Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My First Year in Canada During the first few days we had little time to ourselves, for besides my more public engage ments, our visitors vied with one another in testify ing their hearty goodwill and kindness to us. Our hearts must have been dull indeed, if we could have mistaken these tokens of affection so sincerely offered to us. On the first Sunday after our arrival, Sep tember sth (having previously re-appointed as my chaplains the two clergymen who had filled that office under my predecessor), I was duly installed in the Cathedral, a building erected nine years ago, and of great beauty, worthy of the Metro politan See of Canada. At the close of the service, I preached on the text, * 'whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Here am I, Lord, send me.' I also preached in the evening to a large and attentive congregation. And here ended the more public ceremonies connected with my entrance upon Episcopal life in Montreal - a life which I humbly trust may in some measure tend to the promotion of my Master's kingdom and glory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All About Canada, Vol. 1: For Little Folks The little stories in Book I. Have been written as simply as possible, and have been read, by way of test, in five schools by some two hundred children in the last two months of their grade one year. These children read the stories with ease, but it is possible that some grade one children may have difficulty with the harder words. It is suggested that, during the latter half of the grade one year, when the teacher will, in any case, be giving many little talks to her class upon the subjects dealt with in the book, after each talk is over she should, as review, have the children read the suitable story from the book, either aloud or silently. The pictures have been selected with care, and it is hoped that they will be useful to the teacher in connection with her talks, as well as to the child in his reading. First of all these lessons comes - trust in God. A man who does not love God may love his country; but the true patriot is always the true Christian. Make this your study, dear children, to know and follow Him who hath so loved the world. Trusting and serving Him, we need not fear to leave in your hands the care of our beloved country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Canadian Memories Iss macnaughtan had visited Canada just before the Great War, and was busily engaged upon writing her experiences in the new country, which had im pressed her so much, when the cataclysm of the war burst upon Europe. She at once volunteered for service, though she was not young and was far from strong. With the heroic little band of English nurses at Antwerp, and in the battered corner of Belgium which continued to hold out against the Germans, She laboured devotedly till June, 1915, when she came home to lecture on the war to the munition workers. In October of that year she left for Russia with an ambulance party, her keen s mpathy having been aroused by the news that the Russian wounded were getting no nurses. The little unit got as far as Persia, where Miss Mac naughtan was taken seriously ill. She struggled back, how no one ever really knew, all the long way from Teheran to her own home in Norfolk Street, where she lingered through some summer days, till she passed away on July 24, 1916. Book Canadian Cities of Romance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canadian Cities of Romance Classic Reprint written by Katherine Hale and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Cities of Romance These sketches call attention to a phase of Canadian history largely unregarded, the romantic background of many of our towns and cities. The writer has not described every romantic city of Canada, nor does this claim to be a modern guide book. The portrayals are unique, not only because of the vivid impressions of one who is a poet as well as a prose writer of distinction, but on account of the association established between certain authors and certain places. The volume is therefore a literary sketch book, as well as a book of cities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Canada as It Is Classic Reprint written by John Foster Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada as It Is Snows, he is made aware he has said something which is not appreciated. Should he unfortunately allude to the long winter, the difficulty of keep ing warm, and seek information about fur overcoats, he will be more or less politely told he is one of those ignorant Englishmen who help in libelling Canada by suggesting it is a region swathed most of the year in snow. Winter is a touchy topic with the Canadian. He never talks about it himself. He will tell you about the peaches grown in Ontario he will become rather pink with enthusiasm describing the wheat region Of the West; he will provide you with a bag of pamphlets on where to get the best fishing and best shooting, and he will remark, with a twinkle in his eye, that it must be rather uncomfortable living in the English rains. Like his neighbour in the States, he thinks it good sport to bait the visiting Englishman on the awfulness of the climate at home, where it is foggy when it isn't drizzling. You smile; but that is only proof he is correct. I am no apologist for the English climate. But in my life I have never known such rain, such clamminess, such a cold, Shivering summer as prevailed when I Visited the eastern provinces of the Dominion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oak and Maple: English and Canadian Verses I cannot let this little book go out into the world without a word of apology for offering so slight an object to the public notice. This, then, is what I have to say for myself: Many years ago, when I was yet in my teens, the larger proportion of these verses were written and printed. They were written in the Canadian back woods, and were first published in a collected form in Montreal. But, both before and after the gathering of them into a little volume, various single sets of verses (i will not use the word found their way into Canadian newspapers and magazines, and thence into American ones. Books were in those days rarely produced in Canada, and mine found many and kind readers, and made a little success. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How I Spent My Two Years' Leave: Or, My Impressions of the Mother Country, the Continent of Europe, United States of America, and Canada No one who has not spent several years in the trying plains of Hindustan can understand the morbid feeling one experiences when a regiment or a dear friend leaves you in the lurch behind for home. It takes a long while before the soothing hand of time allays the blues. It was one of those lovely fresh mornings, peculiar to the Punjab, when, strolling off after breakfast to the Lahore Club, I hinted, for the first time, to my friend, that my papers for leave to Europe had gone in, and I expected to hear in a few days when I might be off.
