Book excerpt: Porter was happy. There was nothing better than play time. He loved going to the park with his Mom on sunny afternoons. When he was at the park he got to run around and play with other children. Porter was a dwarf. At ten years old he stood only two feet tall. His mom, who stood at three feet and nine inches tall told him that he was taller than his father had been at his age. Whenever she said that it didn't make him feel all that much better. He just wanted to be a normal sized boy. He spent his free time wishing that he would suddenly grow. Life wasn't fair to a short person. He couldn't reach anything. Nothing in the entire world was set up to serve someone of his size. He couldn't go to the bathroom in public because the toilets were too tall and wide for him, even if he managed to make his way onto the seat he would promptly fall in. Whenever he went into stores he couldn't reach higher than the second shelf. His all-time favourite food was gummy bears but the grocery store his mom took him to had the gummy bears stored on the top shelf.

Download or read book Lessons of War written by James Marten and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While information regarding children and their outlook on the war is not abun-dant, James Marten, through extensive research, has uncovered essays, editorials, articles, poems, games, short stories and letters that tell the story of the Civil War through the eyes of children. Lessons of War: The Civil War in Children's Magazines is a collection of such items, gathered from popular children's magazines that were published during this era. The selections in Lessons of War demonstrate the depth of children's involve-ment in the war, from raising funds for soldiers to incorporating the war into their play activities and eagerly accepting northern political attitudes. The era's leading children's magazines, such as The Little Pilgrim, The Little Corporal, and Student and Schoolmate, used first-person accounts to let the children of the Civil War tell their own stories. Marten's commentary illuminates the vision of the Union war effort presented to children as the nation waged war against itself. Sure to enlighten both scholars and students, Lessons of War is a valuable addition to courses on the Civil War and American social and cultural history.

Download or read book Little Weirds written by Jenny Slate and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Vanity Fair's Great Quarantine Reads: Step into Jenny Slate's wild imagination in this "magical" (Mindy Kaling), "delicious" (Amy Sedaris), and "poignant" (John Mulaney) New York Times bestseller about love, heartbreak, and being alive -- "this book is something new and wonderful" (George Saunders). You may "know" Jenny Slate from her Netflix special, Stage Fright, as the creator of Marcel the Shell, or as the star of "Obvious Child." But you don't really know Jenny Slate until you get bonked on the head by her absolutely singular writing style. To see the world through Jenny's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility. As she will remind you, we live on an ancient ball that rotates around a bigger ball made up of lights and gasses that are science gasses, not farts (don't be immature). Heartbreak, confusion, and misogyny stalk this blue-green sphere, yes, but it is also a place of wild delight and unconstrained vitality, a place where we can start living as soon as we are born, and we can be born at any time. In her dazzling, impossible-to-categorize debut, Jenny channels the pain and beauty of life in writing so fresh, so new, and so burstingly alive, we catch her vision like a fever and bring it back out into the bright day with us, where everything has changed.

Did you know that sage Gargi was the only lady amongst legendary sages who competed for the prize for the greatest sage in the sub-continent? Did you know that Sahadev, the youngest Pandava, had qualities lacking in any of his other, better-known brothers? Did you know that Shakuni is actually a tragic hero? Myth and the Mind is a collection of six short stories about very interesting personalities in Indian mythology. These men and women are all great, and they are all human beings in whom we will all discover a small part of ourselves.
