Download or read book Journey of Hope written by Kenneth C. Barnes and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia was founded by the American Colonization Society (ACS) in the 1820s as an African refuge for free blacks and liberated American slaves. While interest in African migration waned after the Civil War, it roared back in the late nineteenth century with the rise of Jim Crow segregation and disfranchisement throughout the South. The back-to-Africa movement held great new appeal to the South's most marginalized citizens, rural African Americans. Nowhere was this interest in Liberia emigration greater than in Arkansas. More emigrants to Liberia left from Arkansas than any other state in the 1880s and 1890s. In Journey of Hope, Kenneth C. Barnes explains why so many black Arkansas sharecroppers dreamed of Africa and how their dreams of Liberia differed from the reality. This rich narrative also examines the role of poor black farmers in the creation of a black nationalist identity and the importance of the symbolism of an ancestral continent. Based on letters to the ACS and interviews of descendants of the emigrants in war-torn Liberia, this study captures the life of black sharecroppers in the late 1800s and their dreams of escaping to Africa.

Book Incarceration Nations

Download or read book Incarceration Nations written by Baz Dreisinger and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baz Dreisinger travels behind bars in nine countries to rethink the state of justice in a global context Beginning in Africa and ending in Europe, Incarceration Nations is a first-person odyssey through the prison systems of the world. Professor, journalist, and founder of the Prison-to-College-Pipeline, Dreisinger looks into the human stories of incarcerated men and women and those who imprison them, creating a jarring, poignant view of a world to which most are denied access, and a rethinking of one of America’s most far-reaching global exports: the modern prison complex. From serving as a restorative justice facilitator in a notorious South African prison and working with genocide survivors in Rwanda, to launching a creative writing class in an overcrowded Ugandan prison and coordinating a drama workshop for women prisoners in Thailand, Dreisinger examines the world behind bars with equal parts empathy and intellect. She journeys to Jamaica to visit a prison music program, to Singapore to learn about approaches to prisoner reentry, to Australia to grapple with the bottom line of private prisons, to a federal supermax in Brazil to confront the horrors of solitary confinement, and finally to the so-called model prisons of Norway. Incarceration Nations concludes with climactic lessons about the past, present, and future of justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people will never be rejected by their family, outcast and alone at 14. Most people won't be threatened, stalked and almost murdered by the mob. Most people will never serve time in a maximum-security prison. But everyone has gone through traumas and devastating disappointments. In this riveting memoir, StevieRay Hansen will lead you through his incredible journey from homeless kid to multimillionaire oilman willing to give a helping hand to other throwaway kids. "I realized that there was a powerful connection between forgiveness and prosperity," Hansen says. "When I finally forgave my parents from my heart, it seemed as though whatever had blocked prosperity came unplugged. "I plowed money back into the business. I gave large amounts to widows and orphans. I made a startling discovery. I couldn't give it all away. God kept multiplying it back to me. Forgiveness changed everything. "It's hard to describe the difference that forgiveness has brought. It's like winning a lottery ticket. You can hold onto the ticket-with all its promise-or you can cash it in and claim your new life."

Book Running The Race To Win

Download or read book Running The Race To Win written by Darren T Carter and published by Foundation Publications. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Running The Race To Win' is a book about developing a deeper understanding of discipleship and developing a deeper relationship with Christ. It does not matter if you are a businessperson, schoolteacher, nurse, athlete, computer technician, student etc. you are called to be a disciple and to make disciples. The contemporary church has many times neglected the original command laid down by Christ Himself and for this reason discipleship seems to be a radical message. However, for the church to fulfill its mission we must once again return to this radical call. The word radical comes from the Latin word radix meaning the root of things. Radical discipleship is simply a call to return to biblical foundations. Biblical foundations are at the root of discipleship since a disciple is one who has been instructed in the foundational teachings of Christ.
