Book excerpt: Six supernatural besties fighting their fates in NYC: A witch whose spells misfire, a wizard who keeps falling for the wrong species, a vampire who longs to be adored, a dragon shifter who can’t shift, a werewolf without a pack, and a demon-spawn bent on being good… Minerva Lucent has always wanted to be just like her late father: a guardian, defender of NYC from the demonic threat. She’s spent her whole life trying to secure a spot, but so far, she’s still stuck as a magical beat cop. It’s not that she hates cleaning up after the boozy vampires and miscreant werewolves. It’s just not inspiring. But when the guardian she’s crushed on for years spills about a rare opening on their force, she resolves to do anything she can to snag it for herself. If that means she has to rally her friends and do something a little crazy, well. She’s prepared to do anything. Including blowing all her savings on an exotic fire lizard egg she hopes to bond. As usual, her plans misfire in a big way, and she winds up bonding a flying rat—the last creature anyone in NYC would ever want as a familiar. What’s worse, Giggles the pigeon won’t stay in her cage. When Minerva’s bestie from high school shows up in dire straits, a choice must be made. Will she secure her promotion or save her friend from an unwanted marriage? Publisher's Weekly said My Pigeon Familiar is, "a delightful, character-driven fantasy novel about a group of supernatural friends helping to prevent an unwanted wedding, and it will no doubt bewitch readers with its entrancing plot and relatable cast." This book was previously published as Mates: Minerva. If you are one of my superfans who bought it under that title, don't re-purchase it. It's exactly the same book, but hopefully with a better blurb and title/cover. ;) KW: fantasy comedy; humorous fantasy; comedic fantasy; funny fantasy; lighthearted fantasy; romantic comedy fantasy; urban fantasy; contemporary fantasy; supernatural suspense; cozy; clean fantasy; fantasy romance; magical misfits; supernatural friends; found family; fitting in; NYC; werewolf shifter; vampire; witch; wizard; dragon shifter; demon spawn; paranormal fantasy; paranormal romance; magical cop; familiars; magical realism. Book Homing

Download or read book Homing written by Jon Day and published by John Murray. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SPECTATOR BOOK OF THE YEAR Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 'Rich and joyous ...The book's quiet optimism about our ability to change, and to learn to love small things passionately, will stay with me for a long time' Helen Macdonald 'Big-hearted and quietly gripping' Guardian 'I love Jon Day's writing and his birds. A marvellous, soaring account' Olivia Laing '[A] beautiful book about unbeautiful birds' Observer 'This is nature writing at its best' Financial Times 'Awash with historical and literary detail, and moving moments ... Wonderful' Telegraph 'Every page of this beautifully written book brought me pleasure' Charlotte Higgins 'A vivid evocation of a remarkable species and a rich working-class tradition. It's also a charming defence of a much-maligned bird, which will make any reader look at our cooing, waddling, junk-food-loving feathered friends very differently in future' Daily Mail 'Endlessly interesting and dazzlingly erudite, this wonderful book will make a home for itself in your heart' Prospect As a boy, Jon Day was fascinated by pigeons, which he used to rescue from the streets of London. Twenty years later he moved away from the city centre to the suburbs to start a family. But in moving house, he began to lose a sense of what it meant to feel at home. Returning to his childhood obsession with the birds, he built a coop in his garden and joined a local pigeon racing club. Over the next few years, as he made a home with his young family in Leyton, he learned to train and race his pigeons, hoping that they might teach him to feel homed. Having lived closely with humans for tens of thousands of years, pigeons have become powerful symbols of peace and domesticity. But they are also much-maligned, and nowadays most people think of these birds, if they do so at all, as vermin. A book about the overlooked beauty of this species, and about what it means to dwell, Homing delves into the curious world of pigeon fancying, explores the scientific mysteries of animal homing, and traces the cultural, political and philosophical meanings of home. It is a book about the making of home and making for home: a book about why we return.

Book Too Many Bird Books

Download or read book Too Many Bird Books written by Geoffrey Dabb and published by Australian Self Publishing Group. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a chronicle of encounters with a lot of bird books, in fact a lifetime of such encounters. The world of bird books is vast and varied, defying coherent description. The author’s qualification for making this attempt to describe it is that he owns several hundred of them, gathered over more than 70 years. To help make sense of this obsession, the describing of the books is linked to a life in which traditional birdwatching (and book hunting) went on, in different places, and in between other things.

Download or read book Homing with the Birds written by Gene Stratton-Porter and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Homing with the Birds" is a book in which one comes into intimate contact with one's feathered friends, to the extent of feeling that they actually have personalities! This is doubtless because Mrs. Porter is a true and devoted friend to them herself, and has been so since her childhood. She says: "Almost my first distinct memory is connected with a bird." and then proceeds to tell how this was upon an occasion when she was willing to deny herself the joy of eating cherries in order that woodpeckers in the neighborhood might not be killed! Many such incidents of the author's childhood are in the book, demonstrating her intense, almost romantic, attachment to the feathered tribes. The book is more than a record of bird life, it is that of a charming young, growing human life deeply concerned with the things of nature. At the same time it is full of information not only delightful but useful for birdlovers and students of natural history and outdoor matters.

  • Author : Meir Shalev
  • Publisher : Schocken

Download or read book A Pigeon and a Boy written by Meir Shalev and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mesmerizing novel of two love stories, separated by half a century but connected by one enchanting act of devotion—from the internationally acclaimed Israeli writer Meir Shalev. During the 1948 War of Independence—a time when pigeons are still used to deliver battlefield messages—a gifted young pigeon handler is mortally wounded. In the moments before his death, he dispatches one last pigeon. The bird is carrying his extraordinary gift to the girl he has loved since adolescence. Intertwined with this story is the contemporary tale of Yair Mendelsohn, who has his own legacy from the 1948 war. Yair is a tour guide specializing in bird-watching trips who, in middle age, falls in love again with a childhood girlfriend. His growing passion for her, along with a gift from his mother on her deathbed, becomes the key to a life he thought no longer possible. Unforgettable in both its particulars and its sweep, A Pigeon and A Boy is a tale of lovers then and now—of how deeply we love, of what home is, and why we, like pigeons trained to fly in one direction only, must eventually return to it. In a voice that is at once playful, wise, and altogether beguiling, Meir Shalev tells a story as universal as war and as intimate as a winged declaration of love.

Download or read book A Message from Martha written by Mark Avery and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Passenger Pigeon, and what we can learn from its demise 100 years ago. September 1st, 2014 marked the centenary of one of the best-documented extinctions in history – the demise of the Passenger Pigeon. From being the commonest bird on the planet 50 years earlier, the species became extinct on that fateful day, with the death in Cincinnati Zoo of Martha – the last of her kind. This book tells the tale of the Passenger Pigeon, and of Martha, and of author Mark Avery's journey in search of them. It looks at how the species was a cornerstone of the now much-diminished ecology of the eastern United States, and how the species went from a population that numbered in the billions to nil in a terrifyingly brief period of time. It also explores the largely untold story of the ecological annihilation of this part of America in the latter half of the 19th century, a time that saw an unprecedented loss of natural beauty and richness as forests were felled and the prairies were ploughed, with wildlife slaughtered more or less indiscriminately. Despite the underlying theme of loss, this book is more than another depressing tale of human greed and ecological stupidity. It contains an underlying message – that we need to re-forge our relationship with the natural world on which we depend, and plan a more sustainable future. Otherwise more species will go the way of the Passenger Pigeon. We should listen to the message from Martha.
