Book My life in Grand Rapids Michigan

Download or read book My life in Grand Rapids Michigan written by Barbara Jean Palmer and published by Kindle Direct Publishing. This book was released on with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an autobiographical work of Barbara Jean Palmer who has lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, almost her entire life since she was two years old. Her life experiences started when she was under five years old. But it was when she was in her early teens, her formative years, that her experiences began to have a profound impact on her life and destiny. They were formative years for her in a very special way, shaping her personality as the following years also would, validating and solidifying her perceptions and beliefs not only religious but across the economic and sociopolitical spectrum. She was a witness to history and a part of some of the events that shaped Grand Rapids in significant ways through the decades. Her personal experiences also constitute an important part of Grand Rapids history in the sense that they reflect, although from a personal perspective, the cumulative experience of other people with a background similar to hers. Her experiences also reflect some of the events which occurred in a larger context – including national – constituting milestones in the long journey toward understanding and harmony among the people of all racial, cultural, historical and ethnic backgrounds in one of the country's large cities. The work is historical as much as it is autobiographical; it's also contemporary from a local and national perspective because of the fundamental issues it raises and addresses in the quest for a better understanding among all people by focusing on the destiny of the city and of the country as a whole.

We all know people who test our resolve-and our nerves: a tough boss, a gossiping friend, irritating neighbors. So we change "Love one another" to "Be nice" or "Tolerate difficult people." Yet God longs for us to experience a genuine change of heart, as His extravagant love naturally flows through us to others. Book Traveling Mercies

  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Traveling Mercies written by Anne Lamott and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2000-09-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of Bird by Bird comes a personal, wise, very funny, and “life-affirming” book (People) that shows us how to find meaning and hope through shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life. "Anne Lamott is walking proof that a person can be both reverent and irreverent in the same lifetime. Sometimes even in the same breath." —San Francisco Chronicle Lamott claims the two best prayers she knows are: "Help me, help me, help me" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you." She has a friend whose morning prayer each day is "Whatever," and whose evening prayer is "Oh, well." Anne thinks of Jesus as "Casper the friendly savior" and describes God as "one crafty mother." Despite—or because of—her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. The people in Anne Lamott's real life are like beloved characters in a favorite series for her readers—her friend Pammy, her son, Sam, and the many funny and wise folks who attend her church are all familiar. And Traveling Mercies is a welcome return to those lives, as well as an introduction to new companions Lamott treats with the same candor, insight, and tenderness. Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers."

When I took the wrong path, God redirected my path. My Life, My Story, My Way is not all about me but also about others whom God placed in my path to help me build my character. My character is the only thing going to heaven--not what I have done, not how much money I made or what type of house I live in but my character. God gave me a wonderful mother who demonstrated resilience, compassion, hard work, faith, and love for her family, especially me. God blessed me with a wonderful wife who believed in me and encouraged me to do my best and to have the faith that he will see me through. We all have struggles in life, but it is not the struggles we face but how we react to them. My book shows the struggles along my journey and how God was there to pull me through. God gave me all I needed to be successful and live the life he wanted me to live.

They'll also learn the importance of "scripting" their own responses BEFORE challenging life-situations arise so they are able to think about, pray about, and consider how to face these situations before the scene begins. By contrasting real-life with TV or movies, teens will understand they don't have to get caught up in the drama.

Book The Limits of Hospitality

Download or read book The Limits of Hospitality written by Jessica Wrobleski and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practicing hospitality is central to building a civil society, not to mention living a Christian life. It can be enriching and joy-filled, but it can also be profoundly demanding and sometimes even dangerous. In The Limits of Hospitality, Jessica Wrobleski explores the ethical questions surrounding the practice of hospitality, particularly hospitality that is informed by Christian theological commitments. While there is no algorithm that distinguishes between ethically "legitimate: " and "llegitimate" boundaries, the variety of circumstances in which hospitality is relevant and the nature of hospitality itself make advocating firm and fixed boundaries difficult. How much more so for Christians, for whom the practice of hospitality should be a manifestation of agape, a participation in God's eschatological welcome extended to all people through Jesus Christ! Are limits to hospitality, then, merely a regrettable concession to our finite and fallen condition? Wrobleski offers a rich theological reflection that will interest anyone who has a role in the practice of hospitality in community? Whether such communities are families, households, churches, educational institutions, or nation-states.
