Book Craft of the Inland Waterways

Download or read book Craft of the Inland Waterways written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the history of the various craft that have been used for transport on Britain’s rivers and canals from the earliest times to the present day. The first section deals with the long history of the development of river craft, from prehistoric log boats to the whole range of sailing barges, such as the Humber keel and the Thames barge. By the middle of the 18th century, canal construction brought in a new generation of craft, not just the familiar narrow boats, but the wide boats such as the Leeds & Liverpool short boats, maintenance craft and even passenger boats. Steam power was introduced in the 19th century for a variety of crafts from tugs to pleasure steamers, while the 20th century brought in the diesel motors for boats and barges of all kinds. Today, there is still some commercial traffic, but an ever-increasing demand for boats for pleasure. Much of this story is told in terms of preserved craft and is also based on the author’s own experience aboard many of these craft, whether crewing a Thames barge or working in the engine room of a Clyde puffer.

Book My Holidays on Inland Waterways

Download or read book My Holidays on Inland Waterways written by P. Bonthron and published by . This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Bonthron (1857-1921) was the author of My Holidays on Inland Waterways and of many articles about his boating exploits at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There is little information about him, but we know from his writings that he was a successful shipping agent. He certainly had a smart motor boat — at a time when motor boating was in its infancy — a large houseboat on the Thames and a chauffeur driven car. His Thames motor boat, Balgonie, also gives a clue to his Scottish origin. Peter Bonthron was born in Scotland and by the time of the 1891 Census was lodger in St Clement-Danes, London. He married late, at the age of 53, and his wife Mary was 46. At the end of his introduction Bonthron says 'I would say that in travelling through these waterways my motor boat was in a number of instances the pioneer of this class of craft.' in fact the waterways at this time were in decay; they were still seen as being commercial, and yet their life-blood had been drained by railway competition. This classic text reveals the waterway holidays of a wealthy pioneer during Edwardian England and was a best-seller during the dark days of 1916.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Fragrance of Grass comes a meditation on water and nature, fishing and growing older. On the Water is a gorgeously written collection of essays that all take place on or near the water and pay tribute to the flora and fauna associated with those ecosystems. There are essays about the finer points of tickling rainbow trout in the streams of Normandy, and of eagles and ospreys fishing for bass while barely breaking the surface of the water. There are stories of droughts and floods, of dogs and boats, of worms and rattlesnakes and even of catching and cooking soft-shell turtles that taste like osso-bucco. There is fishing and diving in the Bahamas, tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys, and fly fishing for sailfish in Central America. And there are larger-than-life personalities that are bigger than the fish tales they tell! On the Water is a finely honed and well crafted collection of tales for the true sportsman and makes for a perfect companion volume to la Valdene’s celebrated collection of essays on hunting.

Book excerpt: In the sequel to Native Companions, Gran Yan, the tree of memories, continues narrating history about the traditional landowners of Yaraan Grove, the Booran clan, named after the pelican. After a long separation from their homeland due to fire and drought, the small community returns to Yaraan Grove, where the firstborn infant in their territory is named Mullawanda as a tribute to the great eagle Mullawaa, which guided the travellers safely home. During his development, Mullawanda proves to have intelligence far beyond his people, and coupled with an adventurous spirit, his journeys and the people he meets lead him into some intriguing situations, involving many fascinating people. This seven-part novel involves a number of indigenous clans that congregate at social gatherings, where tribal priests commune with ancestral spirits, sharing their legends with the audience. Many dreamtime legends unfold about their departed people, and a number of compelling mysteries are solved. The key to Gran Yan’s knowledge about such far-distant adventures is unlocked in the final chapter of this seven-part book.
