Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between World War II and Vatican II, as Italy struggled to rebuild after decades of Mussolini’s fascism, an eleventh-century order of contemplative monks in the Apennines were urged by Thomas Merton to found a daughter house on the rugged coast of California. A brilliant but world-weary ex-Jesuit, who had recently withdrawn from a high-intensity public life to go into reclusion at the ancient Sacro Eremo of Camaldoli, was tapped for the job. Based on notes kept for over sixty years by an early American novice at New Camaldoli Hermitage, The Hermits of Big Sur tellsthe compelling story of what unfolds within this small and idealistic community when medievalism must finally come to terms with modernism. It traces the call toward fuga mundi in the young seekers who arrive to try their vocations, only to discover that the monastic life requires much more of them than a bare desire for solitude. And it describes the miraculous transformation that sometimes occurs in individual monks after decades of lectio divina, silent meditation, liturgical faithfulness, and the communal bonds they have formed through the practice of the “privilege of love.”

Book Dreaming in Color

Download or read book Dreaming in Color written by Kaffe Fassett and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir, the renowned visual artist chronicles his life and career, as well as what is important to him and what inspires his art. Kaffe Fassett has led an extraordinary life and is a captivating storyteller with a vivid memory. Born in 1937, he spent much of his youth in Big Sur, California, where his parents bought a cabin from Orson Welles and transformed it into the world-famous Nepenthe restaurant, a gathering place for artists and bohemians. After attending a boarding school run by the disciples of Krishnamurti, an Indian guru, he studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, then traveled to England, where he made his home. After an inspiring trip to Inverness, Scotland, Fassett began designing knitwear for Bill Gibb, and then the Missonis, Vogue magazine, and private clients like Lauren Bacall and Barbra Streisand, and, in the process, revolutionized the handknitting world with his explosive use of color. Further explorations led him to needlepoint, mosaics, rugmaking, tapestries, yarn and fabric design, costume and set design, and quilting. Now in his seventies, Fassett continues to produce new work and to travel worldwide to teach and lecture. In this intimate autobiography, Fassett shares rich, detailed stories about his lifelong creative journey as well as hundreds of glorious photos taken along the way. Praise for Dreaming in Color “Lavishly illustrated with photographs from his life and work and dishing on everyone from Dustin Hoffman to Princess Margaret, Dreaming in Color describes a charmed life filled with creativity, big personalities, travels, and not a little serendipity.” —Vogue Knitting “A feast for the eyes.” —Shelf-Awareness “[Fassett] is a legend in the knitting world for his exquisitely colorful, highly patterned designs. . . . Kaffe Fassett is to color what Julia Child was to French cooking.” —Knitter’s Review

Not only is she not particularly fond of the sport of golf, Sam has had plenty of reasons to stay away from her hometown for the past dozen years. As she tours the scenic locales of Carmel Valley, Big Sur, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach, Sam ends up unearthing a cold case involving the disappearance of the previous editor of Carmel Today. Dangerously in over her head, Sam knows she will have to call on some friends—including the detective she met on her previous assignment to Maui—to solve the suspicious incident and come out alive. Will the unexpected puzzle help her gain a new appreciation for her hometown or will the Monterey area be the last place Sam ever sees? But all that changes when he goes to an Undead Anonymous meeting and finds kindred souls in Rita, an impossibly sexy recent suicide with a taste for the formaldehyde in cosmetic products, and Jerry, a twenty-one-year-old car-crash victim with an exposed brain and a penchant for Renaissance pornography. When the group meets a rogue zombie who teaches them the joys of human flesh, things start to get messy, and Andy embarks on a journey of self-discovery that will take him from his casket to the SPCA to a media-driven class-action lawsuit on behalf of the rights of zombies everywhere. Darkly funny, surprisingly touching, and gory enough to satisfy even the most discerning reader, Breathers is a romantic zombie comedy (rom-zom-com, for short) that will leave you laughing, squirming, and clamoring for more.

Book Escape Emeralda

Download or read book Escape Emeralda written by Bill H. Ritchie and published by Ritchie's Perfect Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My life, from my birthday to the last decade of 1900s, is a spectrum of events both good and bad as I follow T. S. Elliot’s lines, “We shall not cease from exploration, And the end of all our exploring, Will be to arrive where we started, And know the place for the first time.” Growing up on my father’s farm, there was plenty of exploration, but I never went back to the farm. Far from it! My explorations took me where no teacher in my main field, which is printmaking, had gone because I was hired at 24 by a major research university where its campus services gave me a head start exploring electronic arts and computers, I could blend with teaching printmaking. Ironically, while these brought opportunities, there were hidden limitations. In the 1980s I gambled our home to take us on a vast sabbatical research project for the university. We returned to find the school corrupt, and so it ended my career. Fortunately, I married well. My high school sweetheart, Lynda, stayed with me even on my wayward ventures. In addition she brought two fine daughters to our lives. And had it not been for her ability to restore our property, my exploring would have ended forever. Because, when the art school closed its door, others opened. Everything I learned in nineteen years at the UW prepared me to continue privately. By 1990, I was on cloud nine and the Internet was within my grasp. These are the words from one of two volumes I illustrated with a thousand pictures. What autobiography of a teaching artist’s life would be complete without pictures? Not only my art, but my students’, and from collaborations with diverse artists, crafts people, designers, and writers. Plus QR codes! It is for anyone who loves a good read about teaching art as I was known for in Seattle, but also about an old professor’s family, friends, art patrons, and former students who made it possible. It continues in Volume 2. Volume 1 takes this farmboy to the approach of the information superhighway.

We will learn about his new career paths and his work on the Deam Wilderness Project and his fight for landowners private property rights. It is the story of three generations of Latina women coming to terms with addictive behaviors, dysfunctional traits, and the representational similarities of being fatherless daughters. Rebecca M. Elizondo writes from the heart with an optimistic sarcasm; Alma, the grandmother, an uncompromising 89-year-old woman battling the final stages of Alzheimer’s who aims to make sure her tribe is taken care of after she dies. Esperanza, a carefree, optimistic force, also known as Hope, has diligently journaled her whole life including the struggles of caring for her and realizing her daughter will soon leave the nest. Gabriella, an outspoken, jovial young woman who brings laughter into everyday life must decide whether to begin a new start on a great opportunity as a journalist. From the time Hope was a child, Mother's Day was celebrated at the family beach house. In reminiscence, Alma recalls the days when she was raised in Mazatlán, Mexico, before immigrating with her five sons to the United States. Trying to reconcile what she believes about love her whole life with what she doesn’t know about why family secrets exist. Keeping this balance is essential for Hope when she navigates the inevitable of her mom’s illness and letting her daughter go simultaneously. A realization that they are all in this together will ultimately ensure the pain of the past and future. The turbulent cycle of inherited traits and life complications is dismantled when Rebecca depicts a family of women whose bond is impenetrable and is battling Alzheimer’s. It is through her work she has bridged the old and new, allowing a better understanding of what it means to be a Mexican woman, which is to confront adversity with strength and dignity.
