Book excerpt: I am Sargon, Captain of the Antares, whom the prophet at my birth named the Even-Star of the House of the Descending Falcon, and the rising Morning Star of his people. What a confusing name to give to a small child. Now that I am at the end of my days, I think I can finally decipher the contradiction. I was heralded as the hope of the Astari, my people. The soothsayer told my great-grandfather, the last hope. This was the reason for the name Even-star. But, it was not to be. I'm also the last heir to the throne of Istranavu, my world. The assassination of the Emperor and my banishment was apparently the death-knell of my people. The Antares, my second home, will soon translate into the arms of Incal, the sun of my world. I have chosen death than have this ship used for their foul play, I will destroy the Antares. This is the end, the end of the joy and sorrows of a life I never in my wildest dreams could have envisioned. I was born two hundred years ago into the House of the Descending Falcon. My family was ancient even by the standards of my world. Both my parents were scientists. I think I inherited my inquisitiveness from them. Sirtis, my mother, was the granddaughter of the emperor which placed me high on the social and political ladder. When a civilization becomes ancient, it has the tendency to look back to a golden age. Everything hoary acquires a golden glow as Sabrina would have said. But there, I'm getting ahead of myself, so, I'd better start at the beginning.

Book excerpt: The Odyssey, translated by T. E. Lawrence, an epic 12,000-line poem composed over 2,700 years ago, is the first adventure story in Western literature. It describes the ten-year wanderings of Odysseus in his quest to return home after the Trojan War. Hounded by the sea-god Poseidon and championed by the goddess Athene, he encounters giants, sorceresses, and sea monsters before finally reaching his beloved Ithaca. There he must endure the taunts of the Suitors to his queen, Penelope, who have taken up residence in his palace. At once enchanting fairy tale and gripping drama, the Odyssey is eminently readable, not least for the rich complexity and magnetism of its hero. An inspiration to writers as diverse as Virgil, Swift, and Joyce, the Odyssey has proved enormously influential and continues to captivate readers of all ages.

Book excerpt: This collection includes both of the greatest Greek stories ever told and numbers amongst the most important works of Western literature. "The Illiad" is Homer's legendary account of the Trojan War, an epic battle that took place over three thousand years ago and had a significant impact on world history. "The Odyssey" follows the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca and his voyage back home following the cessation of the Trojan War. Translated into English prose by Samuel Butler and including several essays and writings on both Homer and the Epics, this book is a must have for any lovers of history and literature and would make a perfect addition to any book shelf. Homer was the author of the two epic poems upon which the works of ancient Greek literature are predicated, the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey”. Though Homer is regarded as being among the greatest and most influential writers of all time, the question of when, where and by whom the “Illiad” and “Odyssey” were written remains unanswered—although most scholars agree that they were both written around the late eighth or early seventh century BC. For thousands of years the influence of the Homeric epic has had on Western civilization has been significant, having inspired a large number of its most famous works of art, literature, and film.
