Book Mema s House Mexico City

Download or read book Mema s House Mexico City written by Annick Prieur and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mema's house is in the poor barrio Nezahualcoyotl, a crowded urban space on the outskirts of Mexico City where people survive with the help of family, neighbors, and friends. This house is a sanctuary for a group of young, homosexual men who meet to do what they can't do openly at home. They chat, flirt, listen to music, and smoke marijuana. Among the group are sex workers and transvestites with high heels, short skirts, heavy make-up, and voluminous hairstyles; and their partners, young, bisexual men, wearing T-shirts and worn jeans, short hair, and maybe a mustache. Mema, an AIDS educator and the leader of this gang of homosexual men, invited Annick Prieur, a European sociologist, to meet the community and to conduct her fieldwork at his house. Prieur lived there for six months between 1988 and 1991, and she has kept in touch for more than eight years. As Prieur follows the transvestites in their daily activities—at their work as prostitutes or as hairdressers, at night having fun in the streets and in discos—on visits with their families and even in prisons, a fascinating story unfolds of love, violence, and deceit. She analyzes the complicated relations between the effeminate homosexuals, most of them transvestites, and their partners, the masculine-looking bisexual men, ultimately asking why these particular gender constructions exist in the Mexican working classes and how they can be so widespread in a male-dominated society—the very society from which the term machismo stems. Expertly weaving empirical research with theory, Prieur presents new analytical angles on several concepts: family, class, domination, the role of the body, and the production of differences among men. A riveting account of heroes and moral dilemmas, community gossip and intrigue, Mema's House, Mexico's City offers a rich story of a hitherto unfamiliar culture and lifestyle.

Book excerpt: All loss is difficult, but death by suicide is a traumatic loss that brings with it more than just grief. Suicide leaves the surviving family members and friends with unfounded feelings of guilt and shame, questions that can never be answered, and regrets that make accepting the death almost impossible. When my husband took his own life in 2009, my life spiraled out of control for a time. I struggled to understand what had happened, why it happened, and, most of all, why I didnt see it coming. I blamed myself and for a time wanted to give up and die. Living and dealing with the events surrounding his death were just too difficult and painful. I questioned everybody and everything in my lifeincluding God. In time, with the help of family members, friends, counselors, pastors, and prayer, I found my way out of the depths of my despair. I gradually began to put my life back together againslowly but surely, one piece at the time. My life is drastically different now from what I imagined it would be when I first married. Ive had to accept changes that were forced on me, but Ive tried to make the best of those changes and use them in a positive way. I began writing a blog two years after my husbands death as a means of therapy for myself. I never dreamed it would turn into something that would help others as well. After keeping my blog going for two years, I decided to pursue turning it into a book. Life Goes On: Picking Up the Pieces After a Loved Ones Suicide is the result of my personal experience and is told straight from the heart with total honesty.

Book excerpt: Sparky's story shines the spotlight on crimes against American children that were sanctioned on a national scale by the United States government. At the age of six in 1955, she was sold by her parents to the Sex Magick cult run by the CIA under its illegal program of secret experimentation on mind control called Monarch. By the time she was ten, she'd been purposely split into multiple identities, each one associated with a different age and place as her family moved around the country to avoid Child Protective Services and the police. With each new identity, she forgot the last one. In Imperial Beach, California, inside a tough neighborhood of gangs and brothels abutting the Tijuana Sewer and the Mexican border, she discovered her own courage in the determined persona of a new character, Sparky MacGregor. As she grew older, Sparky's memory faded as she was moved from one location to the next. At the age of seventeen, she escaped from a camp in Big Sur, and left childhood behind. She became a physician, raised a family and moved to Moscow where she founded and ran an underground railroad for child sex trafficking victims from the former USSR. Years later, she returned to Imperial Beach to speak at an international conference on border security. The memory of her lost childhood suddenly returned.

Book What in the World Are You Doing with Cancer

Download or read book What in the World Are You Doing with Cancer written by Hannah McGinnis and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer? Dont only old people and little kids get cancer? How on earth did I get cancer? Thats what Hannah McGinnis thought when she found out she had Hodgkins lymphoma as a twenty-one-year-old college senior. She didnt qualify for aid, wigs, or wish-fulfillment programs like children under eighteen, but she didnt feel old enough to be lumped in with middle-aged women and men fighting cancer. She found herself in the prime of life, battling a formidable disease without warning and without resources for her situation in life. In What in the World Are You Doing with Cancer?, McGinnis walks through her journey with the disease, from her diagnosis to the final treatment and her later reflections. She reveals her thoughts, fears, joys, and struggles with a touch of sarcasm along the way. Ultimately, though the diagnosis was both surreal and frightening, she found hope, a deeper purpose, and a faithful God. McGinnis encourages uswhether we have cancer or notto remember that God is sovereign, to finish strong, and to find the eternal perspective in whatever unexpected trials we may face.
