A briar pipe filled with Arcadia Mixture starts the reveries in the one ; a hearth fire, in the other. The five bachelors in " My Lady Nicotine " seem to be utterly dissimilar in tastes and feelings—and have only one bond of union, their common love for the famous Arcadia Mixture. The solemnity with which they treat their pipes; their assured superiority to everybody outside of the circle which knows and appreciates that mysterious brand of tobacco ; the sentimental selfishness of their bachelor existence, and the delicate humor with which the quiet episodes are narrated—these are some of the charming qualities of the book. But the crowning humor of it is that the story is told by one of their number who boldly announces in the first chapter that he has married, and his wife has won him from his pipe and his comrades. He cheaply moralizes on their enslavement, and then in reveries calls up the happy days when he smoked with them. The closing chapter is a most subtle piece of writing. The narrator praises his constancy to his promise never to smoke again, and adds: " I have not even any craving for the Arcadia now, though it is a tobacco that should only be smoked by our greatest men." Then he confesses that when his wife is asleep and all the house is still, he sits with his empty briar in his mouth, and listens to the taps of a pipe in the hands of a smoker (whom he has never seen) on the other side of

The story mostly centers on his youthful years, when he would get together with his buddies to smoke his Arcadia tobacco blend, which they regarded as the pinnacle of all tobacco. In many ways, the story is less about tobacco and more about Victorian England's ideologies and the ways in which a group of men might come together to talk and have fun. The Arcadia blend may be what binds the buddies together, but most of the narrative focuses on their activities or sights when they are together. Of fact, this book and the same author's Little White Bird have a lot in common stylistically. Both stories revolve around single bachelors who spend a lot of time lazing around with close friends who also indulge in the same vices while being looked after by subpar individuals who are just suitable for serving. The aspects of his nephew's visit are uncannily identical to the games he used to play with his stepchildren.

In many ways the story is less about tobacco and more about the ideas of victorian England and the way that a group of guys could get together to discuss things and enjoy life. While the Arcadia blend is what ties the friends together most of the story is what they do or see when they are together. There are of course many simularities in the style between this book and the Little White Bird by the same author. Both deal with single bachelors who spend much of their time in idleness with close friends who share the same vices while being watched over by lesser people who are only fit to be servants. The elements of his nephews visit also bears an earie simularity to his own games with his stepchildren. I found after reading the book a desire to have a deep friendship with others like the books characters have with each other. Though it is a fictional work I have seen the same thing happen in friends that I know who smoke who seem to have an attachment to others who they smoke with. Although I would never smoke as I know enough of the damaging aspects of the hobby I can easily see the attraction in having groups around who I can experience life with. Overall it was a pleasant book which is very much British and very much victorian.
