  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2019-03-27
  • ISBN : 1623497590
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Fishing Gone written by Sid Dobrin and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have a rapacious relationship with the world’s ocean, extracting immeasurable quantities of its inhabitants and resources, while simultaneously depositing unbound sums of pollution into it. If we are to move toward sustainable practices, then we must first move toward ways of thinking about fish and fisheries beyond mere economic agendas. And there is one group in particular who could make an impact: saltwater anglers. Recreational saltwater fishing is big business and big culture. The industry is one of the largest in the United States, but that has not translated into a cohesive effort, agenda, or ethic. Saltwater anglers, a diverse group with a range of motivations, do not belong to a single organization through which to galvanize significant voting or lobbying power toward conservation regulation. As a result, federal policymakers have traditionally focused on commercial harvesting interests. Dubbed the “most contemplative of pastimes,” recreational fishing provides a valuable perspective on how humans interact with saltwater environments. Fishing, Gone? builds on this tradition of reflection and opens up the saltwater sportfishing life as a method for thinking through the current status of marine fisheries and environment. Author Sid Dobrin calls on fellow saltwater anglers to reconsider their relationship to fishes and the ocean—the sport can no longer be only about the joy and freedom of fishing, but it must also be about living for the ocean, living with the ocean, and living through the ocean. It is about securing the opportunity to fish on while meeting the economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead.

Book Fly Fishing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Schaberg
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2023-01-20
  • ISBN : 1478023996
  • Pages : 67 pages

Download or read book Fly Fishing written by Christopher Schaberg and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fly-Fishing, Christopher Schaberg ponders his lifetime pursuit of the widely mythologized art of fly-fishing. From the Michigan lakeshore where he learned to fish to casting flies in a New Orleans bayou, Schaberg sketches landscapes and fish habitats and shows how fly-fishing allows him to think about coexisting with other species. It offers Schaberg a much-needed source of humility, social isolation, connection with nature, and a reminder of environmental degradation. Rather than centering fishing on trophies, conquest, and travel, he advocates for a “small-fishing” that values catching the diminutive fish near one’s home. Introspective and personal, Fly-Fishing demonstrates how Schaberg’s obsession indelibly shapes how he understands and lives in the wider world.

Book My Life Was This Big

Download or read book My Life Was This Big written by Lefty Kreh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lefty Kreh takes his readers on an angling journey through the last half-century, when water was big and fishermen were bigger (maybe). But, despite all that's changed since the fifties, when Lefty began his career as a professional fly fisherman and writer, fishing is still just fishing. In My Life Was This Big, he relates tales of fishing expeditions with Fidel Castro and Ernest Hemingway, as well as solo battles with some of the scrappiest, most elusive fish in the world. Lefty also takes the reader through the development of his world-famous "Deceiver" fly style, and takes on the issue of conservation through catch-and-release. This is a glimpse into the heart and soul of Lefty Kreh—a man who has written for nearly every outdoor magazine in the U.S.; a man who has fished some of the remotest parts of the globe; and a man whose books and articles have taught thousands of people his techniques for hooking and landing more fish. For fans both young and old, these are Lefty's stories.

Book Fishing for Dreams

Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, veteran fisherman Dennis Reid's beautifully crafted prose and thoughtful approach offer readers an informed and absorbing introduction to some of British Columbia and Alberta 's choicest sports-fishing destinations. From the Rockies to Barkley Sound, from the Columbia River gorge to the Queen Charlotte Islands, the places Reid visits and writes about are known and loved by globe-trotting fishers from all over the world. There are tales of the "ghosts of summer," summer steelhead that are spotted first by their shadows, of winter steelhead on the swung end of a spey cast, of motor-mooching among the boats gathered at northern saltwater rock walls, of the tug-of-war with galloping halibut. Conveying practical information in a lyrical style, Reid offers observations and commentary that will appeal to fans of such authors as Roderick Haig-Brown, Trey Combs, James Babb and Nick Lyons. Contact information for the fishing lodges featured in the essays is included in an appendix, for those who wish to plan trips to these locations.

Book Fishing on the Edge

Download or read book Fishing on the Edge written by Mike Iaconelli and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2005-05-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his colorful tattoos and booming hip-hop sound track, Mike Iaconelli has turned the world of big-money competitive bass fishing upside down. In Fishing on the Edge, Iaconelli tells his own story–and it’s a whopper: a Philly-born, Jersey-bred Yankee who’s been stealing the spotlight from bass fishing’s traditionally all-Southern anglers, attracting fans and dominating one of the fastest-growing sports in America. How did Mike Iaconelli, a college-educated kid from New Jersey, come blasting into a sport dominated by old-school stars like Gary Klein, Kevin VanDam, and Denny Brauer? How did Mike, aka “Ike,” take a secret childhood passion and turn it into a profession, earning million-dollar sponsorships and a storm of media attention, ranging from ESPN’s SportsCenter to profiles in The New York Times and Esquire? While Mike has attracted both fans and foes on the tour, his success speaks for itself, especially his victory at the 2003 CITGO Bassmaster Classic, the Super Bowl of competitive fishing. Forty-four million Americans fish, but no one does it quite like Mike Iaconelli. In Fishing on the Edge, he lets you in on the secrets to his extraordinary success–how he developed his “power” fishing style, how he attacks the water, positions the boat, and perseveres through those days when the bass just aren’t biting. With sidebar tips that can be used by any fisherman–from using spinner baits to picking out the right rod to his no-fail “secret weapons”–this is an intensive, informative, and often raucous journey through the life of a brash young man destined to do for fishing what Tony Hawk did for the X Games: take the sport to a whole new level. At the same time, it’s the compelling first-person story of a man who prepared carefully every step of the way, kept notes on every fish he ever caught, and executed the perfect plan to get to the top. A tale of passion, competition, and extreme personality, Fishing on the Edge is a book for anyone who loves the sport of fishing, wants to turn a hobby into a career, or is simply fascinated by a man’s unstoppable drive to succeed.
