Book My Father Daniel Boone

Download or read book My Father Daniel Boone written by Neal O. Hammon and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-04-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most famous figures of the American frontier, Daniel Boone clashed with the Shawnee and sought to exploit the riches of a newly settled region. Despite Boone's fame, his life remains wrapped in mystery. The Boone legend, which began with the publication of John Filson's The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boone and continued through modern times with Fess Parker's Daniel Boone television series, has become a hopeless mix of fact and fiction. Born in 1819, archivist Lyman Draper was a tireless collector of oral history and is responsible for much of what we do know about Boone. Particularly interested in frontier history, Draper conducted interviews with the famous and the obscure and collected thousands of manuscripts (he walked hundreds of miles through the South to save historical materials during the Civil War). In an 1851 visit with Boone's youngest son, Nathan, and Nathan's wife, Olive, Draper produced over three hundred pages of notes that became the most important source of information about Daniel. The interviews provide a wealth of accurate, first-hand information about Boone's years in Kentucky, his capture by Indians, his defense of Fort Boonesboro, his lengthy hunting expeditions, and his final years in Missouri. My Father, Daniel Boone is an engaging account of one of America's great pioneers, in which Nathan makes a point of separating fact from fiction. From explaining the methods his father used to track game to detailing how land speculation and legal problems from title claims caused Boone to leave Kentucky and take up residence farther west, Nathan Boone's portrait of his father brings a crucial period in frontier history to life.

I can’t say I am anything like him. When I was a child, life was different. Being one of the ten children made life more complex. I was the seventh child and the third daughter. So, I barely knew my father. He was always there in the house commanding respect. No one was given any especial attention. But everyone received care and love. In documenting his life, I had to rely on my memory of the things I absorbed form a distance. A word, a phrase, a comment, said during events.” Rosaly Puthucheary, teacher, writer, poet, mother, sister, daughter. “There is something cathartic about reading one’s own family in relation to historical events that define the psyche of a Nation, it simply gives greater context to our own existence.” Sanjay C Kuttan, writer, poet, son. “A riveting story of a young man with big dreams who arrives in Singapore from Kerala in the early 1900s.” Dr Anitha Devi Pillai, Senior Lecturer, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.

Book Grey Area

    Book Details:
  • Author : Will Self
  • Publisher : Grove/Atlantic, Inc.
  • Release : 2012-10-16
  • ISBN : 0802193358
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Grey Area written by Will Self and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Self, whom the Los Angeles Times calls “the hottest young novelist in England,” demonstrates his razor-sharp wit in these nine new stories. Self’s method depends upon taking an ordinary aspect of the world and then pushing it to its limit in furious absurdity. The short stories in Grey Area reflect the technical brilliance and satiric voice that have made him one of the most highly praised comic writers in a decade. These are stories that delve into the modern psyche with unsettling and darkly satiric results. “Inclusion®” tells the story of a doctor who is illegally testing a new antidepressant made from bee excrement. “A Short History of the English Novel” brings us face to face with a pompous publisher who is greeted at every turn by countless rejected authors. In “The End of the Relationship” a woman who has been left by her boyfriend provokes—“like some emotional Typhoid Mary”—that same reaction among all the couples she goes to for comfort. The narrator of “Between the Conceits” declares without hesitation that London is controlled by only eight individuals, and, thankfully, he is one of them. Self’s world in these pieces is both curiously familiar and hauntingly strange. Published to critical acclaim in England, Grey Area is a dazzling collection by one of the most talented and original writers of his generation.

Book Vision Courage and Service

Download or read book Vision Courage and Service written by Brigadier Satish K. Issar and published by Vision Books. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in a traditional Indian middle-class family in 1921, Tapishwar Narain ("Tappy") Raina rose to the pinnacle of the Indian Army in 1975. A decorated and battle-hardened soldier, Tappy Raina proved also to be a visionary Army Chief. He pushed through ground-breaking initiatives both for making the Indian Army future-ready and for the welfare of its officers and men. Equally, his quiet but firm stand against the Indian Army being drawn into the maelstrom of Indian politics during the period of Emergency was a truly signal service to India’s democracy. Tappy Raina was pitched into the 2nd World War at the very outset of his army career and saw action in the Middle East, Burma and the Far East. During this period he was wounded and lost his right eye but never let this early setback affect him professionally. His finest hour as a soldier came during India’s war with China in 1962. Amidst the ruins elsewhere along the borders, Brigadier Raina won laurels as a battlefield commander in Ladakh, where Indian Army blunted the Chinese PLA in the battle of Chushul. For this exemplary military leadership, Tappy Raina was conferred the country’s second highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC). Later, for his contribution in the war against Pakistan in 1971, then Lt General Raina was conferred the award of Padma Bhushan. Not even sixty yet, General Raina passed away in 1980 with his boots on while serving in India’s High Commissioner in Canada. Interspersed in the book are notes by Tappy Raina’s wife, Ninette, which etch out some personal facets of his life and reveal his innate decency, modesty and compassion. General T. N. Raina’s was an inspiring life of outstanding service to the nation, embodying vision, professional excellence and courage.
