Book My Life in Connaught

Download or read book My Life in Connaught written by Thomas Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life in Connaught: With Sketches of Mission Work in the West Mrs. Armstrong has asked me to write a sentence or two which might serve as a preface to her loving biography of her late husband. What can I say except to comply with such a request, and to thank her that she has put into permanent form a record of thrilling interest? The Rev. Thomas Armstrong was no ordinary man. An Irishman to the finger-tips, his career in the most Irish of the Irish provinces was remarkably picturesque and full of stirring incident. For a generation he stood full-square in the eye of his Church as her missionary and representative in Connaught; and his annual visits to Scotland and England, his ready speech, his versatile character, his overflowing energy and good-humour, besides his intense earnestness in the prosecution of his work, made him known far and wide as a typical Hibernian. The following pages will reveal to a new generation much of what Ireland and Irishmen were in the Victorian era, and the reader may be sure that there is not a dull line in them. Mrs. Armstrong has done well to place this chaplet on a never-to-b-eforgotten grave, and I hope her book will find as many readers as it deserves. Book My Life in Crime and Other Academic Adventures

Download or read book My Life in Crime and Other Academic Adventures written by Martin L. Friedland and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his call to the Bar in 1960, Martin L. Friedland has been involved in a number of important public policy issues, including bail, legal aid, gun control, securities regulation, access to the law, judicial independence and accountability, and national security. My Life in Crime and other Academic Adventures offers a first-hand account of the development of these areas of law from the perspective of a man who was heavily involved in their formation and implementation. It is also the story of a distinguished academic, author, and former dean of law at the University of Toronto. Moving beyond the boundaries of conventional memoir, Friedland offers an extended meditation on public policy issues and significant events in the field of law, discussing their historical impact and predicting the course of their future development. Given his personal experience, there is no other person more suited to discuss these hugely important issues. Friedland puts the law and legal institutions into a wider context, looking at the role of personalities, politics, and pressure groups in the establishment of laws that continue to have tremendous importance for Canadians. My Life in Crime and other Academic Adventures reflects upon a life devoted to education, scholarship, and the law, and is an insider account of public policy issues that have come to shape life in this country in the twentieth century and beyond.

Book My Connaught Cousins Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Connaught Cousins Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint written by Harriett Jay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Connaught Cousins, Vol. 1 of 3 Among the first to recognise the unique power of these stories, their fidelity to human nature, and their predominant dra matic power, was one Of the foremost moral teachers Of this or any time, - Mr Reade. Had they been unveracious, had they been in any sense productions of the inner consciousness, they would never have attracted that most keen-sighted of social Observers; had they lacked sympathy fortheir subject, had they been opposed to what was best in Irish life and character they would never have won his approval. But their veracity is vital and will prevail. Meantime, the reader is to be warned that they contain many things, present many pictures, which the false friends and sum mer lovers of Ireland must naturally re gard with suspicion and dislike. The true friends Of Ireland, and all those who honestly sympathise with the national as pirations, will find in them that truth which genius only can reveal, and which, when once revealed, is fairer than any. "What's in a name? that which we call a rose, Under another name," &c. Y a person of ordinary experience Shakespeare's immortal question is easily answered; but in my simple mind it causes as much thought and perplexity as one embodying the most profound philosophy. For had our shoulders not been burthened with that heavy human incubus, an old family Name, we could have taken the goods the gods provided and been happy. It was our Name, and our Name only, which caused consternation in our family, and constantly interfered with our enjoyment of the pleasures of the world. "O'Mara" does not sound very tremendous, not at all calculated to cause a moral earthquake or a social revolution. Yet beneath that plain and unvarnished surface was hidden an explosive mine which was perhaps unperceived by the common gaze, but the thought of which, alas! weighed so heavily upon our unlucky consciences that we sometimes wished we could escape from its thraldom. We--nay, / was free; and although Kathleen was wont to shake her head and pity my misfortune, I personally clasped my hands in reverent gratitude to my forefathers, through whose mercy I was born an ordinary mortal. I had no honour to support. The good deeds of my forefathers--if they ever did any!--were effectually concealed from the light, and I was allowed to enjoy my life in peace. The only pretension to greatness which I could possibly have was my cousinship to the O'Maras, and this link was so slight as to have little effect upon my character. Kathleen was of a different mould, and born in a different sphere. Her name was her Fetish, as it were; she prized it beyond the common riches of this mortal life, she revered it, honoured it, lived for it, hugged it and kissed it....
