Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Laughing Philosopher The Philosopher purchased for one guinea - In Wardour Street with Talbot - His presumption and folly The connoisseur attempts to crush him - And fails My bronze bust. Humour, said my Laughing Philosopher, is an attribute of God. I asked him whether the idea was original, and he answered that, so far as he knew, it might be; and that, at any rate, it was true. Then we argued upon the question. But before I record our conclusions, or the con versation which led my Philosopher to make the aforesaid remark, I shall tell you something concerning him. Frankly, I acquired him in Wardour Street for the paltry sum of one guinea. There never was any mystery about the matter, and my Laugher himself, with that fine philo sophic spirit which characterizes so many of his utterances, has often told me that I made a bad bargain. Next in importance to those who have been the means of establishing truths worthy of acceptance, may be ranked those. Last words from my Laugher--Tolerance--Faith and Reason--A simile--The Garden of God--A worldflower--" Fare thee well." "To-night," I began, but my bronze interrupted. "To-night," he said, with a strange mystery hidden in his silver voice--" To-night, child of man, you shall give heed to me. Know, first, that this is the fiftieth evening we have had speech together--the fiftieth, and the last. Before I speak again, you and yours, and your children, and your children's children, and the work of your hands and brains, and perchance the pomp of your nation will all be dust; for, ere then, the world shall roll through five hundred more years. Who knows, indeed, that my own battered bronze carcase will hold together so long?" "This is a blow to me," said I; "and it shows the folly of not keeping careful diaries of the great concerns of life. I had thought that many days of intercourse still extended before us. But speak as you will, and let me listen. If you have a mind to sum up now the opinions this brief glimpse of human life has brought to you, I pray you speak. "So be it then. For myself, know this; I take my leave willingly enough, for to me this age is painful above all other ages my eyes have opened upon. To-day landmarks are vanishing with mournful rapidity; certainties grow fewer; theories flood the world in a deluge worse than Deucalion's. Knowledge cows all mankind. It is a lighthouse--a star-glimmer serving to show the awful darkness of the delta that tends towards Truth. I use the word ' delta' of set purpose. There is no straight road or river leading to truth, but a delta of a thousand arteries. Science plods here, Religion there; and all the arteries are very meet to be explored; all command exploration; all...

Book Why We Laugh Classic Reprint

Download or read book Why We Laugh Classic Reprint written by Samuel S. Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why We Laugh The idea which prompted this volume was to string such humors as were illustrative, upon some philosophic threads, which had been floating in my mind. Has not humor a philosophy of its own-physical, mental, and moral? It is said by Hazlitt, in his article on wit and humor, that you can not give a reason why you laugh; that people must laugh of themselves, or not at all. Without denying that we laugh with spontaneous impulse, and sometimes the more, at any restraint upon this impulse, yet the very categories of the critic himself prove that the laugh has a rational philosophy. They answer the Horatian query Quid Rides? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This New York Times bestseller is the hilarious philosophy course everyone wishes they’d had in school. Outrageously funny, Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar... has been a breakout bestseller ever since authors—and born vaudevillians—Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein did their schtick on NPR’s Weekend Edition. Lively, original, and powerfully informative, Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar... is a not-so-reverent crash course through the great philosophical thinkers and traditions, from Existentialism (What do Hegel and Bette Midler have in common?) to Logic (Sherlock Holmes never deduced anything). Philosophy 101 for those who like to take the heavy stuff lightly, this is a joy to read—and finally, it all makes sense! And now, you can read Daniel Klein's further musings on life and philosophy in Travels with Epicurus and Every Time I Find the Meaning of Life, They Change it.

Book The Inquiring Mind Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Inquiring Mind Classic Reprint written by George Boas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inquiring Mind Since what I have to say is addressed to philosophers and not to the general public, I have not felt constrained to load my pages with footnotes. I have tried to indicate sources for my quotations when they were not of the sort which is commonplace, but one can, I think, assume that certain ideas are pretty well known to the profession, and in such cases I have not hesitated to state them without citation. I am happy, however, to acknowledge my debts, even though most of them will be obvious. Thus the influence of A. O. Lovejoy will appear on almost every page, though there is much that he will not accept as true. The influence of Royce is perhaps not so apparent, though his course in metaphysics which I took in 1915-1914 made a very deep impression upon me. In revising my manuscript I was more aware of Dewey's influence than I was when composing the lectures, though, as in Lovejoy's case, I am afraid he would not be too happy at the use which I have made of his suggestions. When one has been reading and lecturing upon the history of philosophy for thirty-five years, one absorbs from the past a great many ideas without remembering where they came from. I have no doubt whatsoever that an his torian could go over these lectures page by page and find anticipa tions Of every assertion which has been made on them. But though I have at least the normal amount of vanity, I hope that I shall have profited enough from my studies to realize the futility of trying to be utterly original.
