Book My Idol Years

Download or read book My Idol Years written by Mark Holden and published by Transit Lounge . This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Carnation Kid and early pop stardom to LA songsmith and actor to producer and manager to Idol judge to barrister, Mark Holden's memoir is always startlingly honest, a unique portrait of the music and TV industries, of family and ageing in the public eye.In 2006 Mark had a premonition that 2007 was going to be his last year on Australian Idol and kept a revealing record of what happened behind the scenes. That diary provides a central thread in this hugely entertaining portrait of his rollercoaster life. Yet My Idol Years covers it all, including growing up in Adelaide, the Countdown years, and the wild side of making music and living in Los Angeles in the 1980s. It is a funny, warm and generous book full of stories about personalities including Elton John, David Hasselhoff, Molly Meldrum, John Paul Young, and of course his fellow Idol presenters. Mark also tells the story behind the Bobo the Clown incident on Dancing with the Stars, something that caused a media sensation at the time. But in what is arguably one the most candid memoirs in recent times, Mark isn't afraid to reveal his own vulnerabilities, failings and challenges, as well as the triumphs. Ultimately My Idol Years is a touchdown, both a celebration of the music and the entertainment worlds and a moving testament to the value of family, friends and the many lessons learned along the way.

Book 50 Year Adventure

Download or read book 50 Year Adventure written by Rick Evans and published by Rick Evans. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may not be obvious why someone like myself would write my memoir. I am not a famous person. I am not a professional athlete. I am not a politician. I am not even known in my local area of North Carolina. I do not fit into any of these typical categories of autobiographical writers. However, as in most people, I have a story to tell that is unique from many and common to some. We all have stories that people can relate to and sympathize with, if only we just tell them. I find a great relief when I learn that others have survived similar struggles that I am going through. I am living proof that it is possible to live through many things and come out the other side a better person...

Book Gordie Howe A Year in Galt Softcover

Download or read book Gordie Howe A Year in Galt Softcover written by David Menary and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second edition softcover version of David Menary's "Gordie Howe: A Year in Galt" which highlights a pivotal year in Howe's youth - the year the 16-year-old left his prairie home for Galt, Ontario, and the 1944-45 hockey season. He was 16 years old that season, away from home for the first time, and too shy to attend the local high school. Howe became a fixture with the Galt Junior A Red Wings, even though he was unable to play any league games in the OHA. The team already had a western import - Terry Cavanagh, later the mayor of Edmonton - but coach Al Murray convinced him to stay with the team to practice and play exhibition games. Howe and some of his teammates recall many of the people associated with the team from that year. Subsequent visits back to Galt (Cambridge), and the historic arena which was reminiscent of the Olympia in Detroit, showed Howe at his off-ice finest; a kindly, considerate man whose characteristic humour and palpable decency endeared him to old man, maiden, young man and child.

Book NIV Real Life Devotional Bible for Women

Download or read book NIV Real Life Devotional Bible for Women written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 1536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As women, we want to fully live up to our God-given potential. But we fall victim to the messages the world whispers in our ears: “You need to buy all of this stuff in order to feel complete.” “You’d be a lot happier if you had a different husband.” “If you’re not super mom and you can’t do it all, you aren’t good enough.” The reality is, what the world tells us isn’t true. If we listened to these messages, our lives would become harried, empty, and phony. Instead we need to listen to the messages that God gives us in his Word. A great place to start is Proverbs 31. The woman described in this passage seems like the ideal woman, and she is. But even more, she is real. She is authentic and true, with a heart for God, a heart for her family, and a heart for her community. How do you become that woman? It’s a journey, and it happens by the choices you make every day. The NIV Real-Life Devotional Bible for Women will help you become the woman you want to be. With insightful daily devotions from Lysa TerKeurst and the women at Proverbs 31 Ministries, this Bible helps you maintain life’s balance in spite of today’s hectic pace. The 365 daily devotions inspire you to live authentically as a woman of God.

Book Flying with the Fifteenth Air Force

Download or read book Flying with the Fifteenth Air Force written by Tom Faulkner and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1944 and 1945, Tom Faulkner was a B-24 pilot flying out of San Giovanni airfield in Italy as a member of the 15th Air Force of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Only 19 years old when he completed his 28th and last mission, Tom was one of the youngest bomber pilots to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Between September 1944 and the end of February 1945, he flew against targets in Hungary, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Yugoslavia. On Tom’s last mission against the marshalling yards at Augsburg, Germany, his plane was severely damaged, and he had to fly to Switzerland where he and his crew were interned. The 15th Air Force generally has been overshadowed by works on the 8th Air Force based in England. Faulkner’s memoir helps fill an important void by providing a first-hand account of a pilot and his crew during the waning months of the war, as well as a description of his experiences before his military service. David L. Snead has edited the memoir and provided annotations and corroboration for the various missions.

Book Many Changeful Years

Download or read book Many Changeful Years written by Graham Lister and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Changeful Years might well have the subtitle The Moulding of a Surgeon for it tells of the early life of a man who became one of the first dozen or so microsurgeons to reattach amputated limbs (as outlined in the prologue, the story of an injured infant). Throughout the main theme, the author interjects, as a counterpoint, tales and commentaries from his later life as an established surgeon, dealing with unique patients and colleagues, the working life of an emergency surgeon, errors and their causes, nursing practice, the adverse impact of managed care, changes in discipline and surgery in the less developed world. The formative times that are the theme of the tale gave little hint of where Lister was going, for he grew up in a working class family in wartime Britain, a family that for several years lived in one room, often in straitened circumstance. The memoir describes a Britain long since gone, a Britain still wedded to ancient measures and currency, confident of its Empire and its preeminence, but whose inhabitants suffered blackouts, night bombing raids, smoke screens, gas masks, and austere rationing not only of food but of clothing and household wares. And it was a Britain whose menfolk, such as the authors father, were absent, often not to return. If they did return it was as strangers, many bitter about the cards life had dealt them. Many Changeful Years follows the author through these war years, examines life in the back streets of Glasgow, describes the pursuits of the times, carries him through school and on to an ancient University, supplementing the family budget throughout by working delivery trucks, cleaning guesthouses, cutting grass, delivering the Royal Mail, chicken farming, laying sewage pipe, serving as a hospital porter, a bus conductor and a mortuary attendant. The British National Health Service is a daring innovation, appealing to the author, then both a nationalist and a socialist. Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where Joseph Lister developed antiseptic surgery, has a 200-year history; its casualty department is the busiest in Europe; in it physicians learn of the ways of gangland, managing wounds inflicted by chains, razors and sharpened metal combs. The nursing staff of the 1950s, which has a proud legacy, rigidly controls the open wards. Obstetric training requires that the undergraduate perform deliveries; the author goes to a working class London hospital where he learns much from the mothers and midwives. Prejudice is strong in Glasgow society, similar to that in Northern Ireland. He works as a substitute doctor in the back streets of Glasgow and around Britain. Five years in the Royal Navy commence with basic training; instructors attempt to create leaders of men from physicians, dentists and pastors. The author joins a frigate bound for the West Indies; officers and training exercises are described. Damage control at sea demands a strategy for tending multiple casualties The frigate was designed for 120 but carries over 200. The authors report shows that it is unfit for habitation with conditions worse than those prescribed in the Poor Houses Act of 1887. The frigate acts as guard ship at the talks between Macmillan and Kennedy in the Bahamas in December 1962; the author remarks in his journal on the lapses in the Presidents security. Riots break out in British Guiana; the frigate assists. During the Cuban missile crisis the vessel encounters the U.S. blockade. Studies at the Royal College of Surgeons of England follow. At the Naval Hospital he serves under a surgeon who first used antibiotics in the military on HMS Hood in 1938. The author treats the Admiral who saved the British Far Eastern fleet from a fate similar to Pearl Harbor. The author goes to the island of Mauritius for three years; there are multiple ethnic groups in one of the highest population densities in the world. The Navy occupies a re
