Unfortunately, it is off to a slow start, so, instead of helping her husband at the clinic, Cody's mom has taken a job at the bank. Cody, a freshman in high school, has to help out by working for his dad at the clinic after school and on Saturday mornings. Whenever he has the time, he hangs out with his Arabian gelding, Lance. But he thinks Lance is probably bored on school days, so he arranges to let Barb, who runs a horse therapy stable, use him as a therapy horse during the daytime. Cody doesn't make friends easily in his new school, but he thinks he will, if he can talk his parents into letting him try out for the JV basketball team. He was the star point-guard at his old school and loved it. But he is needed at the clinic during practice hours. Chloe, who also has a horse and has to pay for his keep by herself, arranges to take Cody's place at the clinic in exchange for any vet work her horse requires. This frees Cody to try out for the team. What happens on the court and at the clinic as well as with Lance leads to some exciting skirmishes.

Book A Life on the Middle West s Never Ending Frontier

Download or read book A Life on the Middle West s Never Ending Frontier written by Willard L. Boyd and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University of Iowa legend Willard L. “Sandy” Boyd is a proud middle westerner. His decades of service to the university began in 1954, when he arrived as a law professor. He later became president of the University of Iowa from 1969 to 1981, and led the school through times that were fraught not just for the university but for the country. During the intense polarization of the late sixties and early seventies, Sandy’s compassion and steady leadership ensured that dissent on campus would be honored and would not stop the university’s educational mission. He quickly became admired, not simply for his professional achievements but also for his personal integrity. His memoir, interspersed with personal wisdom gleaned over more than six decades of service and leadership, encapsulates Sandy’s shrewd yet optimistic view of the public university as an institution. At every stage in his life—in the U.S. Navy during World War II, while practicing law or teaching, and in leadership positions at Chicago’s Field Museum and the University of Iowa— Sandy relied on his principles of open disclosure, inclusiveness, and respect for differences to guide him on issues that matter. This chronicle of Sandy’s experiences throughout his life shows us the evolution both of the University of Iowa and of the nation writ large. More importantly, this book gives us a lens through which to examine our present situation, whether debating free speech on campus, the role of the arts and humanities in civil society, or the importance of funding for educational and cultural institutions.

"Doc" Tebbe rolled into the town of Fort Recovery, Ohio, in June 1962 ready to get work as a veterinarian. More than fifty years later, he's still practicing his craft. It's a career he knew he'd embark on as a young boy, when his prized cow, Shirley, suffered complications while giving birth. He watched on in horror from a hay chute as the veterinarian, Dr. Steinke, began cutting off the calf's legs, head, and ribs, yelling to no one in particular, "I hate to do this, but it's our only chance to save the cow." Both the cow and the calf died, and it broke Tebbe's heart. That day, he vowed to become a better veterinarian than Dr. Steinke to make up for what he did to his Shirley. Tebbe has since had colossal failures that have made him realize how bad Dr. Steinke must have felt that day he failed. For instance, on his very first day of work, he accidentally killed a cat. Join a small-town veterinarian on some very big adventures in 50 Years a Veterinarian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vet's Daughter combines shocking realism with a visionary edge. The vet lives with his bedridden wife and shy daughter Alice in a sinister London suburb. He works constantly, captive to a strange private fury, and treats his family with brutality and contempt. After his wife's death, the vet takes up with a crass, needling woman who tries to refashion Alice in her own image. And yet as Alice retreats ever deeper into a dream world, she discovers an extraordinary secret power of her own. Harrowing and haunting, like an unexpected cross between Flannery O'Connor and Stephen King, The Vet's Daughter is a story of outraged innocence that culminates in a scene of appalling triumph.
