Book excerpt: This is the autobiography of Walter Kurt Hayman. Born in Germany in 1926, he came to Britain in 1938 to escape the Nazis. Educated at Gordonstoun School in Scotland and Cambridge, he was influenced by Mary Cartwright and J. E. Littlewood. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1956 and appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics at Imperial College, London. For over 30 years there he ran a world-famous school in Complex Analysis. He then spent 10 years at York before returning to Imperial College, where he is a Senior Research Fellow. He has received many prizes, awards and honorary degrees. Twice widowed, he now lives in Gloucestershire with his third wife, Marie. He gives a frank account of a life dominated by mathematics, music, friendship, family and service. There are 15 photographs, and a full list of his 218 publications to date. An index lists all persons mentioned in the text. This paperback edition is designed to be as affordable as possible. A hard-cover edition is also available.

The chapters include: Discovering the Primer of DNA - The basic discovery process indicating a common structure with the DNA nucleotide pairs, the relationship of steroid hormones to DNA structure, and its correlation to pharmacological efficacy. Encoding DNA - The encoding of a unified complex that will enable both structure and immediate function of DNA; originally synthesized through intermolecular coupling of pairs of pairs of hydrogen bonded steroid structured molecules. Transmitting DNA - The transmission of the encoded complex through the formation of a DNA double helix and steroid molecules which provide access to the information content contained within the double helix. Decoding DNA - The processes of decoding the double helix structure through the function capability provided by the steroid molecules, including decoding tables of an interaction vessel formed by the steroid molecules comprising walls and ceiling.
