Book excerpt: From January to June of 2003, I had a front row seat to the triumph and tragedy that was Operation Iraqi Freedom. I witnessed the lightning march to Baghdad and the slippery slope of Post-hostility and stability operations. After three months of supporting the DOD Media Embedding efforts from the Kuwait Hilton, my organization got an abrupt change of mission to go to Baghdad to become the backbone of an interagency public affairs / public diplomacy operation in support of the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Affairs. We transitioned to supporting the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) and finally formed and handed over the reigns of Public Affairs Support to Coalition Joint Task Force Seven on the 15th of June. This paper will describe the events as they unfolded and the lessons we learned about the media embedding experiment and how the lack of interagency coordination virtually erased the phenomenal victory our country had just won militarily. The information in this paper reflects my personal experience, understanding and perceptions of the events as they occurred in 2003 and in no way reflects the official government position.

The book then outlines the important factors of Iraqi history and culture which dominated relations between the two nations during the 1980s and 1990s.
