Book My Inkwell of Prayers Poems

Download or read book My Inkwell of Prayers Poems written by Marie Hall-Fray and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie's prayers and poems reflect her gratitude to God for life, good friends, and the love of her family; but more importantly, gratitude that she came to know God through meditation and prayer. Listening to the silent night, going within and surrendering all her cares, reaching for and touching that wondrous peace that comes after much soul-searching; Marie's pen tells a story of how God waits for you in earnest to come to Him, willing, open, contrite and humble. For when the heart and life is open to God, into them He pours His peace, His blessings, and His love. Marie's prayers and poems relate a journey that you too can take to come to know God, if you but recognize how worthy you are of the gifts that God is willing to share with you: sweet and perpetual peace, boundless joy, and unconditional love are only a few. Marie Hall-Fray began writing poems in her early teens. Today, God has inspired her to dip her pen into an inkwell that is full and overflowing with reflections of her steadfast relationship with Him. This is her first book of prayers, but she will continue being used by God to write so that the heart of every person who reads her work will be blessed. Marie was born in a nature-filled town located in Jamaica, W.I. She worked as a flight attendant for 18 years and as a manager for the famous Rose Hall Great House in Montego Bay for 3 years. Marie now resides in Florida with her husband and two children. She works as a home health contractor with the elderly and is learning many valuable things about life through their wisdom. When Marie is not working, she retreats to her beautiful flower garden because of her appreciation for nature.

Book excerpt: A Deeper Well is the culmination of a lifetime of seeking God. The journey of a penitent heart in turmoil, spent yet contrite, determined to find the perpetual peace that one can only find through a life surrendered to the creator. After being raised in a Christian home by a mother who was an ardent follower of Christ, I was baptized at age 14 and accepted the Lord Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I soon walked away from my Christian principles, and found myself desiring the things of the world. All my disappointments hurt and anger were tossed over the wall I built around my heart. Life became tumultuous and it took me years to realize that the wonderfully made me had disappeared, giving place to someone I no longer recognized. Something was missing. In 1998 I migrated to Florida and was invited to church by my sister. I started attending services every Sunday, and became a regular tither. One night, while praying, I found myself sobbing. With a great sob and as if without my own effort, I was prostrate on the ground crying out to God. At that moment I surrendered my life to Him. The prayers and poems in A Deeper Well reflect my journey, the purging of my heart and finding my way back home to God. These poems are inspirations of situations and circumstances that I have encountered in daily life. The words are not my own, but the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who fills my thoughts and flows through my pen onto the pages. An awesome experience!

Book Under the Sky of My Africa

Download or read book Under the Sky of My Africa written by Catharine Theimer Nepomnyashchy and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging consideration of the nature and significance of Pushkin's African heritage Roughly in the year 1705, a young African boy, acquired from the seraglio of the Turkish sultan, was transported to Russia as a gift to Peter the Great. This child, later known as Abram Petrovich Gannibal, was to become Peter's godson and to live to a ripe old age, having attained the rank of general and the status of Russian nobility. More important, he was to become the great-grandfather of Russia's greatest national poet, Alexander Pushkin. It is the contention of the editors of this book, borne out by the essays in the collection, that Pushkin's African ancestry has played the role of a "wild card" of sorts as a formative element in Russian cultural mythology; and that the ways in which Gannibal's legacy has been included in or excluded from Pushkin's biography over the last two hundred years can serve as a shifting marker of Russia's self-definition. The first single volume in English on this rich topic, Under the Sky of My Africa addresses the wide variety of interests implicated in the question of Pushkin's blackness-race studies, politics, American studies, music, mythopoetic criticism, mainstream Pushkin studies. In essays that are by turns biographical, iconographical, cultural, and sociological in focus, the authors-representing a broad range of disciplines and perspectives-take us from the complex attitudes toward race in Russia during Pushkin's era to the surge of racism in late Soviet and post-Soviet contemporary Russia. In sum, Under the Sky of My Africa provides a wealth of basic material on the subject as well as a series of provocative readings and interpretations that will influence future considerations of Pushkin and race in Russian culture.

Book Tassels of Blue

Download or read book Tassels of Blue written by Norma Williams Lasch and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Author of this Book of Poetry was born and raised in rural Stephentown, in Upstate New York, with four older sisters, and a younger brother. As a country girl, Norma was always interested in Reading and Writing and being Outdoors with Nature. Her love of Poetry is reflected in this inspiring, and often humorous collection, spanning over five decades, where she shares some of her hopes, dreams and sorrows, giving the Lord Jesus Christ all the Glory. As a young Mother she was touched by the Holy Spirit when her children were required, with her help, to learn daily Bible verses for the Five Day Club held at their home by a Christian teenager from CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship). The verse she vividly remembers is Luke 19:10: "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost". Shortly after that both she and her husband answered an Altar Call, at their local church, giving their hearts to the Lord. They did not know that the entire Church Body had been praying for their Salvation, as they had been taking their kids to Sunday School, but not attending! The Author's Enjoyment, along with her Eight Grandchildren and her two Living Children, include Bible Study, Crafting, Sewing, Music, Camping and exploring the New England Seashore and the Adirondack Mountains. A married lady of 52 years to a loving husband, this book will culminate her desire for this Collection of Poetry to be finally published. As a Contributing Author of several Anthologies, other Publications include Poetry published in the Barrister Magazine, The County News and Views, The Country Register, the Troy Record, and Quill Books. Norma and her husband Bill worship the Lord at New Hope for Life in the rural Town of Nassau, New York where the Holy Spirit has inspired many of her Poems and Songs of Praise included in this Collection.

Book Because Sadness is Beautiful

Download or read book Because Sadness is Beautiful written by Tanaka Chidora and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tanaka Chidora writes with the nerve and verve of firework displays in these poems. There is a peace armed to the teeth here, and over there words are just fugitives scuttling away from the recognition of the reader. Through this burst of iron vocabulary discipline, the poet suggests that even if sadness could be all we are left with, we still need to give sadness a try until it becomes beautiful, because sadness has always been beautiful, anyway." - Memory Chirere, University of Zimbabwe

Download or read book The Pages of Day and Night written by Adūnīs and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calling poetry a "question that begets another question," Adonis sets into motion this stream of unending inquiry with difficult questions about exile, identity, language, politics, and religion. Repeatedly mentioned as a possible Nobel laureate, Adonis is a leading figure in twentieth-century Arabic poetry. Restless and relentless, Adonis explores the pain and otherness of exile, a state so complete that absence replaces identity and becomes the exile's only presence. Exile can take many forms for the Arabic poet, who must practice his craft as an outsider, separated not only from the nation of his birth but from his own language; in the present as in the past, that exile can mean censorship, banishment, or death. Through these poems, Adonis gives an exquisite voice to the silence of absence.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1940s, Arabic poetry has spoken for an Arab conscience, as much as it has debated positions and ideologies, nationally and worldwide. This book tackles issues of modernity and tradition in Arabic poetry as manifested in poetic texts and criticism by poets as participants in transformation and change. It studies the poetic in its complexity, relating to issues of selfhood, individuality, community, religion, ideology, nation, class and gender. Al-Musawi also explores in context issues that have been cursorily noticed or neglected, like Shi’i poetics, Sufism, women’s poetry, and expressions of exilic consciousness. Arabic Poetry employs current literary theory and provides comprehensive coverage of modern and post-modern poetry from the 1950s onwards, making it essential reading for those with interests in Arabic culture and literature and Middle East studies.

Book excerpt: PrefaceAt an early age of nine, growing up, I discovered the passion to write. I loved using my creative imagination and making up fictitious characters. I always amazed my family with my short stories. At the age of fifteen, I was introduced to poetry while living in Hawaii. I became fascinated with the idea of writing poetry when I read my friend's poems. When I started writing poems, it became more intense compared to writing short fiction stories. My second book, Lyrical Passion Tears From My Inkwell is a very touching book of poetry that talks about the variety of life situations I have gone through or am going through now. They are my thoughts and feelings from my emotional distress. I wrote this book to share my story hoping to help someone else who is going through similar experiences. I want to be free with my pen and continue to let my creative juices flow. I pray you enjoy reading this book as well as I've enjoyed writing it.With love,Lyrical Passion

Book excerpt: A fictionalized autobiography of the woman who wrote Frankenstein. Two centuries ago, a twenty-year-old woman invented science fiction. Her father gave her a better education than any woman of the age could hope for—and made her the victim of ongoing incest. At fifteen, she became involved with one of the greatest poets in England and made love to him on her mother’s grave. When she was sixteen, she escaped from home by running away for a six-week walking tour of Europe, and shared Percy Bysshe Shelley with her sister. And her mentor, Lord Byron, challenged her to prove she was as good a writer as the best poet-philosophers of the Enlightenment. Both men admired her mind, and both wanted more. She would publish a book that changed the world—and this historical novel imagines her inner life as a woman far ahead of her time.

Book excerpt: The 2016 winner of the Walt Whitman Award of the Academy of American Poets, selected by Carolyn Forché When I make the crossing, you must not be taken no matter what the current gives. When we reach the camp, there will be thousands like us. If I make it onto the plane, you must follow me to the roads and waiting pastures of America. We will not ride the water today on the shoulders of buffalo as we used to many years ago, nor will we forage for the sweetest mangoes. I am refugee. You are too. Cry, but do not weep. —from “Transmigration” Afterland is a powerful, essential collection of poetry that recounts with devastating detail the Hmong exodus from Laos and the fate of thousands of refugees seeking asylum. Mai Der Vang is telling the story of her own family, and by doing so, she also provides an essential history of the Hmong culture’s ongoing resilience in exile. Many of these poems are written in the voices of those fleeing unbearable violence after U.S. forces recruited Hmong fighters in Laos in the Secret War against communism, only to abandon them after that war went awry. That history is little known or understood, but the three hundred thousand Hmong now living in the United States are living proof of its aftermath. With poems of extraordinary force and grace, Afterland holds an original place in American poetry and lands with a sense of humanity saved, of outrage, of a deep tradition broken by war and ocean but still intact, remembered, and lived.
