Book excerpt: Simon & Rockaway appears to be a topnotch CPA firm with glamorous clients in sports, real estate, and entertainment. But look closely, and you find its flamboyant leader, Frankie Rockaway is a publicity-seeking schemer, and his inner circle of partners little more than street thugs, embezzlers, and corrupt hustlers. What attracted a young and innocent Cody Gardiner to this firm? Why do the partners treat him so well, and what does he do when he finds out who they really are? It all starts one summer on the rocky coast of Maine when Cody, as a teen-ager, falls in love with the beautiful daughter of Kaptain Teal, the legendary circus promoter. Their plans to meet again are ruined but neither will ever forget the adventures they had or the promises they made.... Years later, Cody marries Jessica. Brilliant and desirous, she stumbles upon an opportunity to make a fortune working on a secret project with Cody's ex-boss, the distinguished Harold Wilcox, which puts the pair directly up against Simon & Rockaway. Can Jessica out-smart Frankie Rockaway and his cronies while hiding her involvement from Cody? And, all the while, can Cody keep his new secret relationship with the flirtatious and irresistible Sandy Munsen from Jessica? Follow the dangerous but sentimental trail of three generations of the Gardiner family through the shadowy corners of America's boardrooms, the back offices of big time sports, and the magical folklore of the old European circus bands, as Cody's and Jessica's separate worlds collide and explode in a whirlwind of love, lust, blackmail, and revenge.

Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts introduces an unforgettable thief in an unputdownable new novel... Greed. Desire. Obsession. Revenge . . . It’s all in a night’s work. Harry Booth started stealing at nine to keep a roof over his ailing mother’s head, slipping into luxurious, empty homes at night to find items he could trade for precious cash. When his mother finally succumbed to cancer, he left Chicago—but kept up his nightwork, developing into a master thief with a code of honor and an expertise in not attracting attention—or getting attached. Until he meets Miranda Emerson, and the powerful bond between them upends all his rules. But along the way, Booth has made some dangerous associations, including the ruthless Carter LaPorte, who sees Booth as a tool he controls for his own profit. Knowing LaPorte will leverage any personal connection, Booth abandons Miranda for her own safety—cruelly, with no explanation—and disappears. But the bond between Miranda and Booth is too strong, pulling them inexorably back together. Now Booth must face LaPorte, to truly free himself and Miranda once and for all.

Book Ask a Manager

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Book 39 Tips for Surviving Busy Season

Download or read book 39 Tips for Surviving Busy Season written by Cpa Alec Borlin and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-10 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a CPA for CPA's, this book is intended to help those in the public accounting space find the work/life balance they are looking for, during the most challenging months of the year. As most people in corporate america know, we spend the vast majority of our waking hours at work, not with our loved ones traditionally. This book is an excellent resource for anyone working in excess of 60 hours a week, and looking to implement new strategies to spend more time doing what they would prefer to be doing. If you can take away just 1 helpful tip from this book, then it's original intentions and creation has been fulfilled. This is not going to take you from 60 hours a week to 30 rather, this will give you some insights that have helped me, as well as some individuals I have interviewed, find a way to create the ideal work week for yourself. I am not an expert, but I have been through this and feel that I was able to create that ideal balance where I was being efficient with my time at work and still out there having fun with my friends and family. Again, you don't have to be in public accounting to benefit from the this book, I am only recalling on the experiences that I have had. These tips are universal in their application. Enjoy !
