Book The Credentialed Court

  • Author : Benjamin H. Barton
  • Publisher : Encounter Books
  • Release : 2022-03-08
  • ISBN : 1641772050
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book The Credentialed Court written by Benjamin H. Barton and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Credentialed Court starts by establishing just how different today’s Justices are from their predecessors. The book combines two massive empirical studies of every Justice’s background from John Jay to Amy Coney Barrett with short, readable bios of past greats to demonstrate that today’s Justices arrive on the Court with much narrower experiences than they once did. Today’s Justices have spent more time in elite academic settings (both as students and faculty) than any previous Court. Every current Justice but Barrett attended either Harvard or Yale Law School, and four of the Justices were tenured professors at prestigious law schools. They also spent more time as Federal Appellate Court Judges than any previous Court. These two jobs (tenured law professor and appellate judge) share two critical components: both jobs are basically lifetime appointments that involve little or no contact with the public at large. The modern Supreme Court Justices have spent their lives in cloistered and elite settings, the polar opposite of past Justices. The current Supreme Court is packed with a very specific type of person: type-A overachievers who have triumphed in a long tournament measuring academic and technical legal excellence. This Court desperately lacks individuals who reflect a different type of “merit.” The book examines the exceptional and varied lives of past greats from John Marshall to Thurgood Marshall and asks how many, if any, of these giants would be nominated today. The book argues against our current bookish and narrow version of meritocracy. Healthier societies offer multiple different routes to success and onto bodies like our Supreme Court.

Download or read book Johann Henrich Wagner written by Margaret Dent Wagner and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walk through history in the footsteps of Johann Henrich Wagner, a.k.a Henry Wagner, a.k.a Henry Waggoner of Russell County, an early 18th century German pioneer. In 1742, Johann Henrich Wagner (later identified as Henry Waggoner of Russell County, Virginia), disembarked in Philadelphia with his step-father Theobald Nabinger, where they were caught up in fast-moving events that impacted them and their German and Swiss community. Henry's adventures took him through the French and Indian War, Dunmores War, the Lost State of Franklin, and the American Revolution. Of wider interest, Henry's Chronicle is a wellspring of information that can be viewed as a case study for understanding the pioneer life of a newly arrived German in Colonial America. The American wilderness was not for the faint-hearted. Henry met the economic, social, and political challenges on the frontier and sprang to the defence of his community on more than one occasion. He made his own bold choices of where and when to go, and where and when to fight, or not, as the case may be. He has not been idealized, and despite his human faults, the reader will find "flesh and blood on the bones" rather than just a name and dates on paper. Included are children Henry (Jr/II), Michael, John, Jacob, and Savina (with John Newland), and also the allied families of Schwab, Conradi, Nabinger (Novinger), Boessohr (Bashore), and Mueller. There are hundreds of collateral families documented from Kusel, Nohelden, and Wolfersweiler, Germany; Bethel and Lebanon Townships, and Jonestown, Pennsylvania; Fincastle, Montgomery, and Russell Counties, Virginia; Washington and Sullivan Counties, Tennessee; Pulaski County, Kentucky; and Lawrence County, Indiana. Perhaps you will find your family within the pages of this book. Your effort, diligence, and research have resulted in a truly amazing story. "Well Done." - CDR James M. Novinger USNR

Book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918

Download or read book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918 written by George Catlett Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Marshall was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. He drafted this manuscript while he was in Washington, D.C., between 1919 and 1924 as aide-de-camp to General of the Armies John J. Pershing. However, given the growing bitterness of the "memoirs wars" of the period he decided against publication, and the draft sat unused until the 1970s when Marshall's step-daughter and her husband decided to publish it.
