Book excerpt: Can someone face evil and without becoming evil itself? This was Leona s biggest dilemma. Mikhaila Naslavatilov (codename Leona) have been training since childhood to fulfill a mission. Her innate special abilities have been put to work by her father, captain Dmitro, an expert in hand-to-hand combat, melee weapons, and guerrilla infiltration techniques, by her mother, Dr. Yara Schreiber, a renowned scholar and researcher of the occult, black magic, vampirism and demonology, and by masters of various arts to make her able to face evil forces of human and demonic nature. To these primary motivations, added an intense hatred against the criminal organization that murdered her father. Her body and mind became, by intense training, a lethal weapon, ready to act instantly against her targets and to destroy them without hesitation. Her training camp was the region of Transylvania, in the Carpathians, where a setting surrounded by mysteries and legends and a hostile nature served as the starting point for a mission that would put her life and soul in constant danger. She knew that, sometimes, when facing evil, we could also turn into the things we fight. To maintain her humanity was her biggest challenge.

Book excerpt: An extraordinary debut novel of love that survives the fires of hell and transcends the boundaries of time. On a burn ward, a man lies between living and dying, so disfigured that no one from his past life would even recognize him. His only comfort comes from imagining various inventive ways to end his misery. Then a woman named Marianne Engel walks into his hospital room, a wild-haired, schizophrenic sculptress on the lam from the psych ward upstairs, who insists that she knows him – that she has known him, in fact, for seven hundred years. She remembers vividly when they met, in another hospital ward at a convent in medieval Germany, when she was a nun and he was a wounded mercenary left to die. If he has forgotten this, he is not to worry: she will prove it to him. And so Marianne Engel begins to tell him their story, carving away his disbelief and slowly drawing him into the orbit and power of a word he'd never uttered: love.

Book The Last Bizarre Tale

Download or read book The Last Bizarre Tale written by David Madden and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2014-08-10 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though he has authored more than eleven novels including, Cassandra Singing, The Suicide’s Wife, Abducted by Circumstance, and the recent London Bridge in Plague and Fire, David Madden has been publishing short stories for all six decades of his active career. The Last Bizarre Tale consists of works that appeared in journals but that have not appeared together as a collection. Madden used two stories, “The Singer” and “Second Look Presents: the Rape of an Indian Brave,” as chapters in his 1980 novel On the Big Wind. “The Headless Girl’s Mother” was first published as a chapter in a serialized novel entitled Hair of the Dog. Two other stories developed out of longer versions of Madden’s novels. “A Demon in My View” is part of a sequel, not yet published, to Bijou. All of the stories in David Madden’s third collection are distinguished by variety of content and by shifting styles and often innovative techniques. They are to varying degrees and in various ways bizarre in their characters and their relationships, in the kinds of internal and external conflicts, and in locales and themes. The title story, The Last Bizarre Tale, involving a corpse that has hung on a hook in a funeral home garage for decades, is evocative of Poe and, in its dark, grotesque humor, Flannery O’Connor and Carson McCullers. “Process is as important as product to David Madden,” writes editor James Perkins, “and one can learn as much about the process of writing as about the human condition by a careful reading of these stories.”
