This keepsake volume is the perfect gift for graduates, aspiring creators, or anyone who needs a reminder to run toward what gives them joy. When Neil Gaiman delivered his "Make Good Art" commencement address at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, he shared his thoughts about creativity, bravery, and strength. Acclaimed designer Chip Kidd brings his unique sensibility to this seminal address in this gorgeous edition that commemorates Gaiman's inspiring message.

Book Japan s Name Culture

Download or read book Japan s Name Culture written by Herbert E. Plutschow and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study in English of Japanese names - their history and evolution, and ontological implications. Its main purpose is to understand the development of the nomenclature in its religious (animistic) and socio-political contexts. We learn, for example, how belief in the animistic-symbolic property of names developed into extensive taboos and, in connection with these taboos, into the custom of revealing names in case of marriage or territorial surrender. Whereas private (religious) use of surnames was tolerated, commoners without public functions were prohibited from public use of surnames. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), on the other hand, the government enforced the universal registry of surnames to conform with its policy of universal conscription, education, taxation and the postal service. The book will be of particular interest to students of Japan and Japanese nomenclature. It will also appeal to the general reader drawn to learning more about Japan by looking at its history, religion and culture through the names of its people.

Book The Internet

Download or read book The Internet written by Lelia Green and published by Berg. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life without the internet, a very new technology, seems almost unimaginable for most people in western nations. Today the internet is intrinsic to media and communications, entertainment, politics, defence, business, banking, education and administrative systems as well as to social interaction. The Internet disentangles this extraordinarily complex information and communication technology from its place in our daily lives, allowing it to be examined anew. Technology has historically been shaped by governmental, military and commercial requirements, but the development of the internet is increasingly driven by its users. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and many other emerging applications are shifting the way we express ourselves, communicate with our friends, and even engage with global politics. At the same time three-quarters of the world's population remain effectively excluded from the internet. Packed with case studies drawn from around the world, The Internet presents a clear and up-to-date introduction to the social, cultural, technological and political worlds this new media form is creating.

Book Hito Steyerl

Book excerpt: Hito Steyerl is rightly considered one of the most exciting artists working today who speculates on the impact of the Internet and digitization on the fabric of our everyday lives. Her films and writings offer an astute, provocative, and often funny analysis of the dizzying speed with which images and data are reconfigured, altered, and dispersed, many times over, accelerating into infinity or crashing into oblivion. 0Published to accompany the artist’s survey exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, this book gathers a series of essays and close readings of Steyerl's films from the past ten years. Newly commissioned texts by Sven Lütticken, Karen Archey, Ana Teixeira Pinto, and Nick Aikens, alongside writings by Thomas Elsaesser, Pablo Lafuente, David Riff, and Steyerl, are spliced with over one hundred pages of color stills. This publication is a charged slideshow of the artist’s extraordinary investigations into the status, circulation, and materiality of images.

The existence of such design elements is not questioned because they are seen as the standard. Nick Williams's book is exclusively dedicated to denim branding and deconstructs every element that goes into branding a pair of jeans. These elements are a jeans' identity, its source code, a marker from which to discover the jean's provenance. Through beautiful and inspirational photography, this book tells the fascinating and sometimes surprising history of denim branding from the 1870s to current day. Primary source materials for this book come from the historical archive departments of Levi Strauss & Co., Lee Jeans, Wrangler, Carhartt, and Cone Mills, as well as some of the best contemporary denim brands of today, including Rogue Territory, Dawson Denim, Denham, Kings of Indigo, Endrime, Evisu, Eat Dust, Butcher of Blue, and Tellason.

Book excerpt: This is book 1 of the Black Knights MC trilogy. Books 2 and 3 are available everywhere now! There's nothing like an outlaw to make a good girl go bad. Kristel wanted to ride on the wild side. But then I got her pregnant. Now, the baby in her belly might start a war between cops and bikers. And she'll have to choose where her true loyalties lie. KRISTEL This is spinning out of control. I needed to taste some freedom. I thought hanging around the Black Knights MC would be fun. But I never expected to fall hard for their leader. Andre is nothing like the boys I'm used to. He's ripped and tattooed from head to toe. And his voice alone is enough to send the best kind of shivers racing down my spine. I want his touch. I crave his kiss. But I might get more than I bargained for. Because Andre doesn't do things halfway. He won't stop with just one moment, just one night with me. He wants me over, and over, and over again. And his kind of sin is as rough as it gets. ANDRE I allowed her in so she could be a pretty distraction. Normally, civilian girls in the clubhouse is a bad idea. They don't know how to keep their mouth shut and their legs open. But I make an exception for Kristel. She's got something I like: An innocence I want to destroy. But giving in to my temptation might turn out to be the disaster that blows everything to pieces. Because our sins come with consequences: Like, for example… an unexpected baby. And now, her past is coming back to bite us. The entire city police force is out for biker blood. They want to hurt me for what I did to their chief's precious little girl. Well, f**k it. Let them come. Kristel belongs to me now. And I'll do whatever it takes to protect what's mine.
