Book American Immigrant

Download or read book American Immigrant written by Rosalie Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration is one of the most contentious issues in twenty-first-century America. In forty years, the American population has doubled from 150 to 300 million, about half of the increase due to immigration. Discussions involving legal and illegal status, assimilation or separatism, and language unity or multilingualism continue to spark debate. The battle to give five million immigrant children America's common language, English, and to help these students join their English-speaking classmates in opportunities for self-fulfillment continues to be argued. American Immigrant is part memoir and part account of Rosalie Pedalino Porter's professional activities as a national authority on immigrant education and bilingualism. Her career began in the 1970s, when she entered the most controversial arena in public education, bilingualism. This book chronicles the political movement Porter helped lead, one that succeeded in changing state laws in California, Arizona, and Massachusetts. Programs that had segregated Latino children by language and ethnicity for years, diminishing their educational opportunities, were removed with overwhelming public support. New English-language programs in these states are reporting improved academic achievement for these students. This book is also Porter's testament to the boundless opportunities for women in the United States, and to the unique blending of ethnicities and religions and races into harmonious families, her own included, that continues to be a true strength of the United States Porter examines women's roles, beginning in the 1940s and continuing through the millennium, from the vantage point of someone who grew up in a working-class, male-dominated family. She explores the emotional price exacted by dislocation from one's native land and traditions; traveling and living in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia; and the evolving character of marriage and family in twenty-first-century America.

Book excerpt: My Immigrant Shoes: Life with Questions, Hope and Gratitude explores the many dimensions of Marcus Wright's life as told through free verse poetry. Wright has chosen to embed questions, commentary, expressions of gratitude, hope and love into narrative poetry, as presented throughout this collection. When he emigrated from Jamaica to America, the experience was not at all what he expected. Even so, the drive not only to survive but to thrive was indomitable; in spite of severe culture shock, he succeeded through hard work, discipline and perseverance. My Immigrant Shoes presents a unique collection of verse that examines his faith and the greater spiritual force from which he has always sought guidance during good times and bad. Prayers to his God have always been answered. When life seemed hopeless in his beautiful homeland of Jamaica, there was no other choice but to explore the unknown and do what he had to--"to improve my life's condition" (from "Immigration Limbo"). This collection recalls discovering love, having and raising children and knowing immediate and extended family--a joyful and nurturing experience.

Book My Life as an Immigrant

Download or read book My Life as an Immigrant written by Kombiz Salehi and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a life story of an immigrant who arrived in the USA as an eighteen-year-old with twelve dollars and has remained in the USA for fifty-eight years. He became an immigrant three years after his arrival and a US citizen five years later. During the next fifty years, he significantly contributed to the American society in more ways than one. He sponsored his entire education and obtained a BS, an MS, an MBA, and a PhD, getting his PhD when he was seventy-four. After the MS degree in Nuclear Engineering, he served the US nuclear power industry as a nuclear engineer, including fifteen years of management position in companies such as GE Company, Bechtel, Exelon (formerly ComEd), Parsons, and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC), retaining security clearance during his tenure at the US NRC. He was a midlevel manager for the GE Company for a decade. As an adjunct professor for eight years, he taught MBA and mathematics to the university students. His contributions extend through his three children in three circles of the American society. One son is in the biomedical field with his current service getting his company to develop the vaccine for the COVID-19 virus. His daughter is a competent litigator and a law partner in a large law firm. His second son is a VP of finance in a mortgage firm and a graduate of a seminary program with periodic delivery of sermons to his church members. The author used his tenacity in dealing with an insurance company, ensuring continuation of coverage of his former stepdaughter at closed facilities resulting in nearly $500,000 coverage for the medical expenses against the insurance company’s willingness to honor the terms of the policy. He championed the safeguards of the young girl through tumultuous years of his married life with his second spouse, an Iranian lady. That story makes the book that much interesting for trials and tribulations that the author went through during the girl’s adolescent years. Although the challenge ultimately resulted in the break of the marriage, she was ultimately saved and is currently a member of the faculty at an academic institution. This is a success story, mainly due to perseverance, lack of fear, belief in human values, and wisdom to perform the right things and making right decisions. This book contains numerous stories, including the author’s sense of humor in his writing style.

Book My Underground American Dream

Download or read book My Underground American Dream written by Julissa Arce and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Bestseller! What does an undocumented immigrant look like? What kind of family must she come from? How could she get into this country? What is the true price she must pay to remain in the United States? JULISSA ARCE knows firsthand that the most common, preconceived answers to those questions are sometimes far too simple-and often just plain wrong. On the surface, Arce's story reads like a how-to manual for achieving the American dream: growing up in an apartment on the outskirts of San Antonio, she worked tirelessly, achieved academic excellence, and landed a coveted job on Wall Street, complete with a six-figure salary. The level of professional and financial success that she achieved was the very definition of the American dream. But in this brave new memoir, Arce digs deep to reveal the physical, financial, and emotional costs of the stunning secret that she, like many other high-achieving, successful individuals in the United States, had been forced to keep not only from her bosses, but even from her closest friends. From the time she was brought to this country by her hardworking parents as a child, Arce-the scholarship winner, the honors college graduate, the young woman who climbed the ladder to become a vice president at Goldman Sachs-had secretly lived as an undocumented immigrant. In this surprising, at times heart-wrenching, but always inspirational personal story of struggle, grief, and ultimate redemption, Arce takes readers deep into the little-understood world of a generation of undocumented immigrants in the United States today- people who live next door, sit in your classrooms, work in the same office, and may very well be your boss. By opening up about the story of her successes, her heartbreaks, and her long-fought journey to emerge from the shadows and become an American citizen, Arce shows us the true cost of achieving the American dream-from the perspective of a woman who had to scale unseen and unimaginable walls to get there.
