Book excerpt: A wonderful book for the Feldenkrais Method - it works well for people who have never heard of Feldenkrais, in that it shows the important aspects that people need to know. The book really helps people grasp how and why the Feldenkrais Method is different from other modalities, how intelligent, effective and unique it is. And the book works equally well for people who know and have experienced the Feldenkrais Method before. People really like the book. Everyone says the book is fun, interesting and easy to read and use. People love the pictures and the dialog bubbles. And the book makes it so easy for people to show to their friends and relatives, to explain what it is that they are doing, rather than having to describe, explain or illustrate what the Feldenkrais Method is. They can just hand them the book and say 'Here. This is what i am doing!' The book appeals to all types of people, all age groups and backgrounds. Even though the pictures show young, healthy looking people doing lessons, older students and people with physical limitations like it as much as the younger ones. The book is contemporary, user-friendly, has a high quality feel and look; and although it is small, it is packed with info. It can make a huge difference in promoting and supporting Feldenkrais in anyone's trade area (or anywhere for that matter), it's a resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relieve pain, recover from stress, and enhance pleasure with the Feldenkrais Method The Feldenkrais Method is a revolutionary approach to health and fitness. Using what Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais called "Awareness Through Movement," people of any age or condition can learn to move more comfortably and effectively. In pleasant yet powerful ways, his method reawakens the natural process by which we as babies learned to crawl, walk, and talk. In the U.S. and Canada more than one thousand guild-certified practitioners teach the Feldenkrais Method. Awareness Heals is the first book to present the full benefits of the Feldenkrais Method in clear language. It details six basic lessons which help you to become more aware of how you breathe, sit, walk, and otherwise move. By sensing these natural actions, you grow more skillful and supple in all your movements. Through the Feldenkrais Method, you can learn to relieve pain, enhance flexibility, and recover from physical or emotional stress. The gentle movements in Awareness Heals are designed for practice at home and work, and even in your car. They fit into any program of fitness, exercise, or therapy. Most important, Feldenkrais lessons demonstrate that such problems as stiffness and stress do not require outside intervention--the remedy lies within each of us.

Download or read book In an Unspoken Voice written by Peter A. Levine, Ph.D. and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unraveling trauma in the body, brain and mind—a revolution in treatment. Now in 17 languages. In this culmination of his life’s work, Peter A. Levine draws on his broad experience as a clinician, a student of comparative brain research, a stress scientist and a keen observer of the naturalistic animal world to explain the nature and transformation of trauma in the body, brain and psyche. In an Unspoken Voice is based on the idea that trauma is neither a disease nor a disorder, but rather an injury caused by fright, helplessness and loss that can be healed by engaging our innate capacity to self-regulate high states of arousal and intense emotions. Enriched with a coherent theoretical framework and compelling case examples, the book elegantly blends the latest findings in biology, neuroscience and body-oriented psychotherapy to show that when we bring together animal instinct and reason, we can become more whole human beings.

Download or read book Moving from the Inside Out written by Lesley McLennan and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven powerful principles for better, more easeful movement--a Feldenkrais approach. More often than not, we move through life focused on results or where we're going, rarely paying attention to how we move until we experience pain or need to learn a new skill or perform at an elite level. But movement isn't just about getting things done or getting from here to there: at its essence, it's an integration of thinking, sensing, and feeling with action such that to change one part changes the whole. This book is written for those times when we don't need quick fixes, bandaids, or shortcuts to solve an immediate problem, but can instead dedicate time and attention to explore, laying the foundation to become experts in our own body and movement patterns for long-lasting positive growth. Moving from the Inside Out shows us how to resolve complex movement issues, balance stability and instability, increase power and precision, and explore our own movement using innate learning strategies. Written for practitioners, movement therapists, and somatic teachers and students, the curious athlete or casual learner will also find much to gain in learning the practical and accessible fundamentals of movement. Authors Lesley McLennan and Julie Peck introduce seven core principles that address: The dynamic balance between instability and stability How to move with ease and grace The secrets of flexibility and support embedded in every musculo-skeletal system How anxiety and curiosity shape our individual developmental sequence How qualities of movement are clues for your investigation The special role of intra-abdominal pressure in our physical and emotional worlds How moving and learning are entwined
Download or read book Somatics written by Thomas Hanna and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2004-08-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When our bodies start to feel stiff, sore, or tired, we often say that we're "getting old." But is that really the problem? In this groundbreaking work, Thomas Hanna shows that much of the physical decline associated with aging is not inevitable but avoidable. Building on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, Hanna's practical program for the mind and body proves once and for all that problems you've always thought of as the symptoms of age--stiffness, bad back, chronic pain, fatigue, and, at times, even high blood pressure--need never occur if you maintain conscious control of your nerves and muscles. He shows how the body can turn a habitual action into an involuntary, destructive pattern called sensory-motor amnesia, and demonstrates a simple but effective method for conquering these habits with sensory-motor awareness. With only a five-minute routine once a day, you can maintain the pleasures of a limber, healthy body indefinitely and escape the confines of age or injury. Practical and easy to use, Somatics is the essential guide to reversing the physical effects of aging--or staving them off before they even begin.

Download or read book Interoception Contemplative Practice and Health written by Norman Farb and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an emergent movement of scientists and scholars working on somatic awareness, interoception and embodiment. This work cuts across studies of neurophysiology, somatic anthropology, contemplative practice, and mind-body medicine. Key questions include: How is body awareness cultivated? What role does interoception play for emotion and cognition in healthy adults and children as well as in different psychopathologies? What are the neurophysiological effects of this cultivation in practices such as Yoga, mindfulness meditation, Tai Chi and other embodied contemplative practices? What categories from other traditions might be useful as we explore embodiment? Does the cultivation of body awareness within contemplative practice offer a tool for coping with suffering from conditions, such as pain, addiction, and dysregulated emotion? This emergent field of research into somatic awareness and associated interoceptive processes, however, faces many obstacles. The principle obstacle lies in our 400-year Cartesian tradition that views sensory perception as epiphenomenal to cognition. The segregation of perception and cognition has enabled a broad program of cognitive science research, but may have also prevented researchers from developing paradigms for understanding how interoceptive awareness of sensations from inside the body influences cognition. The cognitive representation of interoceptive signals may play an active role in facilitating therapeutic transformation, e.g. by altering context in which cognitive appraisals of well-being occur. This topic has ramifications into disparate research fields: What is the role of interoceptive awareness in conscious presence? How do we distinguish between adaptive and maladaptive somatic awareness? How do we best measure somatic awareness? What are the consequences of dysregulated somatic/interoceptive awareness on cognition, emotion, and behavior? The complexity of these questions calls for the creative integration of perspectives and findings from related but often disparate research areas including clinical research, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, anthropology, religious/contemplative studies and philosophy.
