Book excerpt: “Mrs. Maybrick's Own Story - My Fifteen Lost Years” is a 1905 memoir by Florence Elizabeth Chandler Maybrick (1862–1941), an American woman convicted in the United Kingdom of murdering her husband James Maybrick with arsenic, which she denied. In film director and writer, Bruce Robinson's 2015 work “They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper”, Robinson makes the claim that Florence's husband was in fact the victim of her brother-in-law, Michael, whom Robinson argues was Jack the Ripper based on 15 years of research. Contents include: “Before the Trial”, “The Trial”. “In Solitary Confinement”, “The Period of Probation”, “The Period of Hard Labor”, “At Aylesbury Prison”, “A Petition for Release”, “Religion in Prison Life”, “My Last Years in Prison”, “My Release”, etc. Read & Co. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Maybrick's Own Story: My Fifteen Lost Years The writing of this book has been to me no joyful task, as its making has been at the expense of much-needed rest and peace of mind. In returning to my dear native land after a long imprisonment, I cherished the hope that I might as quietly as possible be permitted to take up the threads of outward existence so cruelly broken, little dreaming that trials hardly less grievous than those left behind awaited me; for no sooner had I touched these hospitable shores, when I was met by the fear-inspiring cry, "You must write a book - you must give the world an account of your sufferings" - as if one could never suffer enough. She was born in Mobile, Alabama and met her husband, a wealthy businessman, on board ship whilst travelling to England. They were married soon after - she aged 19 and he 23 years her senior. Maybrick, a hypochondriac who regularly self-administered arsenic and patent medicines, died at home in May 1889 and upon examination was found to have small traces of arsenic in his system. His wife was known to have bought flypaper containing arsenic a month earlier and she was charged with his murder, sent to trial and convicted. After a public outcry her death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and she was eventually released in January 1904 after serving 14 years in custody. This account of her case was published the following December. With 15 photographic illustrations.

Book excerpt: Florence Maybrick was the first American woman to be sentenced to death in England—for murdering her husband, a crime she almost certainly did not commit. Her 1889 trial was presided over by an openly misogynist judge who was later declared incompetent and died in an asylum. Hours before Maybrick was to be hanged, Queen Victoria reluctantly commuted her sentence to life in prison—in her opinion a woman who would commit adultery, as Maybrick had admitted, would also kill her husband. Her children were taken from her; she never saw them again. Her mother worked for years to clear her name, enlisting the president of the United States and successive ambassadors, including Robert Todd Lincoln. Decades later, a gruesome diary was discovered that made Maybrick’s husband a prime Jack the Ripper suspect.

Book excerpt: A true story of an American woman arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to hang for the murder of her British husband. In its day, it was one of the most sensational cases of the 19th century. Here, Florence Maybrick tells of the horror and devastation of being separated from her children, thrown into solitary confinement, and struggling to maintain sanity. For fifteen years she struggled to hang on and gained a remarkable set of supporters on both sides of the Atlantic, including Lincoln's former secretary (later Secretary of State) John Hay. Queen Victoria herself was apprised of the proceedings, as was U.S. Ambassador to Britain, Robert Todd Lincoln.Mrs. Maybrick relates the saga of her ordeal and her final emancipation. She made an eloquent and impassioned appeal for prison reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, first published in 1987, focuses on Victorian approaches to the moral reformation of prisoners, and aims to emphasise the ways in which the human value and social inclusion of prisoners were pursued. The author begins by discussing the evangelical view of social problems and human value in early-industrial Britain as well as the ‘associationist’ psychological analysis of human attitude developed by theorists from John Locke to Jeremy Bentham. The workings of these two theoretical frameworks in the practice of British prisons are then analyses, arguing that by 1860 both theories were basic to the approach to the incarceration of wrongdoers. After 1860 the picture changed radically to an unambiguous deterrent severity. This was linked to a more ‘scientific’ and evolutionist analysis of human conduct and attitude; theological objections to reformism were also brought into play. In the last forty years of the nineteenth century prisoners came to be seen as constitutionally inferior beings for whom no hope of reform could be generally entertained. This title will be of interest to students of history and of criminology.
