University of Leeds, UK "This book is about more than reflection, it is about a philosophy of nursing that Taylor has espoused throughout her career, and it makes a connection with the reader in a way that many books do not. This is a must-have book for all who wish to move their practice forwards." Joanne Pike, Senior Lecturer, NEWI, North Wales This popular book provides practical guidance for healthcare professionals wishing to reflect on their work and improve the way they undertake clinical procedures, interact with other people at work and deal with power issues. The book contains a clear and comprehensive description of: The fundamentals of reflective practice and how and why it is embraced in healthcare professions Strategies for effective reflection Systematic approaches to technical, practical and emancipatory reflection A step-by-step guide to applying the Taylor REFLECT model This edition also introduces the concept of 'ordinariness' in health care, which used consciously with the reflective practice processes in this book should increase the likelihood that patients receiving healthcare will feel acknowledged, heard and comforted as intelligent human beings.

Book You Are My Joy and Pain

  • ISBN : 0814348025
  • Pages : 75 pages

Download or read book You Are My Joy and Pain written by Naomi Long Madgett and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You Are My Joy and Pain is Naomi Long Madgett’s latest and possibly most endearing poetry collection. Bill Harris, a 2011 Kresge Foundation Eminent Artist, said of the book, "Even with the evidence of over a half-century or more of first-rate poetic artistry by Madgett, this collection is a breath-arresting surprise and delight. Poem-by-poem and section-by-section amaze. Each poem in the collection is a master class in technique and in her ability to transpose an idea into a tightly composed example of the craft of poetry." You Are My Joy and Pain receives its name from the Billie Holiday song "Don’t Explain" and is divided into three parts. The first part, "A Promise of Sun," contains fourteen poems relating to the hopeful and joyful beginning of a new relationship. The second part, "Trinity: A Dream Sequence," consists of twenty poems with religious imagery and encompasses both the beginning and the end of a relationship. The third part, "Stormy Weather," includes thirty-two poems that relate to the heartbreaking experience of a love gone wrong. These are not love poems in the abstract—the richness with which Madgett writes hints at the firsthand experience of a lifetime of loving. While several anthologies of love poems exist in the world, it is rare to find a single-author collection that so closely examines love in all of its messy and beautiful layers. Readers will identify with the hope and disappointment that Madgett presents in these poems.

Book A Summer Day in the Company of Ghosts

Download or read book A Summer Day in the Company of Ghosts written by Wang Yin and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, bilingual collection of poetry by a pioneering, multi-talented Chinese writer and photographer in a landmark English translation. “My poems are flecks of salt clinging ambivalently to a horse’s back,” Wang Yin writes. This is the first comprehensive collection of this important Chinese poet’s work to appear in English, translated by Andrea Lingenfelter. Readers can follow the full arc of his career, from the early, surrealist, and Deep Image–influenced work of the 1980s, when he made his debut as a post-Misty poet, through the turn toward the rawer, more immediate poetry of the nineties, and on to the existential and ineffable weavings of his more recent work. Wang’s sensibility is both cosmopolitan and lyrical, and his poetry has a subtlety and beauty that contrasts with the often physically painful imagery with which he depicts psychological reality, a reality expressed as various states of mind struggling against the suppression of memory. Shanghai winters, a winter in Katowice, a summer day with ghosts, blue shadows, petals in the darkness, an “empty lane lit up by moonlight”—the poems of this extraordinary volume illuminate the inner life as a singular encounter between physical and spiritual realms.

Book Martyrdom Mysticism and Dissent

Download or read book Martyrdom Mysticism and Dissent written by Asghar Seyed-Gohrab and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first extensive research on the role of poetry during the Iranian Revolution (1979) and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). How can poetry, especially peaceful medieval Sufi poems, be applied to exalt violence, to present death as martyrdom, and to process war traumas? Examining poetry by both Islamic revolutionary and established dissident poets, it demonstrates how poetry spurs people to action, even leading them to sacrifice their lives. The book's originality lies in fresh analyses of how themes such as martyrdom and violence, and mystical themes such as love and wine, are integrated in a vehemently political context, while showing how Shiite ritual such as the pilgrimage to Mecca clash with Saudi Wahhabi appreciations. A distinguishing quality of the book is its examination of how martyrdom was instilled in the minds of Iranians through poetry, employing Sufi themes, motifs and doctrines to justify death. Such inculcation proved effective in mobilising people to the front, ready to sacrifice their lives. As such, the book is a must for readers interested in Iranian culture and history, in Sufi poetry, in martyrdom and war poetry. Those involved with Middle Eastern Studies, Iranian Studies, Literary Studies, Political Philosophy and Religious Studies will benefit from this book. "From his own memories and expert research, the author gives us a ravishing account of 'a poetry stained with blood, violence and death'. His brilliantly layered analysis of modern Persian poetry shows how it integrates political and religious ideology and motivational propaganda with age-old mystical themes for the most traumatic of times for Iran." (Alan Williams, Research Professor of Iranian Studies, University of Manchester) "When Asghar Seyed Gohrab, a highly prolific academician, publishes a new book, you can be certain he has paid attention to an exciting and largely unexplored subject. Martyrdom, Mysticism and Dissent: The Poetry of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) is no exception in the sense that he combines a few different cultural, religious, mystic, and political aspects of Iranian life to present a vivid picture and thorough analysis of the development and effect of what became known as the revolutionary poetry of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This time, he has even enriched his narrative by inserting his voice into his analysis. It is a thoughtful book and a fantastic read." (Professor Kamran Talattof, University of Arizona)
