Shocked by this self-murder, a filmmaker friend feels compelled to understand why Aquin killed himself - and discovers, at the heart of the tragedy, an unforgettable love story. A "documentary fiction" - a category which includes In Cold Blood and The Executioner's Song - HA! is a seminal work that reinvents the audio-visual revolution of the last century. Interweaving photographs, documents, and images with testimony from Aquin's friends and contemporaries, Aquin himself, and the writers and artists who influenced him, this intriguing novel takes the reader on a Joycean tour of a metropolis in the midst of political and cultural turmoil.

Book Marlovian Tragedy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Troni Y. Grande
  • Publisher : Bucknell University Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780838753743
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Marlovian Tragedy written by Troni Y. Grande and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This re-visioning of the Marlowe canon aims to explain the ambiguous effects that readers have long associated with Marlowe's signature. Marlovian tragedy has been inadequately theorized because Marlowe has too often been set under the giant shadow of Shakespeare. Grande, by contrast, takes Marlowe on his own terms and demonstrates how he achieves his notorious moral ambiguity through the rhetorical technique of dilation or amplification. All of Marlowe's plays end in the conventional tragic way, with death. But each play, as well as Hero and Leander, repeatedly evokes the reader's expectations of a tragic end only to defer them, dilating the moment of pleasure so that the protagonists can dally before the "law" of tragedy.

Book The Cambridge Companion to English Renaissance Tragedy

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to English Renaissance Tragedy written by Emma Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring essays by major international scholars, this Companion combines analysis of themes crucial to Renaissance tragedy with the interpretation of canonical and frequently taught texts. Part I introduces key topics, such as religion, revenge, and the family, and discusses modern performance traditions on stage and screen. Bridging this section with Part II is a chapter which engages with Shakespeare. It tackles Shakespeare's generic distinctiveness and how our familiarity with Shakespearean tragedy affects our appreciation of the tragedies of his contemporaries. Individual essays in Part II introduce and contribute to important critical conversations about specific tragedies. Topics include The Revenger's Tragedy and the theatrics of original sin, Arden of Faversham and the preternatural, and The Duchess of Malfi and the erotics of literary form. Providing fresh readings of key texts, the Companion is an essential guide for all students of Renaissance tragedy.

  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Remember Me written by Molly Brogan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molly Brogan wrote Remember Me to make the statement that the US family and domestic violence court system are failing the very families they are designed to protect. Yet Remember Me is more, as the first novel in a trilogy that provides the larger canvas to portray a womanâ??s spiritual journey. Remember Me is the story of a woman whose desperate need to own her soul is confused by her notion that the world around her is the basis of her true experience. In this established duality, love cannot be enough when loss is embedded in pain. Pain obscures the messages of spirit spoken with love by the people around her. Grace becomes fleeting, like a ghost without a home to haunt. And yet the journey is perfect in itself as an unfolding prelude to the elusive possibility coming into reach.

Book A Wakeful Faith

  • Author : J. Marshall Jenkins
  • Publisher : Upper Room Books
  • Release : 2000-02-01

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the harried, expect-the-unexpected flow of everyday life, faith seems far away for many people. Your car breaks down. The bills are due. The kids need school supplies. The business report remains unwritten. In A Wakeful Faith, Jenkins asserts that living awake to God in all of our daily affairs is the answer. Only when we become consciously aware of God's gracious activity in the details of the day can we transform and find purpose in our lives today. "Each day brings a flood of demands for our time and attention," writes Jenkins. "Deep down, many of us feel the pace is killing us, but we do not admit it very often. After all, everyone else seems to get along okay. Something is killing us, but it is not the pace. It is the inattention to our deepest desire, the desire for God." Filled with humor and grounded in scripture, A Wakeful Faith calls us to a refreshed sense of God's presence, which can lead to spiritual well-being in all dimensions of life. Jenkins offers practical suggestions to rouse our spiritual wakefulness and alertness to God in daily living by showing how Jesus trained disciples to perceive the kingdom and to know God. Appropriate for individuals and small groups, A Wakeful Faith contains questions for reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter.
